I wasn't sure whether to post this here to create a new thread, but I will be graduating from DMSB soon, and I wanted to warn everyone who might find this - do not come to this school! How it is the #1 International MBA program in the US is beyond me, and it makes me realize how useless US News rankings are. Anyway, here are my thoughts, and hopefully they save anyone who might be considering the school the grief our cohort has gone through.
I could write pages about how terrible the experience was, but let me hit the highlights.
First, most of the required courses that use "International" or "Global" in their names your first two semesters are neither global nor international. You will have seven courses that use this sloganeering in their names, but only two will touch on global issues. Honestly, I wish there was a way to sue them for false advertising.
Second, the instructional method employed by most professors within the required courses is insultingly antiquated with zero application to the real world. The majority of the courses are rote learning, and you're expected to know formulas to memorize for an exam without any real world, practical application of the course material. It's like this in accounting, supply chain, finance, and econ courses that are required. It's dreadful and insulting. I would call the curriculum "undergrad on steroids", as most of the professors are undergraduate professors who got roped into teaching an MBA course.
Third, the Office of Career Management is horrendous. They do next to nothing to help - ignore every company the website might list. 95% of those companies simply do not recruit at the school. What happens is students find these jobs on their own, and then the school tries to take credit for them. The kicker is, when you confront them about this, they say, “Well, we give you the tools.” Anyone can figure out how to use LinkedIn to network! I paid to attend graduate school for connections and an OCM willing to help, and I got nothing in return.
Fourth, the MBA Office is terrible. They do nothing to advocate on student's behalf, and they barely communicate with anyone. I've never seen an office in a university so lazy and disinterested in the group they are supposed to help.
Fifth, and finally, Dean Brews is genuinely wretched. He's sexist/misogynistic. He's obsessed with South Africa because he is from there, so your international experience will be there if you're on the global track, but... South Africa simply is not a player in the global realm. The program completely ignores Asia and Latin America to pursue his ego. He is a dinosaur who desperately needs to be fired.
Do not, under any circumstances, attend this school! I just hope enough people see this so admissions numbers decline. The last thing this program deserves is its #1 ranking. It is nowhere near that on any sensible level. The school has ZERO reputation with recruiters or outside of a little Columbia, SC bubble. Do not waste your time and money like so many of us have!
I don't know if direct messages are a thing or not here, but I'm happy to answer any questions. RUN IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION OF THIS SCHOOL!
