Paleontologists at the Montbrook fossil dig typically find the isolated bones and teeth of prehistoric mammals buried at regular intervals; the location of these fossils is evidence favoring the hypothesis of a prehistoric river fed by a nearby glacier that scattered the mammals’ remains after the decay of their soft tissue.

(A) favoring the hypothesis of a prehistoric river fed by a nearby glacier that
Option A is grammatically correct and effectively conveys the intended meaning. It states that the location of the fossils is evidence supporting the hypothesis of a prehistoric river that was fed by a nearby glacier.

(B) that favors the hypothesis of a prehistoric river that was fed by a nearby glacier and that
Option B is redundant and unnecessarily wordy. It repeats "that" and "and that" without adding any meaningful information to the sentence. It also alters the meaning slightly by implying that the fossils themselves favor the hypothesis, rather than their location being evidence that supports the hypothesis.

(C) favoring the hypothesis that a prehistoric river fed by a nearby glacier
Option C is grammatically incorrect. "favoring the hypothesis that a prehistoric river fed by a nearby glacier" is incomplete and lacks a main verb. It doesn't convey a complete thought.

(D) in favor of the hypothesis that a prehistoric river was fed by a nearby glacier and that
Option D is grammatically correct, but it is unnecessarily wordy. It adds "in favor of" without adding any significant meaning to the sentence.

(E) of favor for the hypothesis of a nearby glacier that fed a prehistoric river and
Option E is grammatically incorrect. The phrase "of favor for the hypothesis of a nearby glacier that fed a prehistoric river and" is structurally flawed and doesn't form a coherent sentence.

In summary, option (A) is the best answer as it is grammatically correct, concise, and effectively communicates the intended meaning without introducing any unnecessary complexity.

D is the right answer.

In favor is most suitable in this case. 'That' is also used correctly.

Glacier scattered the mammal's remains is the connecting idea and can't be separated, So Eliminate B, D,E
The placement of that in option C is wrong here which makes the whole sentence unbalanced, Also meaning change. Eliminate C

A is the answer

(A) favoring the hypothesis of a prehistoric river fed by a nearby glacier that
This option is awkward and unclear. It is not immediately apparent what "that" refers to in the underlined part.

(B) that favors the hypothesis of a prehistoric river that was fed by a nearby glacier and that
This option is excessively wordy and redundant. It unnecessarily repeats "that" and "and that."

(C) favoring the hypothesis that a prehistoric river fed by a nearby glacier
This option is concise and clearer than the original sentence. It maintains the meaning without unnecessary wordiness.

(D) in favor of the hypothesis that a prehistoric river was fed by a nearby glacier and that
This option is wordy and redundant. It adds "in favor of" and "and that," making the sentence less effective.

(E) of favor for the hypothesis of a nearby glacier that fed a prehistoric river and
This option is grammatically incorrect. The phrase "of favor for the hypothesis of a nearby glacier" is awkward and does not fit well in the sentence.

The most effective sentence is option (C)

When you introduce hypothesis, it has to be introduced as hypothesis that. All other idioms are wrong
Hence C)

favoring modifies evidence.

_________________________________________________________
It is crucial to understand the meaning of the sentence in order to pick up the right choice. If we pay attention, second sentence starts with a semicolon. It means that second sentence is an independent clause. So, lets move on to answer choices.
A - without concentrating on grammatical points, lets try to understand the meaning. It implies that ''glacier'' scattered mammals' remaines. It is not the intended meaning. A is out.
B - the use of ''and'' implies that there are 2 different actions such as ''river that was fed by .. and that scattered'' . It is also intended meaing of the sentence. This answer choice is not correct.
C - it implies that '' evidence favouring the hypothesis that a prehistoric river ... scattered ...''. Meaning:
- river scattered the remains - logical
- hypothesis that ... (independent clause)
Hold on C.
D - If we read the sentence without the first part (a prehistoric river was fed by a nearby glacier), it gives us the following meaning. ''hypothesis that scattered remains'' - It is illogical. D is out.
E - Firstly, '' of favor for'' doesnt sound natural , but Gmat doesnt care whether it sounds natural or not. Lets pay attention to the meaning of the sentence. There is ''and'', which means there should be parallelism. '' scattered'' can be parallel with ''fed'', but meaning is distorted. ''glacier that fed.. and scattered ''. Intended meaning is that Not the glacier , but river scattered remaines. E is out.

C is our winner.

A. Correct. Clear structure and grammatically correct.
B. Incorrect. "and that" wrongly links back to the subject "a prehistoric river" while "scattered the mammals’ remains" should modify "a nearby glacier". A river cannot scatter remains.
C. Incorrect. Same issue as B, "scattered" modifies "a prehistoric river"
D. Incorrect. Same issue as B
E. "of favor for" is an incorrect idiom

(A) favoring the hypothesis of a prehistoric river fed by a nearby glacier that
here meaning is nearby glacier scattered the mammals' remains, however actual meaning requires river to scatter the remains

(B) that favors the hypothesis of a prehistoric river that was fed by a nearby glacier and that
Here and is a parallelism and is not meaningful since evidence that favors and evidence that scattered

(C) favoring the hypothesis that a prehistoric river fed by a nearby glacier
evidence favoring the hypothesis that a prehistoric river scatter the mammals' remains (fed by a nearby river is a modifier modifying river)
This looks correct

(D) in favor of the hypothesis that a prehistoric river was fed by a nearby glacier and that
here it is meaning error hypothesis that a river was fed and hypothesis that scattered.

(E) of favor for the hypothesis of a nearby glacier that fed a prehistoric river and
evidence of favor for the hypothesis and scattered. Parallelism error

So C is the answer

(A) favoring the hypothesis of a prehistoric river fed by a nearby glacier that

The evidence favors hypothesis that something happened. Hence we need a connector here. What we have is a long chain of modifiers.

(B) that favors the hypothesis of a prehistoric river that was fed by a nearby glacier and that

Distorts the meaning. The meaning rendered by this version is that the evidence does two things

1) favors the hypothesis of a prehistoric river 2) scattered the mammals’ remains

This is illogical

(C) favoring the hypothesis that a prehistoric river fed by a nearby glacier

Correct !

(D) in favor of the hypothesis that a prehistoric river was fed by a nearby glacier and that

Distorts the meaning. The meaning rendered by this version is that the is hypothesis about two things

1) prehistoric river was fed by a nearby glacier 2) scattered the mammals’ remains

This is illogical

(E) of favor for the hypothesis of a nearby glacier that fed a prehistoric river and

Incorrect parallelism.
