I was going through the Gmatclub's Grammar Book (2020) and found this in the 'Comparisons' chapter (Page 78):
NOTE: In correct English, a subject pronoun is always used after the comparison phrase. This is often misused in speech.
Mary is as tall as she.
You are not as old as I.But on the next page, I found this example where 'me' has been used instead of 'I'.
He has more comics than me.I'm a bit confused now. Am I supposed to use 'I' or 'me' when using comparisons?
Hi
lipikatiwari ,
In the second comparison, you are comparing the nouns ( He is compared with me [ since, "me" is the object of the preposition "than", the objective form is used]
Whereas, "Mary is as tall as
she. " here you are comparing the verbs Mary
is as tall as she
is; Since "is" is implied so it can be omitted
Similarly, "You are not as old as
I" , here also "You are not as old as
I am" ; Since, "am" is implied so it is omitted.
You need to check whether a verb is been compared or a noun.
However, both are actually correct and this has been often debated. I would love to hear more views on this.
Hope this helps.
