Hi arpit2093
Thanks for sharing your profile and MBA aspirations
My name is Shimri Winters, I head the strategy here at ARINGO

You have a very interesting profile! From what I can see:
Academics - Good undergraduate - solid Bachler degree (GPA sounds high, but I suggest checking what % you are in the class? Better to say “top 15%” than give a GPA, that may sound low to some…)
GMAT - Well, 710 is ok! Not super high (as you do come from a competitive background) but definitely enough for them to look at your applications
Volunteering - Missing some stuff here – any other community work except during college?
Extracurricular activities - Nice hobbies and winning 2nd place in the national competition – well, amazing!
Work Experience - So, you have three very interesting positions for three very interesting firms. You definitely have a lot of material for the essays. For example, in the startup, you can describe how you were helping the startup grow, both in building teams and building together company procedures. I also like the fact you have worked with international clients!

All in all, sounds like you have a solid profile, but I am missing too many details regarding your work experiences to be able to give you a chances estimation.

Your career goals sound totally wrong (I hope you are ok with bluntness). What advantage do you have vs. other candidates who will also mention the generic “consulting” as their career goals? I would change this and connect your goals to the past 5 years of your experience. I don’t know enough about what each company did, but for example, you can use OTT => the way we consume media has and will continue to change, and in this case, you could say your short term career goal would be to be a product manager in a media tech-based company (i.e. Netflix) and long term found your own company in this area… this is just an example of course, but one that connects to your past industry (OTT) and capabilities (Engineering degree, Decision Scientist, Business Analyst)

happy to help further with a detailed review if you send me your CV and any other info to Shimriw@ARINGO.com

GOOD LUCK!

Hello Rachit25,
You have impressive academics and WE. However, what will matter most here is your demonstrated leadership experience and impact you created at work. You should talk about these in your essays and application.
I would want to understand more about your volunteering activities. You need to talk about EC that is recent or any passion that you continued. AdCom want a rounded personality and love to see the social impact you have created beyond your personal development. Most times, applicants do not realize the extent of their extra-curricular initiatives, thinking most of it as mundane.
You have a strong profile for Fuqua. With a better GMAT score, you can also target higher ranked US schools.
Hope this helps.

Hello Rachit25,
The only gaps I see in your profile currently are your GMAT score and volunteering experience. Like I said before, applicants have better EC and volunteering experience than they realize. For instance, some people don’t realize that their musical or dance hobby can be great material for an EC essay. Or, you may have contributed in your own way during the current pandemic (donating and organizing for meals maybe) or to the community in general. You may want to reflect on your life to think about such involvements.
From my experience, AdCom are not looking for any life revolutionizing involvements. They want examples of how you engage with your community. Hope this helps further.

Hello AngadAhuja,

Your acads are strong, though GMAT is a little low for your Fuqua. This coupled with a low WE, may present a challenge. You may want to wait out one more year, which will also give you more time to get a better GMAT score, get more involved in EC and Volunteering. Among your ECs and Volunteering, is anything post-college (may be your work with NGO)?

Hi AP6931
Thanks for sharing your profile and MBA aspirations
My name is Shimri Winters, I head the strategy here at ARINGO

You have a very interesting profile! From what I can see:
Academics - Good undergraduate and nice to do a one-year internship!

GMAT - Well, 710 is ok! Not super high (as you do come from a competitive background) but definitely enough for them to look at your applications

Volunteering – two nice experiences – it shows you really care about the community

Extracurricular activities – playing professionally tennis is wonderful! And the fact that you founded a club, is great (very important to mention this in your essays

Work Experience –This is your biggest strength and your weakness too.
corporate strategy at an automobile market leader – that is an amazing job. Really!
On the downside. You have only been doing this for two years, with (I am assuming?) no promotions, no managerial experience, and no international exposure?

Your career goals sound well connected to your real aspirations and passion (although less connected to your professional and academic experience). This is something you should consider

All in all, sounds like you have a solid profile, but I am missing a few more details on your age and work experience. You would definitely stand a stronger chance if you wait 1-2 years, on the other hand, you are “in the game” this year, and with a strong application, you might just pull it off and get into your dream school!

Happy to help further with a detailed review if you send me your CV and any other info to Shimriw@ARINGO.com

GOOD LUCK!

