Hi
Floyd97,
The LBS reference form, in its comments section, states: "
As a guideline to complete the reference form you should aim to write no more than 500 words per question. Please note that 500 words is the maximum amount and not a requirement."
So, your recommender doesn't need to write an extensive recommendation. Actually, with the 500-word limit, LBS is trying to avoid recommenders submitting very lengthy letters.
That said, there are two questions where recommenders are encouraged to write closer to the word limit. These are:
- What would you say are the applicant's key strengths and talents?
- How do the applicant's performance, potential, and personal qualities compare to those of other individuals in similar roles? This is because it's in the applicant's best interest that recommenders cover these two questions as extensively as they can. But obviously, quality should be prioritized over quantity. A shorter but impactful response is far better than one that feels padded.
The other three questions can be answered in much fewer words, e.g., 100–200.
I hope this helps.
Warm regards,
Alex

My recommender for LBS tells me that there are 5 questions in the recommendation that require responses of up to 500 words each. Is it really necessary for them to fill in 2.5k words in total - while he is willing to write me a recommendation, he does not feel he will be able to spend the time required to write such extensive recommendations for multiple schools. How would the Adcom view shorter but still impactful recommendations?
Would appreciate any insight anyone may have on this.
