Hi

I'm an Indian Male applying to MBA programs this year.

GMAT: 720 (Q49/V40)
GPA: 7.75/10 (Distinction)
Undergrad- B-Tech in Electronics and Communication from NIT Surat
Experience- 42 months currently
7 months, marketing and sales in Zomato (India's leading FnB platform)
22 months, Business Analyst at ZS Associates
13 months- Assistant Manager at upGrad (India's highest online education platform)
Post MBA Goals- Strategy Consulting
Extracurricular- Been involved in educational initiatives, workshops and seminars for 5+ years, counseled more than 5,000 kids across the country. Head of campus press and Convener of the college fest. Opened quizzing clubs in 2 previous organizations and my own city. Active quizzer. National Award winner for creative writing.

Please evaluate my profile for Duke Fuqua.

Hey DS219!

Commencing your profile evaluation, I would say that your academic background is quite strong. Your GPA of 7.75/10 will not only allow you to target Duke but almost each and every other B-school. Moreover, NIT is a prestigious school and its brand name aids in strengthening your profile as Duke tends to favour candidates from top schools of each country. Furthermore, you have mentioned that you scored a 720 in your GMAT which is pretty competitive when compared to your target school.

As far as your work experience is concerned, 3+ years may fall slightly short while targeting an MBA at Duke. This school demands for an average work experience of 4-5 years. However, to cover this up you can always talk about roles and responsibilities you undertook, the teams and projects you led and the impact you created in those positions. This would help you stand in par with your competitors. Also, one thing that is unique in your profile is that you have worked in different niches with Zomato, ZS Associates, and upGrad. You can altogether showcase the unique perspective gained while working at these firms

Moving on, extracurricular participation plays an important role in strengthening your applications as B-schools are on the hunt for all-rounder profiles. Seeing your extra-curricular activities, I’d say you have varied endeavors on this end, which portrays your proactive attitude but since these activities are from the time of your undergraduation,
you need to focus more on the recent ones. In case you don’t have any, it's recommended to work upon the same. You can take up volunteering work at local NGOs or join certain clubs and organizations where you’d be able to make a positive impact by leveraging your leadership and communication skills. Additionally, you can also take up certain courses or certifications in your field of interest to portray how you’re constantly upskilling yourself and chasing growth.

Coming to your school choice, Duke falls under the dream category where you have a good chance of acceptance by 50-60%. To boost your chances of acceptance, you need to ensure that you back your profile with a strong application. An application through its various components such as essays, LORs and SOPs would help you to highlight your strengths and give apt justifications for your weaknesses to smooth over any flaws in your profile. Moreover, the application acts as the window through which the admission committee can peer into your skills, calibre and your personality.

Since the major chances of your admission depend on the quality of your application, you might want to seek professional help to secure your spot in your target schools. You can thus check our, All-in-One, end to end consulting Solution, to gain insights into how we can assist in creating a strong application. We’ve helped thousands of applicants till date and would love for you to be next!

Thank you for posting your profile. Indeed you have a solid GMAT score. I am sure admission experts will soon comment on your profile. I see you have stated Management consulting as your post MBA goal but it would be even better if you could list the names of your target MBA programs. It would help experts provide you precise advice on your chances of getting admission.

Hi mc93,

I have evaluated your profile earlier for Ross and would be happy to do it again for Fuqua. I'm sure I've already summarized the attributes of your profile, here I'm going to evaluate your profile for Fuqua and its key facets on the selection of candidates.

1. Leadership: Fuqua needs a candidate to be of leadership calibre, so you can extensively demonstrate the leadership positions you've undertaken in your previous work and life and how it helped you become a “collaborative leader”.

2. Diverse Personality: Fuqua puts considerable importance on the personality of the candidate, aside from professional and academic credentials. So, your ECs and chess proficiency are living up to Fuqua's standards. In specific, stand up comedy, will make your profile stand out from the pool of applicants. Highlight all of them in Fuqua’s random essay question "interestingly".

3. Impact on the Community: Fuqua has a separate essay question in its application for it, so you must be able to demonstrate the same in your apps thoroughly. Dig the stories from your work-exp, your creative journey, and your life to show how you have made an impact on your community and how your personality has been carved out from those experiences. Also, include how your ability, exp, and expertise can have an impact on the Fuqua community.

