Hi,
I am Vyom Mathur, Area Growth Head (Business Development Head) at OYO (Unicorn Startup). I am applying for MBA programs across top 20 B-Schools in the US. Below is a bit about me and my profile. Do let me know if I can add anything here for a better/more well-rounded review of my profile. Thanks!

1. Demographics: Indian Male, Engineer. 28 years old.
2. Education: Vellore Institute Of Technology (2011-2015). GPA: 8.1/10. Major: Electronics & Communication Engineering.
3. GMAT: 700. Q48, V37, IR 8.
4. Work experience:
- 6 years of total work experience in India’s top startup industries and proven leadership abilities. Expert in increasing productivity and customer satisfaction while driving revenue and sales. Involved in streamlining procedures while optimising employee talent.
- Currently working in OYO for past 3 years as Area Growth Head, managing a team size of 8 business development managers. Part of the coveted The CEO Club, India & South Asia, awarded to the top 10% from 500 top performers who presented citations for their excellent performance during covid times. Recognised twice in OYO Townhall for significant contribution to business.
- Post undergrad, joined Practo (Asia’s top healthcare startup) in an individual contributor sales manager role. Promoted twice in a span of total 3 years of working
at the company. Headed 4 member team in my last role at the firm.
among them.
6. Post MBA Goals:
Short term- I want to transition to a Product Marketing Manager or Product Manager role in technology sector primarily.
Long term - CMO In technology sector.
7. Target Schools: Top 15 B-schools in USA.
8. Other Information:
Planning to retake gmat. Target score 730-740.

HI vyiom,
-OYO great company, your first statement needs to be quantified - %, #’s to show how you’ve done this or the outcome. You’ll want to speak about OYO and COVID - how did impact the business... how has it changed for the better?
- Goals - Consider which companies would be a good fit (beyond Apple, Google, Amazon), look at the Career Outcomes for the school to see employers commonly there
-T15 is a good area to target, GMAT should be 720+

CrushTHYGMAT
- 26 yr-old Indian Female
- Educational Background: Undergrad in English Literature with coursework in Political Science and History; Post graduate certificate in advertising management and public relations. During undergrad, I was in the organising committee of the Department Fest.
- GMAT: 690 (Q48, V35)

Work Experience:
Total: 6.2 years
Role 1: Editor at a newspaper that’s the largest in India circulation wise
Role 2: Consultant at a US-based marketing communications Firm. Worked in this role or three years, and got promoted each year (Associate - Consultant - Associate Project Manager). Worked for clients in the tyre, legal, and telecom industry.
Role 3: Assistant Manager at India’s largest corporate law firm. Set up the Communications division at the Firm.

Post-MBA goal:
Consulting

ECs:
- Self-taught bartender, have bartended at more than 30 events
- Beginners and Improvers level certification at India’s only dance school that specializes in Belly Dancing
- Self-taught fitness coach. I’ve been named one of the fittest people in the communications industry. Mentored over 15 women who were conscious about lifting weights at a gym in which I also trained.

Awards:
- Innovator of the Year at the Law Firm
- Three awards at the US-based company for campaigns
- Employee of the month (a few times) at the US-based company

Questions:
- Can you suggest some schools where I will be most competitive? I want to apply to schools that could possibly offer me scholarships.
- I am working on bumping up my GMAT score to a 740. Will that suffice, as I have low GPA because I was working throughout my undergrad. Have taken up MBA Math to supplement the Quant score.

Hi CrushTHYGMAT,
-If you can bump over 700-720, Cornell, Tepper, HEC Paris, Rotman... UNC, Kelley, Owen
-Typically we say that you cannot go back and change your GPA, only thing you can do is resolve any questions the committee may have - the GMAT and MBA Math can do this. Kudos on starting MBA Math already!
You have strong experience that committee’s will enjoy learning about!

Indian: Male (age 20)
10th: 8.6/10 CGPA
12th: 90.2% all subjects
Under grad from one of the top 3 business schools in India
3rd year will start soon: current CGPA: 3.63/4

Target B schools:
ISB YLP (already got through 1st round)
Kellogg deferred MBA
MIT Sloan deferred MBA
Chicago Booth deferred MBA
Yale deferred MBA
LBS MiM
HEC MiM
INSEAD MiM

GMAT score: 730 (expected)

What should be my target GMAT score?
How can I improve my profile in a few months?
What are my chances for my target b schools?

