Hey everyone! I’ve had my essays written for a bit now, with the 250 word count I’ve found it difficult to add both a narrative flare and key terms like courses/clubs. Not sure if anyone else struggled with this. But I guess ultimately, does anyone know if admissions is looking for more of a narrative approach or a straight forward answer to the question?
Mainly aimed at essay 1

Keep straight forward answers ... however in 250 words essay there may be a little scope of building narrative too.

I really tried but had to cut fluff words down (which made it sound more personal and like me) to fit my actual answer to the questions

This is good then

Essays should reflect more of YOU than your language skills

Yeah no sorry I don’t think I wrote that right, I meant I’ve had to take out ways that made it sound like me or in a narrative to fit my response to the questions
Do you think that’s fine?

Also not sure if anyone else did this but I added one measurable impact made through an example I gave in my second essay (hopefully that doesn’t feel resume-like)

No that isn’t ...

I would say be selective of information that wish to put in essay. At no point, should an essay reflect that’s not you.

Sometime we have to sacrifice a few less impactful stories to build a narrative to reflect potential through just one properly built narrative which truly represents our character, thought process and approach.

Personalisation is a key ingredient and not something to be compromised with at any stage.

I appreciate the input! How do you decide what to let go of?

If it helps, I mentioned a couple courses and clubs

I guess to show I did my research

The incident that is not as close to your heart as the other is, should be chosen to let go of (only to include in some other essay if possible).

Course should be mentioned if they are distinctive to that particular school and are aligned with your short term goal, else they don’t add much value.

Club should be mentioned only i fyou can reflect on some previous participation in such community or are bringing a skill that can help in building a collective learning ecosystem.

They want to know your personal impact as well though. I think you can just add some personal stories, I am a big fan of a certain restaurant in Austin now or something like that - Just to add that personal touch

I prefer to ask candidates to avoid writing about generic core courses which are common to every curriculum in every other fine school

Yeah I mentioned what I did throughout the program and things I did in those clubs as well

I only mentioned courses since the prompt says to note academics

Talk to some alumni/students about how their experience has been so far, and how the school impacted them. This will give you some real first hand insight into what their experience has been like. I personally got a lot of points for my essay through such coffee chats
