I am also confused by the MIT process. 760/8 IR/6 AWA/4.0 GPA here, with work experience and educational background that I think is pretty solid. Good enough to be invited by Harvard, at least.
I didn't even get a view of my optional essay before being dinged. Ultimately, I'm not feeling too bad about this though. I know that there are tons of amazing candidates for these programs, and even if I did get a comprehensive review (which I probably did), it is very likely likely that I would have been dinged anyways.
Idk, that's pretty messed up that they didn't view your optional essay. Personally, my optional essay was a
huge part of my story and the brand I was trying to portray to the school. If they aren't always looking at the optional essay (or only looking at it for on-the-fence candidates), they should make that clear so that candidates can prioritize the content accordingly.
Well, to be fair, I think optional can go both ways, it is optional for you, and optional for them as well. I remember there's one guy that got invited fairly early didn't even have his optional essay viewed. I assume he's good enough that they want him badly. In this case, they probably think your profile is not good enough that even the optional essay won't help. (which I have no idea how in the world they did that.)
I think there's always some luck involved, and you can't control that....good luck to you guys and hopefully you'll get in somewhere else!
