I got the "Closer Look" mail too. I was surprised that they took the effort to personalise it a bit (it had my professional area of focus) - nice touch.

Yes it was nice touch but then i realized that any decent email marketing software can do that :D.

After watching Sara's do's and dont's video, I read my essays one more time just to reassure myself that she was not talking about my essays.

Hey finmaster,

The invites go out towards the end of the month and continue on a rolling basis till decision day.

Hah yes. It had me re-reading my essays and short answers as well.

Although at this point I couldn't have really done anything if I found something amiss :P

Was anyone invited to apply to the Jefferson Fellowship? If so, any takers?

I applied but was expecting to hear back by today but no word. Anyone else?

What do you mean "invited to apply". I thought we don't need to apply seperately for scholarships. That's what it says on the Darden scholarships page.
Do they invite select people that they believe have the potential for such scholarship?

I don't know but it's possible that the Jefferson Fellowship is different - maybe you have to be invited to apply. I was sent an email that invited me to apply through separate channels. From what I understand, they screen on GMAT and GPA (as reported to the GMAC when you take the GMAT).

The following is from Darden's financial aid webpage -

Darden Jefferson Fellowships

(U.S. Citizens and International Students)

Up to two full cost-of-attendance fellowships including full tuition, living expenses, books, computer and a research stipend. The Fellowship was established by various alumni of the Darden School in partnership with the Jefferson Scholars Foundation to secure the most exceptional MBA candidates. Candidates interested in being considered for this Fellowship should possess superior intelligence and academic excellence, but must also demonstrate leadership, citizenship, integrity and honor. For further information, please visit the Darden Jefferson Fellowship or the Jefferson Scholars Foundation.

The following is from the page of Darden Jefferson Fellowship -

The Darden Jefferson Fellowship is the most prestigious and generous fellowship that Darden offers.

Sponsored by the Darden School of Business and the University of Virginia Jefferson Scholars Foundation, the fellowship is awarded solely on the basis of merit and focuses on leadership, citizenship and scholarship. This is consistent with Thomas Jefferson’s belief in a natural aristocracy of scholars and leaders who would share their talents with the wider world for the common good.

The program, launched in 2006, is funded by an endowment raised through private benefactors. The goal is to raise at least $20 million in commitments to allow awards for approximately 15 to 20 Darden Jefferson Fellowships.

Recipients of the Darden Jefferson Fellowship receive full tuition and a living stipend of approximately $20,000 (renewable for two years) and research and travel funds up to $4,800.

The endowed fund was made possible by early gifts from John Macfarlane (MBA '79) and his wife Dudley, the Melville Foundation and Barclay McFadden (MBA '76).

Visit Jefferson Fellowships to learn more about Darden Jefferson Fellowships, which carry the name of their donor, and the application process.

DARDEN JEFFERSON FELLOWS ARE

OUTSTANDING SCHOLARS, OUTSTANDING CITIZENS

AND OUTSTANDING LEADERS.

In short, you gotta be awesome to be even considered for it. Congrats to all who ever invited to apply. :)

I kind of wish they released all invites at once like some other schools. That'd help me plan my R2 apps better.

In any case, don't start getting too nervous until the end of November-ish. Thanksgiving in the US is the last week on November, so I could see some invites going out as late as the first week of December. Darden always says they can invite to interview up until the decision deadline, but I would wager that the vast majority of invitations (close to or actual 100%) are sent at least two weeks before decisions go out.