3) Club Soccer

ajjain12345 hi,
Shimri from ARINGO here
it is hard to give you a profile assessment based on the below as I am missing a lot of info

What I know is:
a. Good undergraduate university
b. Mediocre GPA
c. reasonable GMAT (average for Duke)
d. 2 years work experience (the minimum ... usually not enough)
e. two jobs in two years (raised questions)

What I am missing is
a. Your background/gender / other personal info
b. The companies you worked at, and why you moved
c. The clients you interacted with?
d. Any international experience?
e. Any managerial experience?
f. Extracurricular activities?

Regarding the career goals. again, I am missing some info, but in my eyes, and as a thumb rule, and engineer, with two years of experience at engineering companies, should not say he wants to move to investment banking. Your career goals should be correlated better to your degree and your past work experience. Naturally, I don't have enough info on your profile to assess this better (so I might be wrong, and you might have the perfect reasoning why this career goal fits you).
If you would like a deeper assessment and a chances estimation for Duke and any other school you are looking at, please contact me privately on ShimriW@ARINGO.com with your resume, GMAT split, the school wish list, a timeline of application (R2 this year or are you only applying next year?), and list of questions and we can take it from there
GOOD LUCK!

I feel I have a pretty non-traditional background (at least when compared to the studs I see on this forum) and so I'm not exactly sure how to invest my time in the next 12 months to bolster my application and I would appreciate any feedback/advice.

Why I Want An MBA:

I know this is pretty unoriginal, but my goal is to get into consulting for 3-4 years because I really like how consultants work on a specific project for a few months and then switch assignments. This appeals to me because I don't see myself doing one thing for 20 years and I also would enjoy the travel component. I feel like I'm pretty analytical and so I'd like the challenge of digging into different problems. From there, I would like to found my own creative consulting firm.

Stats:

GMAT: 760 (Q48 V47 IR8) (I studied my @$$ off for this test because I wanted to show that I was ready for the academic rigour of the MBA program and that I really want to get into an MBA program)

CGPA: 9.5/12 (The last 2.5 years my CGPA is perfect and that's because that was when I figured out I wanted to go to bschool and that schools would look at my grades. In Canada, bschools only look at the last 2 years of undergrad, but I know in the US they look at all the years)

Education: Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy (Graduated with High Honours)

Age: 26 years old, 28 at matriculation hopefully

Work Experience:

Suiting: 2 years experience fitting men for suits and luxury brand clothing and providing styling consultation.

Visual Merchandiser: 2 years experience designing and creating visual displays in-house for a well established, very large, higher-end store. Present the brand messaging while taking into account sales, trends and promotions.

Professional Actor: 5 years part-time experience acting in educational settings for the 6 local universities/colleges and councils. Have also starred in various educational videos.

Extracurriculars:

Create art and have an art instagram page. Workout 4X/week (if that counts?). Play chess.

Nationality:

Canadian-born to two immigrant parents escaping war torn Sri Lanka. Both parents are extremely working class and grinders and so I come from humble but proud beginnings and I'm forever grateful to them.

Thoughts?

So yeah, that's my bio so far but I'm planning on applying in the Fall of 2021 so I have 12 months to invest (other than the time spent working full-time) and I'm not exactly sure what to lean into? Should I take hbx core or does my GMAT cover my analytical thinking portion? Should I keep creating art and try to grow my instagram? Should I volunteer somehow in this pandemic? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Hi Thomas18r,

I think your stats are quite great to apply to any business school especially considering the pool of applicants you will be competing against. The major hiccup you are having right now is the direction you should be working for in the next 12 months. For this, first I would say make your post-MBA goals concrete. While I understand your reasons for going into consulting, you need to know for which industry you want to do consulting and second how you define "creative consulting firm". I am suggesting this because your work-experience, which is quite unconventional, is not very straight-forward. So, defining your post-MBA goals better will help you get some experience for those set goals and so a better argument for your goals. Now, other than work, I think you should ask yourself where you want to be involved in. Do you want to help those who need you? Do you want to be more dedicated to your art? Or maybe, you want to use your art or any other of your talents to help others in some way. Best of luck for the next great year and if you'd like we are happy to hop on a call sometime this week to brainstorm more ideas together. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!
