Your scores, being a domestic candidate, and career footprint allow you to be a compelling candidate to get in somewhere, subject to your narratives, etc. Regarding trimming down your school selection - you need to do your due diligence by engaging with students, alumni, and adcom.

I am currently a Client Service Specialist working with Pooled and IMA clients at Insight Investment, where I act as both the daily representative of the firm to institutional clients and an internal advocate for client needs. In this role, I work closely with pension schemes managing day-to-day and ad hoc client requests while ensuring high standards of service delivery in a regulated investment management environment.

Previously, I have gained experience across client servicing and proposal management roles within global asset management firms, including Federated Hermes and Barings. These roles have given me broad exposure to how large financial institutions operate, how teams collaborate across functions, and how strategic and operational decisions are made to support business growth and client outcomes.

Alongside my corporate career, I am the founder of Board in the City, a non-profit social initiative creating physical and digital community spaces for young professionals through board games and shared experiences. Since launching, I have grown an engaged community of over 600 members, delivered multiple sold-out events across London, and raised over £1000 in 6 months for charity partners. Building Board in the City has strengthened my skills in stakeholder engagement, partnerships, operations, marketing, and community-led growth, while reinforcing my interest in how organisations create sustainable value beyond profit.

In the long term, my goal is to move into consulting to deepen my understanding of how businesses operate across industries, solve complex problems, and scale effectively. I see consulting as a critical step in developing strong commercial judgement, strategic thinking, and execution skills before ultimately launching my own ventures that sit at the intersection of business, community, and social impact.

Is consulting your 'long-term' AND 'short-term' goal? If yes, then fine; if not, then reconsider. The longer you stay out of consulting, the more difficult it becomes to enter the industry. Hence, consulting as an LT goal with something else as an ST goal may not be a feasible/good strategy.

Hi
Priyanka here from ARINGO. Speaking about your profile, your profile looks strong on the surface. Strong academic and professional foundation, a near-perfect GPA + CPA, and a clear mix of business finance in petrochemicals plus strategy consulting / IB gives you both credibility and a logical pivot into the energy sector post-MBA.

For 2027 R1, your biggest swing factor will be the GMAT, but with this background you should be aiming high to fully unlock M7 and top European outcomes. One thing to watch is the very broad school list, you’ll want to tighten this into clear reach, target, and safety buckets and tailor your story, IB to energy. Overall, you have a competitive global profile, and with a strong GMAT and focused school strategy, you should be well positioned across top US and European programs.

I’d be happy to offer you a free profile review for your target programs to see where you stand and how to boost your chances, happy to help!
No pressure, no strings - just helpful insights on where you stand and how you can strengthen your chances.

Profile Review (2027 Intake)

I’m an Indian applicant aiming to pivot into AI/ML Product Management post-MBA (long-term: build/lead AI-driven products as a founder/tech leader). I care a lot about scholarships/ROI and I have a recommendation constraint (details below).

Academics / Test Scores (strength):

GMAT: Planning to give

Undergrad (BSc Mathematics, Tier 3 Indian University): 9.08/10

MSc (Tier 2 UK university): 69.83% (WES evaluation: 3.78 / 4.0)

Work experience (Aug 2023 – present):
I’m a Data Scientist at a small B2B AI/data SaaS company . The team is very small and flat (~4 people) and I’m effectively the most senior technical contributor, so my scope goes beyond classic DS. I own work end-to-end across:

ML/AI: designing time-series models and pipelines (training → inference → monitoring)

Backend/infra: building databases, backend APIs, and deployment/reliability workflows for the product

Product delivery: owning features from concept → design → implementation → deployment; participating in scoping/prioritization/roadmap discussions

Client-facing: running technical/product demos and translating ML/infra value into stakeholder outcomes

Leadership: mentoring interns, reviewing work, and helping define processes/standards (despite a flat org and non-senior title)

Leadership / extracurriculars:

Undergrad: co-founded a public speaking club in first year; marketed it, drove signups, and ran it for ~3–4 months until COVID shut campus activities.

MSc (UK): volunteered with a renowned charity via campus activities (supporting fundraising events, not a leadership role).

Career goals:

Post-MBA: AI Product Manager / ML Product Manager / Data Product Manager in B2B SaaS, AI/ML platforms, data infrastructure/analytics products

Long-term (7–10+ years): tech leadership → founder/C-level building AI products.

Constraints:

Budget: can stretch only for truly elite/high-ROI; scholarships are very important.

Recommendations: I have one very strong recommender (current MD/direct manager). Team is flat; for schools requiring 2 LORs, my second option would be a colleague.
What I’m asking for:

What’s a sensible reach/target/safety mix for my goals given my ROI and LOR constraints?

With ~3 years experience at application (~4 at matriculation), how do I best frame “Why MBA, why now” ?

What are the biggest perceived weaknesses (small-company brand, flat titles, etc.) and what are the highest-leverage actions I should take in the next 6–9 months?

ssk0509, I like the way you have put across your profile. It was easy to read and ends with specific questions. I will address these for you:
1. Choice of b-schools: Its a little early to finalize a list of b-schools, but you must spend the coming months building an understanding of what different b-schools have to offer in terms of academics, experiential learning opportunities, professional networking, clubs, class composition, campus life and most important of all- career outcomes. If you wish to be in the tech industry post MBA, pick b-schools which have shown a strong pipeline for product management in the recent years (unfortunately, recruitments have not been great). Also, your GMAT/ GRE score will have a huge role to play in your b-school selection. Once you have a score, you can create a realistic school of b-schools.
2. The 4 year's experience will come in handy in showing your leadership skills and achievements, which should be quantified. You have led projects from start to finish and will hopefully have some impactful stories that establish you as a leader/ innovator/ collaborator/ a hand-on guy. The 'why now" question is about addressing why this year is the right time to apply for an MBA -with what you have learnt and achieved in your career so far why do feel now is the right time to do an MBA. Maybe you know what your goals are and feel ready to gain the skill to achieve them. Maybe, you've had an accelerated career growth and are now ready for newer challenges. The reasoning should be personal to you and relevant for your career goals. In terms of your goals itself, you may not want to narrow down your choice of companies by being very specific, such as AL PM/ ML PM.
3. to further enhance your profile, you could pursue some hobbies or interests that show you are invested in your development (and helping others) outside work. It can sometimes be a disadvantage working for a small company, but more importantly, it depends on what kind of challenges do you face and how good is the quality of your work. Your learning curve can be very steep in a smaller and flatter organization and you should be able to put this in the right context in your applications.
4. Its great that you already have one recommender lined up. most b-schools ask only for one. If you need a second one, you could ask a skip level manager, another team's senior or your company's CXO.

