Continuing our series celebrating 50 years of women at Darden, this week we feature Veneka Chagwedera (MBA ’13), a woman who turned her kitchen hobby into an entrepreneurial enterprise. Veneka Chagwedera — Buy a Bar, Feed a Child https://blogs.darden.virginia.edu/admissions/files/2015/02/Veneka-Chagwedera.jpg Veneka Chagwedera (MBA ’13) While working for a Southeast Asian nonprofit, Veneka Chagwedera (MBA ’13) started making healthy energy bars to keep her going during her field trips to remote areas. When she returned to the United States to begin business school, she continued experimenting with ingredients, with the aim of crafting a satisfying snack bar without preservatives or added chemicals. Chagwedera soon realized her “kitchen hobby had business potential.” With a grant from the University of Virginia i.Lab Business Incubator (housed at Darden) and support from Darden alumni and faculty, she launched NOURIBAR as a Second Year student in 2012. Having never run a business before, she relied on the guidance of several entrepreneurial faculty experts, including Professors Saras Sarasvathy and Jeanne Liedtka. I'm fortunate in that I've received an invite, but I hear you. This approach is really, really lame. It wasn't rolling admissions, so why not just do it like Wharton or Harvard? 1 day, all the invites / denies. No undue stress. Boom.

I agree with you. It seems like Darden wants the best of everything when it comes to convenience. They won't have rolling submissions but a proper deadline, still they'll take their own sweet time to invite for the interviews. Its a negative for the applicant on both grounds - Meet application deadlines, and nervously wait for the calls while other are getting it already. Needless to say I'll let all of it slide in a jiffy if they do invite me.

For people who interviewed with current students, are you getting responses to your thank you notes? Its funny, in times when I am interviewing for a new job, I think nothing of not getting a response to a thank you note, but when interviewing for MBA I think its a death knell!

The skype interview was a great experience, very nice and relaxing. A very friendly conversation, not a question-answer style. Just be prepared to tell your story, provide your own answer to standard questions (not standard answer to standard questions) and make sure your overall profile is well-rounded and competitive and you will be fine.
