Copying a post from past years to calm Indians whose interview got waived!!

str1der wrote:

To everyone applying from India. I am a reapplicant and hence am acquainted with how the process works. Let me detail it as I am sure it will calm some nerves:

1. Kellogg, by design, interviews each applicant. However, in areas of high demand of interviews such as India, it is not possible for them to match their alumni to each applicant as each alumni can do only as many interviews
2. Once both Part 1 and Part 2 are submitted, one of the following three scenarios will occur:

i. You will be invited to interview on a day in late Oct/Early Nov. This is essentially an interview day - many alumni will gather at a hotel and many applicants will be interviewed. No clear formula on how the invitees are decided, but I think it depends on who submtited Part 1 earlier as from Kellogg's vantage point everyone has to be interviewed and hence no one is at a higher or lower priority at that point. Once the interview has been completed, the adcom will review your essays and recommendations and you then sit tight until the decision date to hear back from them.

ii. You will get an interview waiver. The Kellogg team does NOT read an applicant's file until their interview is complete. Hence, to avoid delays, they start reading the application first for those in India who weren't sent invited in the first go. The waiver does NOT affect your application negatively - it just means that they are waiving your interview in order to begin reviewing your application

iii. If they like your application, you will receive an invitation to interview. This will be a one to one with an alumnus here, or a Skype with the adcom in Chicago

iv. It may also happen that you don't get this invite after the waiver, in which case it is safe to assume you have been dinged

3. Hence, unlike other countries, in India Kellogg does NOT interview everyone. Also, most people receive a waiver which can then convert/not convert into an interview invite at a later stage.
4. You will NOT be admitted to the program without an interview. Hence, if after the waiver you do not receive an invite, it means you have been dinged.
5. Dates: Please read last year's thread. If I recall correctly, people received the first invites 2 weeks after the Part 2 deadline. People who first received a waiver and then an invite (such as me) kept hearing throughout November. I got my invite around Mid Nov.
6. Hence, if by end Nov you haven't heard from them after a waiver, safe to move on to alternate plans
7. Most people in India will get a waiver - it will test your nerves (tested mine) but it is actually a blessing in disguise. If you receive an invite after a waiver, that means the adcom liked your application and wants to know more - that is a positive sign any day of the year

Hope this answers your queries. Indian applicants should NOT compare their interview timeline to foreign applicants.

Is anyone from India who has received the Skype interview invite from the 1 year program application pool? Any information available for the 1 year program or is it same as the full 2 year program in terms of interview invite schedule?

Thanks

Zell Scholars receive support for their startups  [#permalink]

FROM Kellogg MBA Blog: Zell Scholars receive support for their startups
Image
For some students, starting a business means more than just having a clever idea. It’s a passion, a future career, and a chance to solve industry deficiencies or build a game-changing startup with lasting value.

With that in mind, Kellogg unveiled the Zell Scholars program last year to provide support for students looking to turn their startups into market- and funding-ready businesses, said David Schonthal, program director and a clinical assistant professor of innovation and entrepreneurship.

Recently, 10 students were named to the 2014-15 class.

The application-only, two-quarter program — funded by Equity Group Investments LLC Chairman Sam Zell — launched in 2013 with nine students elected to its inaugural cohort. In addition to funding from the program, those Zell Scholars have raised more than $2.5 million independently to support their companies, Schonthal said.

But the advantages of becoming a Zell Scholar will last long after graduation, Schonthal added.

“It has more to do with helping people who are entrepreneurially minded be successful founders at some point in their careers,” he said. “When they’re ready to take on the challenge and bring something new to market or start their own company, they have the confidence and experience to draw on.”

Professor earns Journal of Finance best paper for second straight year  [#permalink]

FROM Kellogg MBA Blog: Professor earns Journal of Finance best paper for second straight year
Image
Associate Professor Dimitris Papanikolaou had a question. He wondered why investors are so willing to invest in growth firms – like Uber or Facebook – that have historically produced low average returns, when they could be investing in value stocks – like General Electric – that seem to provide a more guaranteed return.

Papanikolaou, who teaches finance at Kellogg, investigated that question in new research that recently won the Amundi Smith Breeden Award for best paper in the top-ranked Journal of Finance. He earned the same award last year for his paper on the value of investing in people.

With this year’s paper, Papanikolaou and his co-author, Leonid Kogan of MIT, examined eighty years of stock market data. Over the years, Papanikolaou said, there have been a number of possible explanations, but their research indicates that investors have a perfectly sensible reason to invest in growth companies.

“Value firms are riskier in the sense that they have more chance of being displaced by new technologies,” Papanikolaou said. They are less likely to capitalize on new advantages and more likely to be hurt by them.

Learn more about their award-winning research.

Alumni Spotlight: Jeff Eschbach ’14  [#permalink]

FROM Kellogg MBA Blog: Alumni Spotlight: Jeff Eschbach ’14
Image

Get to know some of Kellogg’s alumni who are bringing bold entrepreneurial visions to life.

Build, design and problem-solve: That’s all Jeff Eschbach ’14 wanted to do with his career, and for more than 15 years, that’s exactly what he’s done.

As an engineer and technologist, Eschbach has helped design new phones and other mobile technologies for Motorola and created computer chips for Intel.

But now he’s taking his technological acumen to the courtroom with Page Vault, a company he founded in 2012 as a student to independently store and safeguard Internet content for lawyers to use as evidence later in court.

Eschbach created Page Vault after speaking with members of the larger Northwestern community, including law and engineering professors. He and his team were able to pinpoint a growing issue within the legal community: securely capturing web content as evidence.

Acquiring content from places like Facebook and Twitter has become a growing problem as posts can be deleted or altered as easily as they’re published. A simple screen grab from a lawyer’s desktop doesn’t cut it in front of a judge anymore.

“You could fake it, so now you need a trusted third party, and the lawyers now are understanding how important that is,” he says.

Common methods, like making a screen capture, can violate the chain of custody — from capture to court — and tampered evidence could put the whole trial at risk. Other methods like hiring a private investigator or issuing a subpoena are often expensive or don’t capture the desired content in time.

With as much effort as a Google search, Eschbach’s company can quickly find and verify the information’s source via the webpage’s server, then copy, date and store it in the cloud to be retrieved later.

Well, if we all got it then it's probably (hopefully) a glitch in their system. I might call them just to make sure though. I hope this isn't their way of telling me that I didn't get into the 2 year program... :|

I also got this email, even though I already conducted my full-time Kellogg interview weeks ago. I think this must be a glitch. Glad others got it, and it wasn't just that I applied to the wrong program...