DO reach out for a more indepth discussion on our profile.

I've copied your questions and can answer them here: What’s a sensible reach/target/safety mix for my goals given my ROI and LOR constraints? Right now you are asking for a unicorn in that you say you want only the most elite programs and then you say you need a scholarship. You are going to have more scholarship options if you look to the top 25-30 programs and also you might want to look at some of the Tech MBA programs like Cornell or NYU Stern or even the Kellogg MBAi degree. But also look at some of the programs on the west coast like Foster, Anderson, Marshall and for these schools I could see your scholarship options to be very strong.

With ~3 years experience at application (~4 at matriculation), how do I best frame “Why MBA, why now” ? There's no quick answer here but we could discuss further on a consultation but I'm a big fan of having an example of something you have learned from work where you are now curious to learn more and this is driving you in the MBA direction. I don't like to hear people say oh... I've mastered everything where I am (no one has truly done that). So instead don't focus on why you have outgrown where you are-- instead let the focus be on something you've learned in your role that makes you now curious to learn more about X. And the MBA is a way to follow that through.

What are the biggest perceived weaknesses (small-company brand, flat titles, etc.) and what are the highest-leverage actions I should take in the next 6–9 months? One of the best things you can do in the next 3 months is really get to know yourself and what you want to share in your profile. We have an excellent program to help people do just that-- and it then makes the application process much easier. I can explain more in a free consult and the link for that is here: https://www.stratusadmissionscounseling ... sultation/

Hi
Priyanka here from ARINGO. Speaking about your profile, you have got a solid academic + technical base and a clear AI/PM story, which is exactly what AdComs like. Your biggest swing factor will be the GMAT, a strong score will anchor scholarship conversations and help offset the Tier-3 undergrad brand.

With about 4 years of experience, your “why MBA now” is believable if you position it as scaling from strong individual technical ownership to structured product leadership, business judgment, and cross-functional influence needed for AI product roles. You will need to quantify impact, decision ownership, and leadership moments clearly.

For the school list, once your GMAT is in hand, you can refine into a clean reach/target/safety mix based on scholarship likelihood.

Over the next few months, focus on:
GMAT execution
formalizing leadership, mentoring, process ownership and product roadmap influence
measurable business impact from your ML/product work
securing a second recommender who can credibly speak to collaboration/leadership.

I’d be happy to offer you a free profile review for your target programs to see where you stand and how to boost your chances, happy to help!
No pressure, no strings - just helpful insights on where you stand and how you can strengthen your chances.

Thanks for sharing your profile, @ssk0509. You seem to be a technical candidate with product adjacency, which is good for PM. However, Tier-3 undergrad > neutralized by 9.08 GPA, UK MSc (3.78 WES), good academic credibility, small-company brand, biggest perception risk. ~3 years at application > slightly early but workable, and no GMAT yet.

You are not a natural M7 candidate yet, but you can be viable for strong T20–T30 schools with scholarships, which fits your ROI goal.

Try to aim for a strong GMAT score. For ROI-focused candidates, test scores can be your biggest lever.

About your strengths- End-to-end ownership (ML → infra → deployment), Product involvement (roadmap/scoping), client-facing demos, mentoring interns, and senior scope despite flat org.

Risks- Unknown brand, no formal people management title, and only 3 years at the application. This means you must sell scope, not title. Admissions care about decision-making authority, complexity handled, and ambiguity navigated.

You should consider adding Ross, Marshall, and Anderson if GMAT is strong.

“Why MBA, Why Now?” You are slightly early. Your answer must be: I already operate at the intersection of ML + infra + product. To move from technical execution to full P&L ownership in AI platforms, I need structured exposure to go-to-market strategy, pricing, leadership, and capital allocation. NOT, I want to move into product.

You can frame MBA as: Accelerating from IC to product leader and expanding from feature ownership to business ownership.

Fixes:
1) Small company brand. Fix by: quantifying revenue impact, highlighting client logos, and demonstrating scale of deployment.
2) No formal management title. Fix by: showing influence without authority, conflict resolution examples, and strategic decision input.
3) LOR Constraint: One strong MD LOR is good; the second from a colleague is risky. Better alternatives can be: UK MSc professor, client stakeholder, board advisor (if credible), and avoid peer-level LOR if possible.

Questions for you:
1) Can you show revenue impact tied directly to your models?
2) Have you made a product decision that overruled engineering consensus?
3) Do you want Big Tech PM or AI startup PM post-MBA?

We’d love to learn more about your academic background, extracurricular activities, work experience, and personal journey so that we can provide a tailored profile evaluation and an honest school assessment. Feel free to book an evaluation session.

Cheers!

Hello folks!

I am a 28-year-old Indian male, planning to apply to INSEAD/IESE/LBS for their intake of August 2027. I have given my GMAT and have scored a 665 Q80 VR86 DI83

Currently working for Bain Capability Network (part of Bain & Co.) for 4+ years, serving as a project leader. Prior to this, I have worked for 2 years with McKinsey Knowledge Centre (part of McKinsey & Co.). In my current role, I work actively on international projects with a focus on the Middle East, as I did in my previous role.

