Many positives in your profile, especially your Finance background and CA certification.
A prestigious school like IIM A would welcome the interest of someone with prior experience in business finance and would help further advance your career as a professional leader in your field. Unpack your experiences and construct your stories in a way that shows that working progressively in your jobs has given you much more hands-on experience, opportunity to work closely with leaders, more experiential maturity, and more capability to contextualize business problems (specific to your area of work). Consulting goals suit you well. Show a well deliberated goal plan that takes into account your short-term goals in consulting but also what you might be trying to achieve for the long term (aspirational but also motivational).

Your GMAT is a mixed bag. But I see no cause for concern given your strong finance and analytical aptitude.

If I apply with a GMAT score of 650
And say,if I retook it and got a better score, will IIM A consider the updated GMAT score after my submission of application?

Posted from my mobile device

The schools would consider the scores on your application form. But, you are allowed to apply in multiple rounds the same year. Go ahead with R1 with the current score. Applicants with ~650 have been selected in the past too. Decide on the retake only if you don't convert.

I think yes, you can certainly do that. Please submit a scanned copy of the scorecard that you receive at the test center.

All the best!

Hi Shreya1918,

Thanks for sharing your profile.

You have a very unique profile. Being from a legal background working in PSU adds a lot of value to your profile. Your acads also looks good.

Since you have not mentioned about extra curriculars and have not explained your work or achievements, its difficult to evaluate profile holistically.

Still, assuming certain things, your profile is a stand out one.

GMAT score though is on the lesser side. It will be difficult to get into ISB or IIMA (though not impossible). You should realistically target IIMC, IIML and IIMI with this score and keep ISB, IIMA, IIMB as aspirational target which may or may not convert.

Hope it helped. Do register on our website for more detailed discussions.

Shreya1918 hope you are doing great

Several strong points in your profile, including a combination of bachelor's and master's degrees in law, provide a unique blend of legal expertise and business acumen that can be of great value in a variety of industries and leadership positions. With extensive work experience in the energy sector, you can showcase thought leadership in your domain and industry focus during post MBA pursuits. Your work at the PSU would have given you ample opportunities to gain familiarity with corporate legal matters, which enhances your understanding of regulatory and compliance aspects of business management. Overall, you are a very strong candidate for IIM A.

However, your GMAT is a mixed bag. I often advise applicants on this forum to look at GMAT scores with the quantitative and verbal sections individually. Admissions committees evaluate your performance along with that of your peers (from your population group) on a normalized curve. For example, a Q49 score (~75th percentile) is considered good for overrepresented demographic groups at top business schools. If your quantitative score is near this value or you have exceeded this threshold, the admissions committee is confident that you can handle the academically demanding curriculum at IIM A.
Your verbal score is more a reflection of your ability to participate in discussions in a truly global and diverse cohort during MBA.

Feel free to reach out for further advice regarding top B School applications.

Shreya1918: Interesting profile overall, some comments from an initial review:

1. Acads (10th/ 12th) are fine, GPA isn't mentioned (Bachelors/ Masters in Law are strong points though) and the GMAT is on the lower side. What was your GMAT Q/ V split? Would suggest a retake if possible, as it would improve the odds for your target schools.

2. The professional arc is interesting, and there are many profiles that transition from PSU to Private Sector through ISB/ IIM MBA. The key is to clearly identify (a) achievements and learnings from your past/ current roles and experiences, (b) your post-MBA goals: target sector, function, geo and companies, (c) the gaps in skill-sets that an MBA would fill & why specifically ISB/ IIM, and (d) the transferrable skills you bring along from (a) that help you get to (b) leveraging (c)

3. Would suggest having more clarity on what type of consulting you would like to transition to. Some initial options: an MBB, or a boutique (perhaps a legal boutique), or in-house consulting role at a corporate (within legal or otherwise), or any other? This can help craft the narrative stronger.

4. ECs aren't mentioned, however these are important to bring in the "personal" angle to your story and further differentiate yourself. Any involvement in EC activities?

Hope this helps a bit. Feel free to reach out for a deeper chat.

P.S: If it interests you, I am conducting an "ISB Essays Workshop" this weekend with an ISB alum (Co '21). We will decode ISB's new essay prompts and provide insights on how to craft strong essays. Details and registrations at: https://bit.ly/admitstreet_isb

With a 750 GMAT and 7 years work experience in Ministry of defense, why you should be waiting for the next year to apply is beyond our understanding. Regarding things to do for "strengthening profile", our suggestion - apply round 1 of ISB, IIMA and round 2 of IIMB and C (as time is less now). Your profile will be much better if you get an MBA this year itself. Think of improving your profile for your life and career, no one can change their profile within months for MBA applications.

Having said that, you have a great GMAT and profile, just apply. Spend time in application and interview preparation.
