BiswajitMahapatra
Hello,
I got a GMAT score of 730 (Q-51 V-38 IR-7 AWA-4.5) . I am a 29 yr male engineering graduate(Year 2016 from IIT(BHU),Varanasi). I have 5 years & 5 months experience as an executive in a central PSU company (Coal India). My present job is of Production and maintenance nature.
I am planning to pursue a full time MBA in some of the good B-Schools in USA or in Europe (such as LBS, INSEAD etc.) or in Singapore (NUS). But I don't have much idea regarding business schools abroad and the courses and opportunities offered by them. Below are some of my queries.
1. Will MBA be sufficient to change my current career path or any additional certification or work experience will be needed? I only have 5.5 years work experience in the production sector and no other specific skill sets.
2. Considering that I have work experience in Production and maintenance field in a central PSU, What are the different possible career profiles that an MBA from abroad can help me achieve?
3. My preference is to join 12-15 months full time MBA from abroad by Sep 2022 or March 2023. What is the time required for the complete application process? Can I expect a scholarship from an elite B-School?
Any help in this matter will be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Hi
BiswajitMahapatra , hope you are well. I have a production background of 5 years (pre MBA but non-PSU), and I am an INSEAD alum so hope I can add value to your post.
1. Will MBA be sufficient to change my current career path or any additional certification or work experience will be needed? I only have 5.5 years of work experience in the production sector and no other specific skill sets.
Yes, you would be able to change your career path post-MBA and in fact, you can do it without an MBA too, especially since you have an IIT pedigree and good credentials. The major concern that I have with your profile is whether you would be able to demonstrate progression in your career or perhaps a growth mindset given that you spent >5 years in one job in a sector where opportunities are limited. What needs to be explored further is how you grew in terms of responsibilities, experiences and stature in the last 6 years at this PSU. You should understand that you have less than the average profile of a student at your target B Schools, and knowing this fact, you should work towards filling the gaps to the best of your capability.
2. Considering that I have work experience in the Production and maintenance field in a central PSU, What are the different possible career profiles that an MBA from abroad can help me achieve?
Consulting, Tech, Startups, General Management in Industrial companies - everything is possible. Where do you want to go and why?- this is an important question that every school would ask and you must have a logical answer.
3. My preference is to join 12-15 months full-time MBA from abroad by Sep 2022 or March 2023. What is the time required for the complete application process? Can I expect a scholarship from an elite B-School?
At least 2 months if you have not yet deliberated on how you are going to build a compelling narrative for your candidacy.
Not possible to comment on the odds for a scholarship without knowing the other differentiated aspects of your profile, strengths, and weaknesses.
Feel free to connect over a call some time this week, so that I may guide you better.
Best wishes
