FROM NETWORKING TO ACCEPTANCE

Networking for your MBA application helps you foster relationships, gain insights, and build your future before your first class even begins. In other words, networking for your MBA application means reaching out to a good mix of individuals that will help you rise above other MBA candidates. Your MBA application needs to prove that you are a good fit for your chosen business school’s program and campus culture. Engaging in conversations with these types of people is more than meaningful; it significantly enhances your candidacy:

1. Colleagues
Coworkers can offer you real-world insights on the MBA application process through their post-graduation experience, even if they attended a different graduate business school. Colleagues like your direct boss are also good professionals to ask for your business school letter of recommendation.

2. Administrators, teachers, and professors
Sit in on classes, chat with graduate business school administrators, and ask professors a bit about their curriculum and expectations. The more you know what a typical day is like on campus or within a virtual learning environment for your chosen MBA program, the more you can match your strengths to what the admissions committee is looking for.

3. Mentors
Similar to colleagues, mentors will help you gain the real-world experience you need to learn about in your chosen MBA program. Even better, these professionals can teach you how to network effectively. Remember to cast a large net and consider mentors who aren’t in your chosen field, as they can offer you insights and may pique your interests in areas you hadn’t considered before.

4. Current MBA students and alumni
These folks represent a segment of stakeholders that can help you truly understand a school’s culture and learn to “speak the language.” There is no one person who will guarantee your acceptance, which is why networking for your MBA application with MBA students and alumni is key.

5. Campus leaders
Explore student organizations on campus that interest you, then contact the leaders of these clubs. They are often energetic, welcoming, and well-connected people who can augment anything you’ve gleaned from a website or campus tour.

Here are few questions to ask current students/ Alumni:

School & Curriculum
• Describe your typical day.
• What are some of the best classes you have taken?
• How do you select what courses to take? Is there flexibility in what courses you can take? Are there courses you think are most helpful for students interning or recruiting full-time for your area of study (eg, finance, consulting, marketing, ops)?
• Do you feel the program is a better fit for students looking for a specific career? Do student preferences tend to learn towards a particular area?
• How would you describe the student community?

Internships
• From what you’ve seen, what types of intern programs/companies were students most interested in for their summer internship?
• When does the summer internship search begin and when does it end?
• What support does the school provide for finding an internship and understanding the internship search process?
• How did you prepare for your internship recruiting process?

Recruiting
• From what you’ve seen, what types of full-time roles were students most interested in? Was there a shift in what people were looking for in the summer internship to what they were looking for in full-time roles?
• How did most people find their full-time role (e.g., on-campus recruiting firms, off-campus recruiting, the extended school/alumni network, etc.)?
• Describe the networking opportunities available to help you learn more about your career options (e.g., job treks, student club-led activities, company-sponsored events, conferences, etc.)

Social
• What are the “fun” events that you should not miss out on (e.g., happy hours, formals, Olympics, follies, etc.)?
• What opportunities are there for students to work on-campus or off-campus while in school?
• What is something not mentioned on the school’s website that an applicant should know?

Good luck with the application!!

INTRODUCTION:

Hello! Namaste! Kon'nichiwa! Bonjour!

I am Arun from Bangalore, India's silicon valley. I am moderating the CBS forum.
I will be applying to CBS in R1 for the FT-MBA. My undergraduate major is Mechanical Engineering; worked in different manufacturing industries in different roles. Led some sustainable initiatives in the previous organization, which gave me clarity on my ST/LT goals post-MBA. I wish to dedicate my career to support sustainable growth in the manufacturing industry.

That's my intro/story in a nutshell. Kindly introduce yourself & let's get to know each other. Because GC provides a platform to meet like minded people.

Off topic: If anyone of you wondering what's with my username. Let me give you some background on it. indonihon stands for two countries [Indo:INDIA & Nihon-Japan]. Why?? Well Japan is my 1st overseas country, where I have worked the longest and learnt a lot. On this note, I extend heart-felt condolences to the people of Japan on the tragic death of Shinzo Abe san. May his soul rest in peace.

Hello folks!

I just finished applying the upcoming J-term application (incl. recommendation letter).
Not sure, but can see thru GMAT Club Tracker, I am the one who applied earlier than others even among J-term applicants.

As far as I know, it normally takes 4-6 weeks for interview invitation from admission officer,
but could it be much shorter than that, considering earlier application, J-term, etc?

Thanks in advance.

The Columbia MBA: What You Need To Know

The old saying at Columbia Business School had been as Wall Street goes, so does Columbia. Columbia Business School was founded in 1916, thanks in part to a generous gift from banking executive Emerson McMillin. Eleven faculty members taught the inaugural class of 61 students, which included eight women. Columbia’s mission is twofold: standing committed to educating and developing leaders of enterprises who create value for their stakeholders and society at large.

Ultimately, it’s not only their location in New York City that enables them to train their students by way of their mission, but by their long-established place at the heart of the business world.

The MBA is a full-time program designed to be completed over four terms or 2 academic years. Students may enroll in either August or January, and regardless of which start date is chosen the MBA spans four terms and merges in the fall of the second year to complete electives as a single class.

CBS’s core curriculum builds the foundation necessary for success while electives offer insight into specialized areas of expertise. The curriculum consists of only 18 credits of required core coursework, and a minimum of 42 credits of elective courses. Versatile programs like Master Classes, the Individual, Business, and Society Curriculum, and Columbia CaseWorks all approach business education in new ways. Class sizes are rather large, 847 students in 2021 intake, yet the schools’ cluster system encourages students to learn not only with but from their peers.

CBS courses are taught both by 150 full-time faculty members – thought leaders/researchers and by more than 100 adjuncts; practitioners from an array of industries who, because of CBS’s symbiotic relationship with New York, can take the subway uptown to teach classes on their lunch breaks.

Beyond the classroom, CBS offers more than 75 student organizations, its renown alumni network, cutting-edge research centers, and countless events all which work in tandem preparing students for success amid uncertainty.

The paths are identical in terms of competitiveness of admissions, academic rigor, and student resources; but only students who enter in August will be able to complete a summer internship. January (J-Term) students, having completed their first-term courses in the spring, will instead complete their second-term coursework over the summer.

Students have access to numerous conferences and industry events through our partnerships with professional organizations, on campus and around New York City. Their numerous Centers and Programs offer plenty of opportunities for travel, networking, collaboration, and professional development through Columbia University’s extensive global reach. The Alumni Edge program provides additional opportunities for alumni to take courses that keep their skills sharp and maintain their leadership and marketability.

Hey there!

CBS uses rolling admission process. So to answer your question, yes you might receive interview invite prior to the expected time.