4. Clear Vision: You have already specified your post-MBA goals, but when Fuqua says “clarity”, highlight how you are going to bring an impact through your vision in short-term, mid-term and long-term and how Fuqua is contributing to this vision of yours.

Overall, your profile is great and with a GMAT score of 760, you have a good chance for Fuqua when it comes to management consulting as your post-MBA goals. Your only focus should be on connecting the experiential dots in your profile from your work exp to your ECs and your post-MBA goals and weaving and communicating your story with impact.

Also, which intake and round are you eyeing? If you'd like, I'm happy to hop on a call sometime this week to discuss your chances in detail and help you address your concerns. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

I am applying for the class of 2024, so the information provided will match my application at that time.

Background:
White Male (US Citizen)
Age 28
GMAT 760 (Q49, V44)

Industry: Business Planning Analyst at a publicly-traded telecom company.

Education:
B.A. in Economics/Public Policy, 3.4, from a small liberal arts college. I have Cs and two Ds. I plan to explain that I am more mature now than I was in my late teens/early twenties, and I now work hard to succeed even when something is challenging (will relate to WE and Python certificate program that I will mention below).

Work Experience:
Total 5 years (3 years at a back office corporate finance position, previous 2 years at other less senior corporate finance positions at other companies)

Main accomplishments include automating various aspects of my job and improving financial models and decks that go before c-level executives.

Extracurriculars – Stand Up Comedy (took a class and performed at two amateur shows in front of 100+ people), non-credit diploma in Python programming from NYU SPS, chess (played for years, took a break from 2015-2020, but resumed tournaments right before COVID), volunteering at a soup kitchen (just starting, but anticipating close to 80 volunteer hours by Q3-2021). In college, I was the founder and president of the chess club.

Post MBA Goal – Management consultant in NYC.

Ideally, I would also like to get some money from them, but I don't know if that's plausible.

Thanks!

Hi,
Hi @sh1212-- I've worked with many people on successful Fuqua applications and would be glad to review your profile.
Please help in evaluating my profile :

Age : 25 years (Female)

Education :
Chartered Accountant (India)
CFA (Level II cleared) (90th percentile)
Bachelor of Commerce from NM College, Mumbai (Grade A)
Std XII (87%)
Std X (92%)
All this looks good!
Work Experience:

3 years of internship with Deloitte as an Internal Audit Consultant
6 months with Future Group as a Business Innovator
2 years of work ex with Kotak Investments as a Credit/ Monitoring Analyst (Current)

Extra Currics :

Associated with a Rotaract club for a year

Dance (as a hobby)
Your work with Deloitte as an internal audit consultant gives you a strong business foundation. Fuqua will want to know more about what your goals are-- and your backup plan so be sure to do some research on this and make sure your plans are realistic given your background. One thing that helps with Fuqua is taking the time to engage with students so you know how you will engage at Fuqua once you are a student. I've read many of these essays-- and it is very clear from reading these who has put time into this and who has "phoned it in..." You can use the time now to reach out to ambassadors and know what clubs do-- and then think about how you can add some unique value. I also would say that if you really want Fuqua it can be helpful to apply in their Early Decision round so be ready for that as it comes up quickly in Sept. You can also secure an interview without invitation if you look early in late Aug or early Sept to schedule this. While Fuqua is flexible on what test you take-- it can help if you have a high GMAT score when coming from international pool. But I would say that more than many schools Fuqua really does take a holistic approach and that taking the time to be specific in how you can add value to the class can go a long way!
GMAT - yet to attempt (ongoing prep)

THANKS!

Hi hims94,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Well, your undergrad GPA is on the lower side, but you've compensated for it with your GMAT, especially for Fuqua (700+). Talking about work experience, your start-up experience will surely bring you some amazing learning stories. You have shown an immense contribution to the firm that you have worked for, which shows your commitment to your work and excellence in your responsibilities. Your experience with top firms will also add credibility to your candidacy. I'd like to know more about your work experience, leadership skills and career progression, as you’ll need to showcase it in a stark way, it will provide the image of a high performing individual.

Your ECs are fine, but do you pursue any hobbies right now? ECs are not about doing something big, it’s about what are your hobbies and interests, what you just like to do beyond work? So, try to dig deeper and find answers for the same that will show your diverse personality.

