Hi, pls evaluate my profile. Should I apply in R1 or retake GMAT?

GMAT score: 625 ( took it for the first time)

10th : 10 CGPA
12th: 94% CBSE
Graduation: 63.93% ( Bcom DU SOL)
first attempt Chartered Accountant, working in leading Indian Auto OEM since 2 years , 3 years of articleship from Big Four firm.

Regards
A 625 GFE doesn't help, Contrarion, considering the competitive pool at ISB.

Aim for a higher score (ideally 665+ GFE) and make sure you present strong application essays covering your work-ex, post-MBA goals, and why ISB.

All the best!

Regards,
Arvind

Hello Riya – Academic & GMAT Score wise your profile is competitive for ISB.

However, there are not a lot of indicators of leadership from what you have mentioned. Most Ad coms have the impression that CAs atleast in the early stages of their corporate career are more of individual contributors and don’t get a lot of opportunity to demonstrate people management. While your experience might be different, it is critical to highlight at and outside work endeavors where you were accountable for small/mid-sized teams. Potential experience to highlight would be the challenges you overcame and the impact you created as the founder of a club under chain of UNF.

Also, bring across the impact you created – might be a specific project or generally, as a Financial Analyst at Morgan Stanley. Focus on how this experience has prepared you for your post MBA career.

I am an ISB alum,CO15, and have been mentoring applicants for the last 7+ years. Feel free to reach out to me at +919701215544 if you seek professional guidance.

Wishing you all the very best!

Academics are good. GMAT score is also decent, not necessary to retake. But if you feel confident of scoring between 685 and 725 if you retake the exam then that would really uplift your application. You should also be clear on why general management post MBA. Seems a very generic reason. Also add some extra curricular to bring more dimensions to your profile. Feel free to reach out to us at Preppie (https://www.preppie.in/) for a more detailed evaluation

You’ll have to be careful the way you position it. Shouldn’t come across as moonlighting if your firm didn’t officially allow it

Hey, needed a quick profile review for ISB

10th : 8.6
12th (Science) - 76.4% (DPS RKP)
College - Bachelors in Management Studies, University of Delhi - CGPA 7.5 (Distinction/First Class)

My school grades might not the best but this is because I initially used to think my love for math and computers will also translate into love for physics and chemistry and hence IIT is my destination. This ambition and pipe dream was further compounded by clearing KVPY first round in class 11th. I completely shifted my focus to studying for JEE an objective exam. I later on realised that I did not want to pursue engineering and decided to pivot but this was a little too late, I never bothered learning how to write a subjective exam and was focused on getting correct answers and hence screwed up my boards.

But this did not stop me, luckily I took up commerce NCERT books and really enjoyed a lot of disciplines that I was studying and decided to shift to finance which also aligned with my passion for maths. I wrote the DU entrance exam (JAT) and with a stellar score in the exam I got an admission into DU’s flagship program BMS.

I am a highly compeitive person from the start and was able to get myself involved in every single club/society but due to restrictions I had to restrict myself to 3. But I ended up assuming leadership roles in every society. I was the founder and president of my Department of Managment Studies for 3 years, hosting successful annual events, represent my college in various competitions successfully as well.

I also was Vice President and Finance head of the very prestigious society Enactus. I was a key figure who assisted our college to secure a top 15 spot in Enactus Nationals held in Mumbai, competing with the likes of IIT, SSBCS etc (the first and last time my college got this opportunity) , I successfully also won various B Plans for the society and college, got mentored by KPMG executives for a project which I launched and got fundings from IIFCO for the same. I was also heading and founded the project kushkalaya, a water toilet solution in my time with enactus.

I did not stop here, I was also the finance and HR head of the entrepreneurship society of my college. E cell and helped them host a very big shark tank competition where some of the competitors even secured fundings.

I managed to do all of this while getting good grades, (My CGPA of 7.5 could have been much better, sadly I got 5.5 CGPA in one semester where I was very involved with my sisters wedding and many other personal commitments)

But graduating in covid didn’t help my case as the job market was stagnant especially for the field of my choice (Finance)

I was lucky to get a break in Daloopa, a SaaS company where I worked as an Equity Research analyst. I worked over there for 3 months, I realised I wanted to work in more client centric / front office role.

