I've been coming to this thread a lot and I just wanted to post an update on my process in case any of you guys need another data point.
Submitted: 8/19
Invited to interview: 9/09
Interviewed: 9/16
Interviewer feedback submission: 9/20
Final Decision: ???
Here are my stats in case you guys are interested:
Male, 25 years old, Asian, US Applicant
GMAT: 720
GPA: 3.7 from a top 20 college
WE: At matriculation, will have four years of corporate finance experience with 2 promotions
Extracurriculars: Helped found non-profit and well-traveled
Goals: Pretty achievable and finance-related
The interview was pretty conversational. Just a lot of the "Why Columbia?" type questions. I know a lot of you are getting pretty anxious. Hang in there and best of luck!

If I had to guess, this was the problem with your application. I think what they really want to hear is why YOU. The essays are "trick questions" in that regard, because ultimately, most people's answers to why CBS and why NYC will be relatively similar and uninteresting. Characterizing and selling yourself and your uniqueness in all three of the essays is critical, despite the relative lack of instruction to do just that (outside of the CBS matters essay).

Perhaps you're right. This was the only app I worked closely with a very well-regarded consultant, so I hope that he/she would have caught that, but perhaps that was it.