Did my undergraduate degree from the University of Delhi, B.Com (H) and after college, I had my own business in international trade for a few months.

Post-MBA goal is to remain within MBB, preferably in the Dubai office.

I really need input as to whether I need a higher score than this or if it's good enough for R1? As I understand, GMAT, though vital, is only a part of the overall application, and I do see that my profile is aligned with their average class profile. Scholarships are definitely preferred, but not a deal breaker; I am okay taking a loan for the entire college fee and then using my savings for living expenses.

Please suggest. Thanks!

Hi, here is a quick evaluation from our team:

Overall read: This is a very strong mid-career consulting-heavy profile for INSEAD, especially with international exposure and leadership in Bain Capability Network projects.

What works well:

6+ years of consulting experience at top-tier firms (Bain and McKinsey) — highly aligned with MBB post-MBA goals.

Project leadership experience with international scope — demonstrates both leadership and global perspective.

UG degree + entrepreneurial experience adds diversity, showing initiative and risk-taking.

GMAT Focus ~655 with strong Q/VR/DI is competitive; solid foundation to build on if aiming higher.

Key focus areas:

Focus on demonstrating impact in your consulting roles — highlight projects led, revenue/efficiency impact, client influence, and mentorship.

Articulate clearly why INSEAD over other top programs — your international exposure is a key hook.

Consider whether you want to target other schools like LBS, HEC, or Wharton for MBB placement diversification.

Score guidance:

GMAT Focus 655 is solid for INSEAD, but a 660–670+ could make you more competitive for scholarships or stretch schools.

Verdict:
You have a competitive profile for INSEAD and your MBB post-MBA goal. Your test performance and ability to frame consulting impact + international leadership will be the main levers.

Hi Conqueror31,

I have worked with so many folks with a similar profile like yours for LBS, INSEAD, HEC Paris and IESE, so I understand the strengths of your profile. A 665 GMAT is not a bad score, but it doesn't bring you any advantage either and can be troublesome if you are being compared with other applicants from BCN/ similar background. I suggest you make another attempt with your eyes on a 30+ points increase. It will specifically help for LBS.
A few other things:
1. Your goals are valid, but when you get down to writing them, show a passion behind them and the difference you wish to create in the world. For someone working at BCN/ Mck Digital, an MBA is a natural step to move into strategy consulting. Also, Dubai has become a hot location as there's still a consulting pipeline there as compared to UK or Europe. So, with these given factors, you would want to show that you have a larger and more ambitious career purpose than just making a role and geography transition. Bringing this thinking into your goals essay will help you write a more personalized answer which will help in admission.
2. ECAs can bring a differentiating element to your profile. Both INSEAD and LBS applications have questions around ECAs and these give applicants a great chance to showcase their multi-faceted personality. Incase you haven't built on these since your college, now is the time to actively get involved and strengthen this part of your profile.

I'd be happy to have a more detailed discussion with you on your profile. Feel free to fill this profile evaluation form, should you be interested: https://mbadecoder.com/services/free-pr ... valuation/

Currently leading a small team as Manager-1 (Supply chain). I will be soon completing 6 years working as a project lead in a $4Billion US based residential solar energy company which designs, manufactures and sells micro-inverters, Batteries, EV charges etc. for home energy management. My role as a project lead is to establish the end to end the supply chain for a product from initial concept to production which typically requires managing/controlling the product cost, component development, reducing the tariff impacts, component procurement at all our factories in USA, India and China.

Class X- 84%
Class 12- 96.9%
B tech in Mechanical from a top state college- 8.3 CGPA
M tech in Manufacturing systems from BITS Pilani (Rajasthan)- 9.3 CGPA

Currently at 575 level in GMAT with 2 months of preparation, targeting to hit 675+ in next 3 months. Slightly worried if going for an MBA after an M tech hinders my chances of getting into my target schools.

Its good that you have shortlisted a good bunch of schools. Regarding your masters, I would say that it is actually a good plus point for you. It shows strong academic rigor, which b-schools like, specifically IIMs. However, you may have to justify to the interviewers quite elaborately why you want to do a 2nd masters. So, be ready with a great answer for that. Your current levels of GMAT are quite concerning though. I do respect your enthusiasm, but taking the score from 575 to 675 is pretty difficult. For your profile, a 625 is adequate and 645 is well beyond sufficient for IIMs and ISB. Foreign schools operate at totally different criteria so I can't comment on it much.

HI Sravan,

Why do you think a master's degree will hinder your chances of admission? If you look at class profiles on b-school websites, you will see that almost 10% of a top MBA class has candidates with advanced degrees. A master's degree shows your ability to engage with a subject and also your commitment. I like the fact that you have performed well in both your undergrad and grad courses, which adds a positive element to your academic arc. Now, top that with a super GMAT performance. For US top 10 MBA programs, you should aim much higher (think 705+), so prep with this mindset.
Your work experience sounds relevant. I have usually seen folks working on the supply chain side do well in MBA applications (my own applicant went to Wharton). You will need to build your applications so that they show your leadership impact (leading new initiatives, challenging status quo, innovating, influencing reluctant colleagues to adopt new ways of doing things etc.) , $$ achievements (costs saved/ efficiency achieved) and a clear and realistically ambitious career goals narrative. The international exposure is great, and something you must highlight.
I will suggest you build up on your ECAs over the coming months by pursuing hobbies and interests. You've not mentioned about these, but they are an important component for your self development.

I’m a finance professional with over four years of experience across FP&A, marketing finance, and order-to-cash operations in leading multinational organizations. I currently manage a global marketing budget of over USD 70M, where I lead forecasting, variance analysis, and ROI optimization to improve spend efficiency and support strategic decision-making.

Earlier, I managed pricing and revenue operations for international contracts exceeding USD 100M across the Middle East, collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure compliance, profitability, and smooth execution. These experiences have strengthened my understanding of how strategic financial insights can drive business outcomes at scale.

