FROM Kellogg MBA Blog: Alumni Spotlight: Luke Tanen ’14

The Kellogg-minted team that honors Chicago innovators is building a new way to support the startup community — by connecting established business leaders’ problems to local startups that might have the solution.

“Startups have a hard time getting the ear of big companies. They may not have a lot of credibility, or know who to talk to,” says Luke Tanen ’14. “It makes sense to bridge these two worlds. You can think of what we’ve created as a matching program.”

The story of the Innovators Connection starts back in 2010.

While researching job postings, then-Kellogg student Luke Tanen came across an opening for a director’s job at the Chicago Innovation Awards, which showcases the region’s most imaginative new ventures. He noticed a somewhat familiar name: Tom Kuczmarski.

“This name Kuczmarski appeared in both places, the Chicago Innovation Awards and over at Kellogg,” Tanen says. “So, I just sent him a note one day, saying I think what he’s doing is really cool and that I’d love to interview for the position.”

Kuczmarski, one of the co-founders of the awards and a senior lecturer at Kellogg’s Center for Research on Technology & Innovation, met with Tanen. Kuczmarski soon realized that Tanen, who hails from New York, was passionate about working within Chicago’s startup business community.

“Luke was one of many great candidates who popped up, and he’s the one we hired,” says Kuczmarski, who runs an innovation consultancy and is considered one of the city’s foremost experts. “He’s a powerhouse. I just love working with him.”

A collaboration was born. And since moving up to executive director in 2012, Tanen has worked with Kuczmarski to expand the organization into new territories. Their latest is the Innovators Connection, which helps startups connect their services to big-name companies.

I have been lurking in this forum for quite some time now...though this might be off topic, considering the invites discussion, I wanted to know of any MMM student who is active in GC. I know, I've just shot in the dark

Does anyone have any ideas or insights into when those of us who received waivers should expect to hear about a remote interview? Is there something of an unofficial 'deadline' to hear back by, or is it more of a rolling process?

Not in your shoes, but from what I've read, it's within a couple of weeks. Seeing as the waivers went out last week, I'd assume by the end of November.

Also when I highlight text in the status page, it shows up as red. I thought a read something about that in last years form (using chrome).

Same for me. Seems everyone has this box now.

Would love to know if others are highlighting as red as well. One person reported it last year, and they were dindged ....

Also, I have been tracking the dates on my video essay:

• 1 date change before my interview (not sure why this would be the case)
• then I had my on campus interview
• another date change 2 days after (i imagine the student review)
• another date change 2 days after (i imagine the director review)

I think there might be 1 final step (i.e. kate smith final check off).

I interviewed on the 14th, and though I never tracked it, my last update on the video essay was the 28th. No change since.

REGARDING THE RED HIGHLIGHTED TEXT:

So after having a mini-heart attack, I went ahead and looked into the red highlight, and I believe it means nothing.

The apply page, even when not logged in, highlights as red. So it seems that the red highlight is a default, and so should be red for everyone.

Based on my (limited) knowledge of web design, If the highlighted text was based on the decision, the web developer would have had to write an "if" statement, linking the highlighted text to the source of the decision. This is highly unlikely. There are two reasons I see for the highlighted red text:

Theory 1: When the adcomm goes through the application, they likely do it through that portal, and may highlight text as they are reading. The red allows the text to pop out.

Theory 2: The developer of the site has a great sense of humour!

Two questions regarding the interview:

(i) For those who have interviewed on-campus, could you comment on whether your interviewer was a member of the adcom, an alum or a current student?

(ii) Does anyone know, as a general matter, if the interviewer has reviewed the interviewee's application in advance (or whether the interview is conducted "blindly" or only based on the applicant's resume)?

Thanks in advance!

Interesting...my dates changed as follows:

1) First change a week after I submitted (somewhere around 29/30th Sep)
2) Had my off campus interview 20th October
2) Second date change 30th October
3) Third date change 03 Nov
4) Another date change 04 Nov!!

With the last change, does that mean they've already made a decision on my application...yikes!!

People still seem to be interviewing, so they can't have made decisions just yet.

From a 2012 chat transcript:

CA: Walk us through the life of an application in your office from an operational standpoint. What happens between the time an applicant clicks “submit” and the time the committee offers a final decision (e.g. how many “reads” does it get, how long is each read, who reads it, does the committee convene to discuss it as a group, etc.)?
KS: The Kellogg admissions process is thorough and holistic as we seek to embrace individuals who really embrace our culture. We engage in a 360-degree review and try to get to know applicants on all levels. The Admissions Committee is made up of students and admissions officers and directors in the admissions team. One of the things we are proud of is the student component and participation in this process. We see this as a unique element. Many times they are asking, “Is this someone I can see as a classmate?”
So the first stop is a student review. Then there is an officer review. And from there it goes to final review and sign off by a director. At times we come together and discuss applicants. So each individual application is usually reviewed collectively for about three hours. In terms of which candidates we come together to discuss as a group, ironically it’s sometimes the most amazing applicants. In truth, we engage in discussions on many different topics. It’s unique to each applicant and each file. Sometimes we will engage on the level of, “Did you see these attributes?” It’s not necessarily for a specific reason but rather as an opportunity to further understand each candidate.

Thanks for the suggestion; I've tried my luck with a MMM alumni . I didn't get any response :| I guess I've to now bump in some current MMM student linkedin account to get more insights.

I think they can make decisions on you personally already. I really think they go through and assess each person without thinking of the rest of the class. They give a yes or a no up front after people have reviewed your file. Then they probably look at everyone they have said yes to as a group, and if they notice the class profile is skewed heavily with a certain type of applicant, they probably waitlist the weaker applications from that pool to balance the class out. I'd guess that most of us that have interviewed have a yes or no attached to our application by now, or will shortly.
