Ding, ding, ding. Guess I will dress as Hector Salamanca this Halloween.

3.5 undergrad (4.0 in my major, which was business management and economics), 750 GMAT, 5 years as a lawyer doing commercial litigation, and an apparent "LOL... [wads up and throws in garbage bin]" from my two application reviewers. Very disheartening, given that HBS has been a decade plus dream of mine. Oh well, knew HBS was going to be a longshot and I gave it all I had, so I'm at peace with it. Just hope this doesn't portend bad things for the rest of my apps.

Many, many congratulations to all of those who got invites, though. HBS is an amazing place, and you've done something truly special. Best of luck to you guys in your interviews and moving forward in your careers.

According to the admissions blog post, on 10/14, they send invites for 2+2 and full-time MBA. Some people have theorized that probably 75 of those were 2+2. 10/8 and 10/14 combined have 350 invites. Although we don't know how many went out today, there's still a chance that on 10/14, there are some full-time MBA invites.

Believe the thinking is that most of the October 14 invites will go to 2+2 candidates, though there will probably be a very small number of invites to full-time MBA candidates.

Either way, if you're 0 for the first 850-ish so far, your odds aren't good. At absolute best for us all-but-certain dingers, next Wednesday HBS is sending out probably 4,500 rejections, maybe 50-100 interview invites (all of which will be people that the Adcom was really torn on), and then 100 or so R2 deferrals. Best case scenario, you've got about a 98 or 99 percent chance of getting a rejection next week. Wish it were different -- I'm there with you -- but those are the cold, hard numbers now.

My best guess is that there are 150 spots left to give them flexibility as they go through 2+2 apps. If they take 150, no spots for anyone else...if it's a weak pool and they only take 75, they back-fill with candidates they consider borderline. At least that's how I would do it.

Just my two cents.

Just my two cents.

2+2 has the same admissions deadline as full-time MBA applicants, so I'm sure HBS knows good and well by now the strength of the 2+2 pool and how many from that pool they intend to accept. I would bet anything that they've thoroughly gone through all of those applications by now. As such, I wouldn't believe they would work it like you've laid out.

Obviously, it's just all reading of the tea leaves for everyone on the outside, but if I had to wager I would say they probably keep 25-50 full-time MBA invites open for the final day, just to fully think it over on the most borderline of the borderline candidate pool. Honestly, it's not a good situation to be in either way. Either you've been rejected, or the adcom wasn't impressed with you to the point that they had no problem coming within a hair of rejecting you, which means you're probably still looking at a rejection even if you get an invite.