I did BCom and am a CIMA-qualified professional (UK) with multiple national-level ranks, along with a CS Foundation (national rank too).

Post-MBA, I aim to transition into strategy or product management roles where I can leverage my financial acumen to drive business growth and customer impact. I’m particularly interested in consumer and lifestyle-driven industries, where data-backed decision-making meets creativity and brand strategy

Hey
Priyanka here from ARINGO. Speaking about your profile, your profile looks good on the surface. You have got solid finance experience across FP&A, marketing finance, and revenue ops, and handling a $50M+ budget definitely shows leadership and business impact.

The CIMA qualification with national ranks adds credibility and offsets any quant concerns. INSEAD, HEC, and ISB are all realistic targets given your experience, though the PE switch might need a bit of story work, focus on linking your current analytical and strategy exposure to investment decision-making. Do you have a GMAT score yet? or any mock scores? With a good GMAT score, strong essays, and clear post-MBA goals, you’ll have a really competitive shot.

I’d be happy to offer you a free profile review for your target programs to see where you stand and how to boost your chances, happy to help!

Thanks for sharing your profile @veroaperiam. You have good quantitative credibility (CIMA), cross-border finance experience, and high-impact ownership (large budgets & contracts). Your key tasks: Get a strong GMAT, demonstrate direct investment/transaction readiness (modeling, deal exposure, portfolio/valuation work), and target schools and networking that feed PE recruiters. INSEAD / HEC / ISB are sensible choices; add a few PE-feeder schools to your list to widen options.

Other schools you can explore: LBS, Columbia / Booth / Wharton / Stern, Oxford Saïd / IESE / Cambridge Judge.

Private equity hiring patterns have also shifted recently: large PE firms adjusted early-offer practices and timing (some delaying early recruiting), so recruiting calendars may move, and competition will be intense for juniors with direct deal experience. This means: networking, demonstrable modeling & valuation skills, internships or project experience, and alumni advocacy will be decisive.

Good technical credentials: CIMA + CS Foundation + BCom + measurable finance ops ownership → immediate credibility. Managing a global marketing budget of USD 50M and pricing/revenue ops for $100M+ contracts, these are headline metrics for your resume/essays. Cross-border exposure & stakeholder management, attractive to global PE funds evaluating cross-country deals. Combination of strategy + operations: valuable for PE value creation roles (post-acquisition operational improvements).

Gaps to close:
Direct deal/investment experience (critical for PE). Get short-term, high-impact project work: pro-bono or paid PE/VC analyst projects, join a boutique M&A advisory or internal strategy team, or help an early-stage fund with market due diligence or financial models. Deliver a completed LBO or valuation model you can show and discuss.

GMAT FE 675+ (aim 730 classic if possible). This is a safe target to be competitive at INSEAD/HEC and for good consideration at top PE feeders.

Finish a dedicated financial modeling course and complete case projects. Add these to your application and LinkedIn.

PE-specific narrative: Convert responsibilities into investment-facing outcomes: like “I optimized marketing ROI, enabling reallocation of $X to higher-return channels, an approach similar to portfolio rebalancing” is weak phrasing; instead, focus on value-creation levers, margin expansion, or restructuring that mirror PE playbooks.

Start alumni outreach now (INSEAD/HEC/ISB alumni in PE), request informational interviews, and target 2-3 mentorship relationships.

Have you taken any GMAT diagnostic yet? If yes, what score? If not, when can you plan to take one? Do you have any direct exposure to investor/deal work (due diligence, vendor/vendor consolidation, budgeting for acquisitions, valuations)? Preferred post-MBA geography for PE (London, Singapore, NYC, India)? Are you open to starting in operational/portfolio roles before deal roles? Do you plan to pursue any further credentials before applying?

We would love to learn more about your academic background, extracurricular activities, professional experiences, and personal journey so we can offer a more tailored assessment of your profile and evaluate your chances at your target schools more accurately. IIT UG in Civil Engineering (Top 10% of batch), working in State Oil and Gas (Fortune 500) company in B2B Sales role.

I drive revenue of USD 50MM (converted from INR actual per year). I am already leading a sales team from the start in my area.
Additionally, I have worked in leadership roles in college via Positions of Responsibility.
Also, 2 awards at work in my 2 years of working full time for performance.
I have organized CSR activities end-to-end medical camps, cleanliness drives with government bodies.
I'll be able to score over 740 in GMAT FE, based on trends.

My doubts are:
- Will a PSU experience be valued at M7/INSEAD? And companies post-MBA?
- What can I do to enhance my profile?
- Is the timeline good or I have to wait further?
- Since promotions are time-bound, would it affect the perception?
- Is the post-MBA target good to go? Or any changes needed?

It is less about the value of your PSU experience and more about the relevance of your B2B Sales experience in a foreign market post-MBA (unless you intend to return to India). Quoting Consulting has become a much-abused post-MBA target because most people haven't invested the effort to understand how a consulting firm is even structured and where will they fit in. Hence, your entire game plan for MBA applications needs to be thought-through deeply.

Hi
Priyanka here from ARINGO. Speaking about your profile, your profile looks credible, especially if you deliver on the 740+ GMAT. An IIT UG, strong academics, and 4+ years at a Fortune 500 PSU with real P&L ownership and people leadership are all meaningful signals for top schools. To your questions: yes, PSU experience is valued at M7/INSEAD as long as you frame it correctly, AdComs care far more about scale, impact, and leadership than whether the employer is public or private, and your B2B sales + team leadership + awards check those boxes.

On profile enhancement, focus less on adding random certifications and more on sharpening your narrative: clearly show how you’ve driven growth, handled ambiguity, influenced stakeholders, and led change within a structured environment. Your timeline is good, applying with about 4–5 years of experience is perfectly aligned for M7 and INSEAD.

I’d be happy to offer you a free profile review for your target programs to see where you stand and how to boost your chances, happy to help!

