adcom might say that they see the profiles "Holistically", but at the end of the day they have pressure on them to increase the average gmat score of the next cohort
GMAT score is definitely not the sole component, but certainly is the biggest component in an applicant’s profile.

Agreed.
Too many engineers score high on the gmat so instead of swallowing your GMAT score the adcoms will go for someone with a similar profile and a high gmat score(considering you have not done something that can be classified as an extra ordinary). Trust me the competition is intense and Indian male engineer is the most competitive pool to be in.

Yes this is a harsh truth. But I would not go so far and say nothing will compensate for GMAT. Things are a bit different across schools. Top 3/M7/T15/T30 or 50.
Good thing about Vanderbilt is they even accept GRE and EA. So that is a great workaround for the GMAT score. The averages for the other two scores are not so brutal as GMAT and you may getaway with a good profile