I was lucky to get a break with Cushman and Wakefield (One of the biggest IPCs). I was their youngest recruitment, I worked in their Valuation and Advisory service line where I worked on plethora of big projects even worked on valuation of REIT and many other prestigious projects. I worked there for 9 months.

I later on got an opportunity to work with PKC Advisory. A boutique management consultancy owned by KIPCO (Kuwait Family Holding) where I worked mostly with PE/VC clients. I was again their youngest recruitment, I got a promotion in few months with a massive pay hike courtesy very impressive feedback from most of the clients I worked with and assisted the firm in securing a very lucrative contract due to the same. I even worked with one of the biggest saudi banks, Saudi PIF, Redbull Esports etc while I was at PKC for 1.5 years. I was solely responsible for alot of ESG related projects, valuation, strategy consulting, board performance decks, assisted in a lot of pe exit valuations, assisted in spinoff of a business vector of a client which enabled them to sell their vertical to the biggest telecom player in MENA region. I also managed to clear CFA level 1 while I was at it.

Meanwhile working with PKC, I was a pro bono consultant to G20 India DRR working group (NDMA) where I worked in the capacity of a consultant, drafted a lot of important documents, reviewed policy papers, recorded and analysed various discussion meeting and worked directly under the Director. I was also the MC for three working group meetings held in Gujrat, Mumbai and Chennai and was applauded by various International leaders.

Some time after I decided to leave PKC Advisory. I was being recruited by a boutique consulting startup who planned to deal in MENA as well. I was also was offered another promotion while I was leaving the firm. But I decided to explore this startup avenue which promised me even more learning and direct access to clients and also work on business development firm.

I have been a Business Analyst with this firm Sharp advisory for almost a year now where I have assisted in one of the clients to develop their first annual report, assisting them in getting listed on Main Saudi Market, worked on various internal valuation models, assisted in acquisition deals, made various strategy documents and gave presentations to boardroom.

this is an outdated photo but this is how my work ex looks

I also had started alot of computer science related projects in School, where I worked on my own 2 Projects related to Android Custom ROM (Used by lakhs of people) Project Cardinal but later on gave it up when I decided to not pursue engineering. I also was Physics Society President in school, despite not loving the subject as much.

In short - Not the best grades, but I knew the reason for same, introspected on the same at a young age and made a very sharp pivot and excelling in the same.

Assumed various leadership roles and was successful in a lot of competitions. Was involved in a lot of social contribution via enactus and my internship with WASH.

Post that I was successfully able to land myself in Finance, where I largely worked in front office of big firms and a startup getting multiple promotions in last 3.5 years and on very prestigious projects and worked on VARIETY of finance related assignments and on various different asset classes

Plus was able to show case my academic rigor by converting CFA L1 in first attempt with a 90% + percentile and at the same time getting distinction in DU despite leading 3 societies. Also I believe a good GMAT score should help alleviate any other such converses.

Hey, PhenomMBA

Your profile shows strong leadership, different experiences, and enthusiasm for finance. The variety of projects you have taken on, the promotions you have received and the extracurricular activities you are involved in are all impressive. Even though your academics might not be the best, you have given reasons why and demonstrated resilience when shifting gears to finance, where you have performed extremely well. With your work experience and leadership qualities, ISB is a great fit for you.

Also, don’t stress; you will get it right :D Good luck with your GMAT!

Thanks a lot! Any ideas on what should be a cut off score in my mind for myself? Like at this XYZ score I should definitely apply at this round and not retake

Considering a lot of online scores won’t be valid, some people speculate the average application score to decline by 10-20 points or so! And considering i’m not an engineer with relevant work ex and plenty leadership roles assumed throughout my life!

I personally told myself I should definitely aim for a 665+ for a very strong application but can be somewhat hopeful at a 645 as well?

Decent academics and work experience profile. Aim for a 655+ in GMAT to have higher chances. Showcase your passion as an author to build a more well rounded profile. Your goal post ISB hasn’t been mentioned - ensure that the goal is clear and makes logical sense as per your experiences. With a good GMAT score and strong essays you stand a good chance. Good luck with your prep. You can always reach out to us at Preppie (https://www.preppie.in) for a more detailed conversation
