Correct option is B. Though I would prefer "people of various cultures" in place of "various cultures of people".

Hi doe007!

I fully agree with your logic however I find it awkward to use modifier "live there". Shouldn't it be "present there"? How can "cultures" possibly "live there"?

See the last line of my earlier post.
Cultures can be lying or present there and people can live there.
It makes sense to have "people of various cultures live there".

Ok, Thanks!

But still assuming that Ultimate Grammar has a mistake and the proper version is "people of various cultures live there" shouldn't it be "living there"?
I think that gerund "living" should be used to modify "people", shouldn't it?

Frankly this is a rather strange question. For one thing, I am not sure about the causal relationship that because intends to establish. There are many large countries which do not have a diverse population; so, why should US have this, just because it is a large country. I understand this is not critical reasoning; nevertheless this is difficult to digest.

As for B, to me right now, there are two separate independent facts mentioned about US:

1. It has quite a diverse population and
2. Various cultures of people live there

However, logically the presence of people of various cultures is the reason for diversity.

Even with the current articulation, live is modifying people (in the sense that people live there). Again, I don’t see particular relevant of live there. Option B could just have been:

..it has quite a diverse population and people of various cultures.
