FROM Darden Admissions Blog: Darden Abroad: Geneva, Paris, London, Madrid
Several members of the Darden community are in Europe for a series of exciting events that kick off this weekend. This Saturday, 12 September, Darden will host the Paris Leadership Forum. Dean Scott C. Beardsley will be joined by Darden alumni and the Global MBA for Executives Class of 2016 to spend a weekend exploring multinational companies, celebrating Darden and getting to know one another.

Once the weekend ends, the GEMBA class will complete its fourth international residency. The GEMBA format includes six of two-week residencies throughout the program — in addition to distance learning classes – and during these residencies students travel to places like Brazil, China, India and Europe. In this particular residency, they will spend eight days in Paris and six days in Berlin, Germany, to immerse themselves in the business culture in these cities. You can find out more about the GEMBA residencies here.

After the Leadership Forum, Darden’s faculty and staff look forward to meeting prospective students throughout Europe. This year, we are attending multi-school events in Paris (17 September), London (16 September) and Madrid (15 September), as well as the MBA2U fair in Brussels (19 September). These events are a wonderful opportunity to learn more about US business schools and the admissions process itself, as well as a chance to connect with admissions committee members from Darden and other top business schools. We hope to see you there!

If you cannot attend these multi-school events, there are a few other opportunities to meet Darden faculty members for coffee while they are abroad. You are welcome to join Dean Beardsley, Peter Rodriguez, Senior Associate Dean for Degree Programs, and Marc Johnson, Executive Director for Global Affairs, for coffee and conversation on Monday, 14 September, at 8 pm in Geneva. Sara Neher, Darden’s Admissions Dean, will also be available for coffee chats on Monday, 14 September in Paris, and Thursday, 17 September in London. Please email darden@virginia.edu if you would like to set up a time to meet with Sara, or you would like to attend the Geneva coffee event.

We always look forward to these opportunities to share the Darden experience, and hope to meet many of you next week!

Are You Ready for B-School? 4 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Submitt  [#permalink]

New post 15 Sep 2015, 06:00
FROM Darden Admissions Blog: Are You Ready for B-School? 4 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Submitting Your Application
Maybe business school has been on your radar since college, or maybe it’s something you just started thinking about recently. Either way, you’re probably wondering how to know when you’re ready to take the plunge. Here at Darden, we see a wide range of applicants with diverse backgrounds and years of work experience. These are a few of the questions to ask yourself when deciding if it’s time to get to work on your essays and round up your references:

 • What are my career goals?
Not everyone knows their specific career goals when heading to business school, but as a general rule, they have a pretty good idea. Maybe you want to move up within your current industry or company. Maybe you want to switch to an entirely different industry and need to build the foundation to get the job that you want. Or maybe you’re aspiring entrepreneur who wants to learn more about business so you can start one of your own. Business school can propel you in many directions, but you can also miss out on great opportunities if you don’t know what you are looking for.

[*]Do I have enough work experience?
Most MBA programs want you to have an average of four years of work experience. At Darden, the average age of students in our full-time program is 27. Having work experience is important because it teaches you how to work with a team, practice your leadership skills and learn more about the business world, which in turn will help you lay out your career goals.

[*]Do I have the basic skills necessary to thrive in business school?
While Darden looks for students with a wide range of experiences, there are certain skill sets that will come in handy as you embark on your MBA journey. One of those is quantitative analysis, which will be useful as soon as you start to study for the GMAT or GRE, and will continue to be helpful as you prepare to lead in the business world. If you didn’t take many quantitative classes in college, it might be helpful to brush up on your skills so you are ready for the first day of b-school.

[*]Do I know what I’m looking for in an MBA program?
There are all kinds of MBA programs around the world. Some are full-time; some allow you to work while you get your degree. Some excel at finance, while others specialize in general management or consulting.  The options are endless, so it is up to you to figure out which school is right for you.

If you’re unsure about the answers to some of these questions, it may be helpful to take a course designed to give you an introduction to business school topics, such as Darden’s new Darden Business Institute in the Washington, DC area. It’s designed to introduce you to fundamentals in the functional areas of Accounting, Finance, Operations and Marketing, so it’s the perfect way to obtain new skills, fill gaps in your resume, and begin implementing business best practices in your job as you gain valuable years of work experience. And, since it’s taught by members of Darden’s top-ranked faculty, it’s a great opportunity to test out the real business school experience.

And then, whenever you are ready to continue your MBA journey, we encourage you to learn more about the Darden experience by visiting our website, attending an event, or visiting us in Charlottesville.

Best of luck in your search!

Hello,

I'm planning to move my application from Round 1 to Round 2 for Darden.

Does anybody know whether I have to request the recommendations again or they automatically get attached to the round 2 applications.

Thanks in advance.

FROM Darden Admissions Blog: An Exciting Time for Women at Darden
It’s been quite a year so far for women at Darden. The Class of 2017 contains a record-breaking number of women, Darden is celebrating 50 years of women in the MBA program and, most recently, student-run club Graduate Women in Business sponsored the 2015 Women in Leadership conference in September, which attracted roughly 130 students and 50 sponsors.

And it doesn’t end here. According to Director of Admissions Haley Whitlock Gyory, “Darden is committed to creating an empowering ecosystem for women. Increasing the number and quality of female students is critical to Darden’s viability as a world-class business school.”

Want to learn more about women in business and at Darden? Here are some resources for you to check out:

 • Darden’s recap of the GWIB conference, as well as notes on other women-centric initiatives currently taking place here.
 • Our website, which will introduce you to alumni, student clubs and UVA resources for women.
 • The Forté Foundation. Darden is a sponsor of Forté, a foundation that strives to encourage women in the business world.

Thanks.

I haven't submitted yet, but my proof doesn't show my resume even though it's definitely uploaded.

I'll reconfirm after I submit but I didn't want you to be worried; you're probably good.

Hey sharpsagi,

Your recommendations will be considered in Round 2 if you submit your application in Round 2. You don't need to request new recommendations.

Don't worry. Most probably it's attached. Even if it isn't, the adcom wouldn't start evaluating you until they have your resume. I'm sure they will contact you if there is anything missing.