Hi avichalchopra, Deferred MBA programs are very competitive as they admit very small batches, however, if you do not get in and apply for an MBA later on, this cements your long-tenured interest in that specific program. So your efforts will not go to waste. They are looking for sure bets when selecting candidates, having a job secured and at an MNC or Consulting Firm or in a Leadership Development Program with a steady employer (versus a start up) will be very beneficial.
MiMs: Double check the requirements, sometimes it is for non-business majors, which you may be?
For Deferred MBA you need to target 750+ GMAT, for MiM 720 should put you in solid position
Chances at Deferred MBA are low, not b/c of you, but it is a small batch from the most competitive programs in the world with less than a 20% acceptance rate for a FT program.
Chances with MiM are stronger, as long as you qualify. I would opt for the MiM over a PGP/PGDM.. after these Indian degrees it is hard to get into an MBA.

Hi AmarpreetK,
You have an interesting profile with neat work experience. ISB places higher value on your numbers and statistics, which you will need a higher GMAT to outweigh your CGPA’s. You could also consider Cambridge with your social impact work.

what should be my target for gmat if I want to get into ISB? I am aiming for 700, is that low considering my low cgpa. Also since my grad and undergrad was in pol science where percentile range is already low considering the descriptive nature of the exam . Does that justification count ?

Age: 32, Sex: Indian Male, Current Residence: India
GMAT Score: Based on 4 mocks 670-700 (scheduled 1st official attempt last week of July), IELTS (Academic): 8.0
Academic: B.E Mechanical Engineering (Production Engineering Specialization), Osmania University. GPA: 3.3
GMAE (General Management Program for Aerospace and Aviation Executives) 1 year Certificate Program from Indian Institute of Management Bangalore & TBS France, 2017-2018
Work experience: 9-10 years
Goals:
Short Terms Goal: Move to Strategic roles in the Renewable Energy Sector (not restricted to Aerospace). I have studied Solar Energy Engineering & Photovoltaics and gained certificates by clearing exams. My plan is to integrate knowledge from academics and experience to enable the switch-over. Long Terms Goals: Head a company involved in Renewable Energy Sector or start/run an organization in the same sector
Questions:
1) I’ve heard a lot that USA is not a great choice for an MBA with the amount of experience I have. How true is that in my case? Would MEM be an alternative?
2) In continuation to the above question, what are the schools that I should be aiming at ? (I am specifically looking at B Schools outside India)
3) What should be my Target GMAT score for the suggested B-school? (relative to the current mock scores I have)
4) Suggestions on what I can do to improve my profile given the age and possible generic pool disadvantage?

Hi the27s,
Great work experience, involvement at work and outside.
-US 2 year MBA’s are not geared for that much experience, consider 1 yr FT MBA’s at Cornell, Kellogg, Duke, or Emory OR UK/EU 1 yr programs.
-MEM can be an alternative, but may not align directly with career goals (we can chat offline more if you wish - [email protected] )
- GMAT near 720-730 should be a good range with well written applications
-highlight what is special about you, your industry experience, your goals... schools want to hear about what you have accomplished and how you will participate and interact with the cohort

How to build my profile?
Targeting 2023-24 admission

Great questions and motivation DeepanshiR,
-task to take leadership or even customer facing projects
-track your successes, keep a log that quantifies your impact - #, %, time, people
-try to gain international exposure! through clients or even personal travel
-start interacting with the adcoms, attend events, speak to current students and alumni (track this as well!)
-and start studying for the GMAT/GRE - take it sooner than later, closer to graduation is easier
I have a tracker to share with you - email me [email protected]

as mentioned in the above conversation, 10+ years is hard for US Schools, consider 1 yr FT MBA’s at Cornell, Kellogg, Duke, or Emory OR UK/EU 1 yr programs and maybe LBS. UK/EU schools tend to actually do profile evals, don’t be afraid to request one!

I think you will need higher for ISB, their average is around 710, so at least average will be needed.
Not sure about the testing issue, but I would say that justification isn’t needed.