You should have a good run with the applications if you can showcase lofty yet realistic career goals. Show that you are passionate about your goal and vision for your family business and have a solid plan to get there (you don't have to lay out this plan in the essays though).
B-schools, including INSEAD have courses specific to students from a family biz background and you should acquaint yourself with these.

Among the areas for improvement - you should retake the GRE with an aim to get 325+. Your current score can give you a serious disadvantage

As you live in the UK, you can consider applying to LBS and Oxbridge as well.

Hi @Sahil Raja
Thanks for sharing your profile

A 3.7 GPA gives you a solid edge in terms of your academic credibility. On the other hand, the 615 GMAT score is significantly below INSEAD’s competitive range which is usually 685+. It’s advisable to retake the exam to break into INSEAD’s competition.

Three years at a Big 4 consulting is a good experience base as this will attest to your analytical thinking, project management, and client handling skills give you have undertaken work associated with these skills.

However, you have not provided much insights into your work that would allow AdComs to assess depth and leadership growth.
- Which specific practice area (Strategy or Risk or Tax or Operations or Technology) of consulting did you work in? Not mentioning this leaves uncertainty about alignment with the stated post-MBA goals.
- Do you have any kind of international exposure or experience working with global teams/projects?
- Can you quantify the impact of you work or provide metrics that sustain your contributions to the firm?

Without this context, the experience will sound as a generic consulting stint and will hurt your application.

Your post-MBA plan to take over your family’s banking and insurance business is a good ambition but you need to articulate how the MBA will directly empower you to scale or modernize the business. Also, how will your pre-MBA work ex support this transition?

Consider providing details about size and scope of the family business. Is this a regional operation, a national chain, a fintech startup, or a legacy firm needing transformation? What position do you intend to hold, (CEO or COO or Strategy Head)? What are the crucial market opportunities that have prompted you to pursue an MBA at this stage? How will INSEAD aid you in propelling your family business?

You need to show that you have a strategic vision of your goals or the AdComs may perceive that you have not fully thought through your MBA plans or how you will leverage the program to accomplish them.

INSEAD is well-regarded for its emphasis on entrepreneurship, global network, and exposure to European and Asian markets so that would be beneficial to your family business. However, you will have to improve your GMAT score and restructure your experiences and goals if you want a solid chance at INSEAD. Also, instead of focusing solely on one program, do consider adding more schools to your list for better chances

We’d love to offer a 1-on-1 profile evaluation to dive deeper into your strengths, discuss more about your portfolio, talk through your fit across schools, and co-create a tailored application game plan!

Hello Sahil,

INSEAD loves global experience and succession stories: your Big 4 background and family business angle tick both boxes.

The 3.7 GPA shows academic strength, but the 615 GMAT Focus is a red flag. At INSEAD, you’re competing with consultants scoring in the 660–700+ Focus range, so a retake is almost essential unless there are extreme circumstances.

The transition to a family business must be backed by a clear vision: what change do you want to drive in insurance or banking?

Utilize your consulting projects to demonstrate your strategic thinking. Let's connect to frame your story and evaluate your options if a retake is possible.

Hi Sahil, thanks for sharing your details. Some thoughts and clarifications:

1. Your work-ex looks interesting given the big-4 brand and international (UK) exposure - assuming you're based in the UK? I'd also like to understand your role(s) better: key functions or domains, any progression/ promotions etc.?

2. Your GPA seems alright, which undergrad university was it from? Your GMAT score is on the lower side for INSEAD, and thus, a retake targeting 675+ would significantly improve your chances.

3. Anything on extracurricular activities?

4. Your post-MBA goal of taking over the family business needs to have a very clear and compelling "why MBA" narrative i.e. is this something you want to do short term, or long term? You will also need to articulate how an INSEAD MBA will equip you with the specific skills and network required for these transitions.

Hope this helps. Feel free to reach out through the links below for a detailed chat.

Hi @Sahil,

Thanks for sharing your profile! With 3 years of Big 4 consulting experience and a strong GPA (3.7/4), you have a solid foundation. Your goal of transitioning into the family business in banking and insurance is credible, especially given your consulting background. Your GMAT Focus score of 615 is on the lower side for top-tier MBA programs. I’d encourage you to retake the GMAT and aim for a 685+ score to strengthen your application and stay competitive.

It will be crucial to build an authentic, compelling narrative. Focus on articulating your goals and career transition plan clearly - make sure your goals are specific and well-defined. Thank you for sharing your background @Sahil Raja! Your profile reflects a good mix of consulting experience and a clear long-term goal tied to taking over and expanding your family business in banking and insurance. After 3 years at a Big 4 consulting firm in the UK, you seem to bring a globally relevant skill set, including strategic thinking, client management, and cross-functional exposure. Particularly at a school like INSEAD, international perspective, leadership potential, and clarity of purpose are highly valued.

Your GPA of 3.7 on a 4.0 scale is a definite strength, demonstrating strong academic performance and your ability to handle rigorous coursework. However, your GMAT Focus score of 615 may fall short of INSEAD's typical competitive range. While INSEAD takes a holistic view, a higher score could boost your application significantly, especially considering your goal of transitioning into finance, a quant-heavy post-MBA domain. If you're able, consider retaking the exam with a targeted prep plan to cross the 675+ mark.

To strengthen your overall candidacy, it’s worth exploring additional programs that cater to individuals with entrepreneurial goals or family business succession plans. IESE (Spain), HEC Paris, and SDA Bocconi all offer rigorous academic training, access to European financial networks, and entrepreneurship support. Oxford Saïd and Cambridge Judge may also be worth considering, given your UK base and focus on innovation-driven leadership. These schools could offer both the credibility and the strategic resources you need to bridge your transition from consulting to financial leadership.

To position yourself for success, we suggest tightening your narrative around how your consulting skills will translate into leadership in finance. Be specific about what you aim to learn from an MBA, whether it’s financial modeling, governance, or navigating regulatory environments, and how those lessons will impact your role post-MBA. Also, think about highlighting any exposure to financial projects, digital strategy, or entrepreneurial ventures within your consulting engagements to show a clear line to your post-MBA goal. You can take a look at this blog on: How to bring collinearity in your post-MBA goals?. You can also take a look at this success story of an applicant from a Family Business Background who got an admit from INSEAD.