Your reasons for a second MBA does make sense and the best part of your profile is that it is very well-connected, the gaps can be filled by the very right experiences that your profile gives. You will need to give plausible reasons for pursuing a second MBA and how an MBA from Fuqua will help you to fill those gaps. Your post-MBA goals are perfectly fine as they will certainly hike your career. If you want to explore the US market, the following are the schools that accept second MBA applicants:
Ross, Sloan, Wharton, Johnson (At Johnson those with an advanced degree are recommended the one-year accelerated MBA program).

Overall you have a good profile, and if you work on your stories you have a decent shot at Fuqua. If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and gauge your fit for the b-schools. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Hi Karthik740! Thank you for sharing your information. I'd be happy to review your profile!
Your academics and GMAT scores are competitive for Fuqua - well done!

Your many years of experience with a top accounting firm gives you a leg up on having a strong foundation in business and around consulting. Fuqua will want to know more about the progression in your career, why a switch to management consulting and how this will progress to your long term goal of private equity. You may also want to be able to articulate a backup plan in the event circumstances change.

Fuqua will want to know how you will be involved as a student with your peers and the community. Use this time to reach out to student ambassadors, alumni, etc. and determine how your past extra curriculars and interest will add value once at Fuqua. Consider applying to in the Early Decision round - this will allow you to secure an interview without invitation. Any way for you to differentiate yourself with your essays, interview and other aspects of the application will help.

You are welcome to schedule a free consultation (link below) with me if you would like to discuss further!
Best of luck,
Shari

You have an awesome profile. It is strong and everything is right.... I think GMAT is your main weakness. You do have more time though if Fuqua is your target school and you are thinking about ED, then it is a bit tighter of a timeframe. You also have an option to potentially take the GRE... did you have to take that for you MS degree?

P.S. You can also see about specifically Fuqua using the WAMC tool.

Thank you for the review. Yes, I did take the GRE for my MS degree but I took it early in my undergrad study and the score is no longer valid. Separately, my score there was a 313 (I do not remember the split).

I’m planning to retake the GMAT in 6 days and am currently expecting to score a 650-680, but am trying to get a feel for “downside risk” of my profile.

My goal schools are H/W/Tuck, but I certainly feel like those are all a stretch with my GMAT performance as it stands today.

I’m curious how much the GMAT will pull me down. I feel like a lot of the other aspects of my profile are pretty strong, but I know the GMAT is kind of a bruise on the profile overall....any thoughts?

Thanks for sharing your profile. Your profile looks good on the surface. Talking about your stats, you have a decent undergrad GPA. I would suggest you retake the GMAT and try to push your GMAT score to 700+ to maximise your chances at Fuqua.

On the work front, your work experience will play a very important role in your candidacy. Fuqua itself believes in bringing the best out of people and thus expects its students too to possess leadership quality. Exhibit the instance where you were in the leadership role, this will put forth leadership attribute in your apps. You will need to dig deeper into your work and find an instance where you have contributed to the organisation’s growth and development and thoroughly explained it in your essays.

Your community experience is great. You should speak about it. I would also recommend you talk about any hobbies you have or things you enjoy doing in your free time, as this would show off your varied personality. B-schools are really interested in knowing the candidate beyond their work. You must showcase the role and responsibilities you had undertaken as VP in different firms and the impact you have created.

Overall you have a good profile. What’s going to matter most in your application is how you connect the experiential dots and build a great story to stand out from other applicants in the pool. If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and gauge your fit for other b-schools. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Got ya. That is a bit below average for the Top programs... you don’t really need to beat the average for the top five, especially if you have a strong profile otherwise. Which I think yours is strong. You can look at the split of the GMAT scores and look at the 80th percentile range. Some programs have quite a bit of latitude but I’m not sure that I would count on that latitude. Even if you have a great score, you are competing with the top 5 or 10% of all applicants for those programs. The rest of your application has to be really outstanding...

Understood - thanks for the information. I'm retaking the exam this upcoming Saturday and, based on practice exams, am expecting to move my score up to a 670 - 680 as my recent practice exam scores have been landing in the 650 - 700 range. If that is the case, I'll likely retest again, but I at least feel more comfortable knowing that I'm in the ballpark with a 670 - 680 as opposed to the pretty horrible score I currently have of a 620.

Thanks again.
