I was going to include some things I did in my volunteering in the main essays, but I suppose I should drop those references and shift them there.

Still curious if they’ve always allowed this...I was considering applying last year and I swear the limit was MUCH lower (in line with most other schools). Can anyone confirm if it’s new?

Thank you!
If you are still at UG, you can apply for Deferred MBA. Amazing option to apply to M7 schools and some other top schools.

Hey all, quick question: as an international student, do I still need to submit a TOEFL score to demonstrate English proficiency (even if the medium of instruction in my undergrad is English)?

The language on this page is slightly confusing: https://mba.haas.berkeley.edu/admission ... 1743432401

Would love to hear from Haas admits who are international students on this group :)

Hello everyone, I wanted to ask. Regarding recommendation letters,,,,,, must both come from current employer???

Although they mentioned at least one must come from the current employer, however, I am thinking if the second letter can come from a professional mentor? Any thoughts on this?
Hi. I think this is fine to have one come from non-supervisor/employer. It may help show diemension of your profile if for example you get one from a leader of a non profit org that you volunteered with or perhaps a customer or another department person who you worked with.

However, your boss will have the most impact. The other one will be adding color as the schools want to know what the person who depends on you thinks but a mentor can work on other things and mention things that are outside of what your boss may write adding more color/etc which is not about professional accomplishements but personal growth which can save you space elsewhere as you wont need to mention them or they can reinforce some of the aspects/etc. For example, sometimes people are slated for promotion but did not get it in time for the application, so the Recommender can say that you are going to be promoted, and that’s much stronger than you saying it. So use the recommender opportunity and steer them into the direction/aspects you need most support/color for.

Is it good to get LOR from immediate supervisor (Manager) or higher management.

My specific question is that I work in Big 4. LOR from partner is better than LOR from Manager?

The answer is always squishy with LOR’s. The common trade off is between how much does the partner know you and will they take the time out of their day to do a decent job (getting an LOR from both may be the best of both worlds - if the school needs/allows 2) but I would make sure that your partner actually knows you well enough, they can talk about a few good examples (you will definitely need to give them a 1-pager with all the details such as how long you have been working there, and some key projects/accomplishments), and finally the most critical part - do they they have the time?

Usually, if your supervisor/manager has an MBA, that’s a solid option for a recommender and they will be able to do a good job and likely put more time into it than a partner. I assume you are applying for 3-5 schools, so now the partner would have to fill out 3-5 LOR’s just for you. Imagine they have another 5 or so people they are doing it for. This is not going to be a great LOR. One year I had to write 12 LOR’s and I can tell you my 12th one was done in about 5 mins while the first one was done in a few days. So quality tends to degrade.

By the way, LOR’s do not have to be super long. I have seen a few LOR’s from BCG partners/managers for the HBS application and it was literally 5-7 sentences and that’s it with one brief example. They did not beat around the bush. The person got in but the LOR was very factual and not something fake I have seen written by consultants and given to someone else to submit (talking about how the person was the savior of the company and the business would not function without them... ). Kind of like you spot a fake restaurant review or product review, or fake consultant review for that manner, AdCom can spot the fake LOR.

Final thoughts about something nobody asked me about - Writing an LOR is a chore and a big favor. Make sure your recommender will actually feel obligated to do a proper job. A very high ranking person will be challenging put pressure on to make sure they submit it on time or early and can cause a conflict or can bring you two together, just depends on how you manager it.

Immediate supervisor will be a better choice than higher management. However, in a situation where higher management equally knows you well professionally, I would prefer to choose higher management over my supervisor.
In another situation where I don't want to disclose to my current organization that I am applying to b schools. I should choose my LOR from previous boss. While choosing my ex boss as my recommender, I will use the reserved optional essay, justifying the convincing reason as to why I am choosing my ex boss as my referee in one or two paragraphs. Hope this helps.

Besides these, there are so many other situations with respect to recommendations. Need professional help, do reach out to us support@admissioneminence.com

A handful of candidates hail from Defence of Government . Due to security reasons, they just use one official email id. So there, a recommendation can also be submitted via hotmail or gmail ids.
Here again, the optional essay which is reserved to address this connundrum, must be used to text down a too-the-point and succinct response in one or two paragraphs.

My plan was to have my Ex- Manager and Skip level manager write LOR's, since my new boss just started working with me 2 months back.

However, my Skip level manager was quite a senior guy and he retire a few months back and don't have access to official maid id. Should i use his personal mail id?

In last application he also gave me recommendation