If you haven’t yet, it would be helpful to outline how you plan to contribute to INSEAD’s global community, through regional diversity, industry insights, or leadership potential. Finally, if you’d like help crafting your narrative, we’d be happy to guide you. Would love to discuss how your consulting projects have prepared you for the financial sector, or do you want suggestions for building a short-term bridge role post-MBA before taking on the family business?

We’d love to understand more about your journey to provide a more accurate and personalized assessment of your profile. If you'd like, feel free to schedule a profile evaluation session.

Cheers!

Thanks for sharing your profile, @Naxan878! Let's start with your strengths: strong academics: 8.8 GPA, top 10% from an engineering background, and a 328 GRE score, which can be competitive for all your target schools. Clear professional progression: ~4 years as a Product Manager at a large Indian bank. Relevant internships across banking, consulting, and real estate show early exploration. Coherent post-MBA goals: FinTech/Consulting (both very logical given your background)

Potential Concerns: Slightly early-career for European MBAs (not a dealbreaker, but positioning matters), product role in a traditional bank needs to be framed as impact-heavy, not support-oriented. Applying Round 3 at HEC/ISB increases competition risk.

About the schools:
INSEAD- Your 328 GRE score is fine. PM + finance + engineering fits INSEAD’s consulting/fintech outcomes well. Jan intake values candidates who may pivot or return to home markets. Emphasise international mindset, leadership moments, and why INSEAD Jan > Aug.

HEC Paris (Round 3)- Chances can be moderate. R3 is competitive, and HEC tends to prefer 5–7 years of experience. Your essays must show a clear leadership trajectory and why HEC specifically (not “Europe in general”).

ISB (Round 3)- Chances can be moderate–good. PMs from banking backgrounds do well if the impact is clear. ISB R3 is unpredictable but not closed. Strong recommendations + clear post-ISB placement logic are crucial.

NUS values tech + finance hybrids. Your profile fits fintech/product/consulting outcomes well.

What Adcoms want to see: Ownership (not just execution), decision-making authority, and stakeholder influence (business, tech, compliance). If you’ve led product launches, P&L-linked features, or cross-functional teams, highlight those aggressively.

Post-MBA Goals: FinTech vs Consulting
Your goals are credible, but you must pick one as primary per school:
INSEAD/HEC: A consulting-first narrative can work best.

NUS/ISB: FinTech + Product Management narrative resonates more.

Avoid saying “FinTech or Consulting” casually; schools want intentionality, not optionality.

You can also explore other schools like IESE, ESADE, Cambridge Judge, or HKUST.

Questions to refine your positioning:
1) What specific product decisions did you own end-to-end?
2) Did any of your work drive revenue, cost savings, or adoption?
3) Why do you want to leave banking PM for fintech/consulting now?
4) Where do you want to be geographically 3–5 years post-MBA?

We’d love to learn more about your academic background, extracurricular activities, work experience, and personal journey so that we can provide a tailored profile evaluation and an honest school assessment. Feel free to book an evaluation session.

Cheers!

Thanks for sharing your profile, @Aneeta Paul. Starting with your strengths: Exceptional academics: GPA 9.5 (this is elite, especially from India), blue-chip experience: PwC IB + Sattva Consulting (highly respected in impact/health circles), healthcare + impact narrative: increasingly attractive globally, early leadership & recognition: promotions, awards, client-facing ownership and clear long-term commitment to healthcare/pharma (not a casual pivot).

Risk: Experience level at matriculation (~4.5–5 years) for M7 schools like Booth/Columbia. No test score shared yet (this will materially affect your ceiling)

What works well: PwC IB > credible analytical rigor and deal exposure, Sattva → differentiated impact + government/health systems exposure, independent consulting > shows initiative and entrepreneurial thinking, cross-sector credibility (finance + healthcare + public systems). You are not “too niche”, you’re actually well-positioned for: Healthcare consulting, impact investing, health-tech strategy, and public-private healthcare platforms.

Adcoms will want to see: Clear leadership moments (decisions, trade-offs, influence without authority), evidence of people leadership (even informal), and how you moved from “analyst” to “problem owner.”

About the schools:
INSEAD loves profiles like yours: consulting + impact + healthcare and values international exposure, maturity, and clarity.

HEC Paris- Healthcare + finance + consulting is a good combo, slightly younger side, but acceptable, strong academics help a lot. It can be very viable with the right test score.

Oxford Saïd- Excellent fit for healthcare, impact, and systems thinking. Saïd strongly values social impact narratives.

NUS is receptive to healthcare, public systems, and consulting profiles, good Asia exposure + outcomes.

For ESADE, you may even be overqualified if your test score is strong. Good safety/target option.

Booth/Columbia- It's a stretch (but not unrealistic), experience level is the main constraint. You’ll need a top-tier test score, very tight leadership, and impactful storytelling. Booth is slightly more forgiving than HBS/GSB at your experience level.

Areas to strengthen before applying: People leadership, managing teams, mentoring juniors, and influencing stakeholders, international exposure, even short stints, cross-border projects, or global clients, personal story, Why healthcare? Why now? Why business leadership vs policy/NGO?

Questions that will sharpen your essays:
1) What specific healthcare problem do you want to solve long-term?
2) Do you see yourself in private healthcare, health-tech, or health systems financing?
3) What leadership failures or setbacks have shaped you?
4) Where do you want to be geographically post-MBA and why?

We’d love to learn more about your academic background, extracurricular activities, work experience, and personal journey so that we can provide a tailored profile evaluation and an honest school assessment. Feel free to book an evaluation session.

Good ingredients to build a strong candidacy, subject to a very high GMAT/GRE for offsetting the weak GPA. Do ensure you've understood what each school looks for (which is not the same).

Thanks for sharing your profile, @UP12. Your profile shows good breadth (tech + consulting + IB + AI) and promotions. Your candidacy will be decided primarily by: GMAT score, how clearly you reposition from “risk” to “strategy," and leadership depth beyond individual contribution.

About the schools:
Columbia- heavy finance/consulting pipeline, GMAT expectations are high for Indian male consultants.

INSEAD- Values international exposure, consulting, and maturity. Your travel + IB + NGO work fits well.

Kellogg- Consulting-friendly, but leadership & teamwork are critical.

LBS- Likes consulting + finance hybrids. The work experience range fits you well.

MIT Sloan- Tech + analytics fit is good. Looks for innovation and impact, not just pedigree

Try to aim for a 695+ GMAT FE score. Your 3.22 GPA is not fatal; you can offset it by: Tier-1 college, AI/ML honours, promotions + GMAT. 9-month career break, you can frame it as: Family responsibility + real asset project management. Keep it factual, short, and confident; no defensiveness needed.

Key gaps to address:
1) Strategy exposure- You must show client problem framing, business impact, not just controls/compliance and instances where you influenced decisions.
2) People leadership- Hackathons help, but adcoms want mentoring juniors, leading workstreams and driving outcomes without authority

Schools you can explore: Fuqua, Darden, Yale and IESE. Use the next few months to max GMAT, get one clear strategy-heavy project and deepen leadership stories.

Questions that will sharpen your application:
1) Which consulting firms are you targeting post-MBA (MBB / Tier-2)?
2) Any opportunity to move into strategy or transformation internally?
3) Would you consider Europe-first outcomes?
4) Are scholarships important?

We’d love to learn more about your academic background, extracurricular activities, work experience, and personal journey so that we can provide a tailored profile evaluation and an honest school assessment. Feel free to book an evaluation session.

Cheers!

Hey
Priyanka here from ARINGO. Speaking about your profile, your profile looks strong on the surface, with a few areas you’ll want to position carefully. Your 4 years of experience split between Big 4 risk consulting and a Tier-1 investment bank, along with two promotions, shows strong progression and credibility, and the short career break for family real estate project management can be framed positively if you clearly explain ownership, outcomes, and responsibility.

Your Tier-1 engineering background, plus internships at data center companies and Google, aligns very well with your stated tech-strategy consulting goals. The 3.22 GPA is on the lower side for your target schools so your GMAT score will matter. What really helps you stand out is the combination of 35+ hackathon wins, deep international exposure, and hands-on social impact work.

I’d be happy to offer you a free profile review for your target programs to see where you stand and how to boost your chances, happy to help!

Hi UP12,
You have a strong profile, but you will need to play your cards well. All the b-schools you have listed are super competitive and your applications will need to be presented with a tight story and intentionality in your career choices and goals.
Let's begin with academics: Indian institutes do not give out GPA on a 4 point scale and no b-school asks you to convert. So, what is your real GPA? Besides the GPA, you would need a strong GMAT/GRE score as an Indian MBA aspirant. Think if ~705/330 or more target scores. Sometimes, getting the optimum score takes several takes, so I suggest you prep from now and take your first attempt within the next 2 months. If by chance you do not get a great score, you will have the time for retakes before the R1 applications.
The work experience sounds alright, although I will need to see more details here. Adcoms evaluate your achievements and quantified impact, so your resume must show these. The career break is alright as you eventually got back to work after the 9 months. That said, you must address it in the applications. Also, make the family biz experience count by showing how you improved the business and show quantified results to prove this.
Your ECAs are impactful. Continue the work with the NGO and grow it in what way you can over the coming months. Travelling to 25 countries is very impressive. Among your target b-schools, LBS and INSEAD specifically value international experience, but just listing the names of countries you travelled to will not be enough; if you can show what you learned from the experience and how it helped your personal and professional growth- that would be wonderful. 35+ hackathons- haven't so far met other applicants with those many awards.
Your career goals will need further refinement. Moving from a tech role to strategy consulting could be challenging to begin with, but its not an impossible proposition. You will have to think through your story, connect the dots between your relevant experience, transferable skills and the target role at relevant target companies. Also, which kind of consulting companies/ their practice will help you transition to the IT sector in the long term?
I'd be happy to have a chat with you and share more advice on these elements. You can ask for a profile evaluation by filing this form: https://mbadecoder.com/services/free-pr ... valuation/

Each of these programs seeks the Crem-De-La-Crem. As such your GPA of 3.22 will hamper your case. You will need a strong GMAT/GRE, merely to offset that. AND a compelling application to go beyond.

Hope that helps. Please submit your profile for a Free Assessment over a 1:1 call. https://theivyleagueedge.com/index.php/contactus/

HI Jay0924,
Your work experience is very different from the regular MBA aspirants, which could be a good thing. I'd love to know exactly what you do, what role analytics has in your work experience and how you plan to grow on from here into consulting (what are your career goals).
The academic arc looks alright, now you should top this with a 695+ GMAT score.
B-schools usually do not ask for Internships in your application, but what really matters is a well rounded profile - where you have impressive academics, work experience and extra curricular activities. You haven't mentioned about the latter, but it if you don't have much going on, on the extra curricular activities bit, then now is the time until the next 8-10 months to build on this aspect. The college ECAs are helpful, but they will be a little dated by now.
Spend the next couple of months understanding the offerings of all the b-schools mentioned above and you they fit with your needs; pre this list down to about 6-7 which is a good enough number of applications.
Feel free to reach out should you want to have a more detailed discussion

1 year as software engineer -> 1 year as team lead in a fintech startup

1 year as software engineer -> 1 year as team lead at multi national tech company
2 year founding startup, but failed
1 year as software engineer at another multi national tech company

post mba career thinking of consulting or tech (product), but eventually going for entrepreneurship.

Question:
1. What are my chances for top EU and US MBA program? For EU I'm thinking INSEAD/LBS, for US I'm still undecided.
2. my work experience is kinda odd in that whenever I switched company, I shift back into being an IC instead of manager again. Will this hurt my application?

Hi
Priyanka here from ARINGO. Speaking about your profile, your profile looks solid for top European MBAs, especially INSEAD and LBS, and your background actually fits them better than most US programs at this stage. With about 6 years of experience in tech, exposure to both IC and team lead roles, plus founder experience, you already bring what EU schools value.

Your GPA is strong, and your story naturally supports consulting, product, and long-term entrepreneurship. On your second concern, no, moving back to IC roles will not hurt you if explained well. AdComs care less about titles and more about impact, learning, and decision-making. In fact, being hands-on again after leadership roles can be framed as a conscious choice to deepen technical or product expertise, especially in fast-moving tech environments.

What will matter is how clearly you explain why each move made sense and what you gained. Your chances will depend on your GMAT/GRE score, clarity of post-MBA goals, and leadership depth. Focus on positioning your journey as a tech-to-leader-to-founder narrative rather than a linear promotion story.

I’d be happy to offer you a free profile review for your target programs to see where you stand and how to boost your chances, happy to help!
No pressure, no strings - just helpful insights on where you stand and how you can strengthen your chances.

the job time stamps you have given add up to 7 years, unless one of the experiences overlapped.
It sounds like you have gained wholesome experience working at startups, multinationals and as a founder yourself. The failed startup will not be viewed negatively, but do show this as a period of immense learning and applying those learnings into your next job. Past entrepreneurial experience justifies the long term goal of entrepreneurship. Between product management and consulting as career goals, you should try to figure where you skills and interest best align - when the market is tough, you want to be sure that your goals are feasible and can be achieved after MBA. Both paths sound ok, but you will need to get down to the details and figure out the better one, atleast for your MBA applications story.
Yes, you should apply to top European and US b-schools. Fortunately, you have the next 6 months to work on any weak areas of your profile, so make the best use of this. Regarding your job role moving back to software development with every switch- well its possible if you move from a startup to an MNC which has more defined designations and hierarchies. Despite this, show continuous learning, growth in responsibilities and career progression, especially in your resume, You may want to write an optional essay to address this. Also your current job and the growth therein will matter more, so position this well.
You didn't mention anything about current extra curricular activities. perhaps that could be an area to grow?

Thanks for sharing your profile, @DaHomie. It is interesting, but it needs tight positioning. Your experience (6 years, tech + startup) is good, but non-linear, positive diversity factor, career goals, and needs sharper sequencing.

What’s working well:
1. Founder Experience (Even if it failed): This is a major asset, not a liability, especially for European MBAs. Schools like INSEAD and London Business School value: Risk-taking, learning from failure, and entrepreneurial maturity. What matters is what you learned, not the outcome.

2. Technical Depth + Leadership Exposure: Multiple stints as team lead, experience across startup + multinational environments, clear exposure to ambiguity, scaling, and execution. This gives you credibility for consulting, product roles, and entrepreneurship post-MBA.

3. Geographic & Industry Diversity: Indonesian male in tech + startup > underrepresented pool, EU schools, in particular, value this diversity

Risks:
“Resetting” to IC Roles- Will this hurt you? Not if framed correctly. It will hurt if you let admissions interpret it poorly. Right now, your story can sound like, “He couldn’t sustain leadership roles.” You must reframe it as “I chose environments where hands-on execution was required to build depth before scaling again.”

How to position it, emphasize scope, not title, highlight influence without authority, and show why each move made sense for your long-term entrepreneurial arc. INSEAD/LBS cares far more about impact and judgment than clean titles.

Career goals need sharpening. Consulting or Product > Eventually Entrepreneurship. This is too broad for top schools; you need: Short-term (clear): Consulting or Product (pick one per school), Mid-term (logical): Industry/platform exposure, and Long-term (credible): Entrepreneurship (clearly linked to past failure).

Ex: “Post-MBA consulting to build structured problem-solving and exposure to multiple industries, before returning to tech-enabled entrepreneurship in Southeast Asia.”

You can also explore other schools like Darden or Ross.

Do you have a mock score? When are you planning to take the GMAT/GRE?

Round 1 for INSEAD/LBS is strongly preferred for you.

Questions for you:
1) What specifically failed in your startup, product, team, market, or execution?
2) In your IC roles, did you mentor others or influence decisions without authority?
3) Which geography do you want to build your long-term venture in, SEA, India, or global?
4) Who are your recommenders, and can they speak to leadership beyond titles?

We’d love to learn more about your academic background, extracurricular activities, work experience, and personal journey so that we can provide a tailored profile evaluation and an honest school assessment. Feel free to book an evaluation session.

Cheers!

Banking Apprenticeship at Credit Suisse AG

Working Student at the small family food import business
Co-founded a small startup in digital advertising
Internship at a mid sized, renowned boutique in Germany
GPA 5.3 / 6.0 (roughly top 15% at University of St. Gallen)

I'm actually planning to apply to the SIM (Strategy and International Management Master in St. Gallen), but it was not an option so I chose the closest one.

Hey
Priyanka here from ARINGO. Your profile looks strong for St. Gallen SIM. A 695 GMAT FE score is competitive, and a 5.3/6.0 GPA is actually a strong academic signal once put in context. Your background is also nicely differentiated: banking apprenticeship at Credit Suisse, hands-on exposure to a family food import business, a co-founded digital advertising startup, plus consulting exposure through a German boutique, that mix of finance, entrepreneurship, and real-world business fits SIM extremely well.

The key for you will be storytelling: clearly connecting how these experiences shaped your interest in strategy, international management, and eventually CPG. Make sure you explain why SIM specifically, how it fills gaps in your profile, and how it leads logically to your post-degree goals.

I’d be happy to offer you a free profile review for your target programs to see where you stand and how to boost your chances, happy to help!
