During the first hour of a day, a stationary store sells only $1.50 worth of envelopes, $2.25 worth of pens, and a three-ring binder for $5.25. If the store had $20 in the cash register at the beginning of the day, and the store charges 8 percent sales tax on all purchases, how much money is in the register at the end of the first hour?

A. $29.72
B. $27.92
C. $20.72
D. $9.72
E. $7.92

answer = 20 + 9 * (1 + 8/100) = 20+9 +.72
=29.72

so answer is a)29.72

Total value of items sold during the first hour = 1.5+2.25+5.25 = 9
Sales Tax = 8% so total revenue = 9*1.08 = 9.72
Initial balance = 20

Final balance after 1 hour = 20+9.72 = 29.72

IMO Option A

IMO A

since the store started with $20 and there were no deductions option D($9.72) and E($7.92) are out
the items bought are more than a dollar so option C($20.72) is also out
total cost of items before sales tax = 1.5 + 2.25 + 5.25 = 9
=> total cost > 20 + 9
which only leaves option A

actual cost of all items = 1.5 * (1.08) + 2.25 * 1.08 + 5.25 * 1.08 = 9.72
=> total money by the end of first hour = 20 + 9.72 = 29.72

The answer is A

The Sales at the end of 1st hour is $1.50 + $2.25 + $5.25 = $9
Sales Tax = $9*8/100 = $0.72
Therefore, the Total amount received = $9 + $0.72 = $9.72
The store had $20 in the cash register at the beginning of the day
Therefore, the money in the register at the end of the first hour is = $20 + $9.72 = $29.72

Total = 1.5 +2.25 +5.25 =9

Including taxes, total value = 9*1.08= 9.72
Cash at counter= 20+9.72 = 29.72

So, I think A. :)

IMO:A
Sum of all first hour sales = 1.5+2.25+5.25=9
Adding sales tax of 8% will give the final value of 9.72
Therefore net amount available = 20+9.72 = 29.72

Operation is as follow: 1.5x1.08+2.25x1.08+5.25x1.08
At first glance, that expression is more than 7.92 but less than 20.72. Answer choice D.

Correct Answer A

= 20 + (1.5 + 2.25 + 5.25) + 8% of ( 1.5 + 2.25 + 5.25 )
= 29.72

Money received from Envelope’s sell = 1.50*1.08 (8% sales tax)
Money received from Pen’s sell = 2.25*1.08 (8% sales tax)
Money received from 3 ring binder’s sell = 5.25*1.08 (8%sales tax)

Total money received from the sales above = 1.50*1.08 + 2.25*1.08 + 5.25*1.08
= 1.08(1.50 + 2.25 + 5.25) = 1.08*9 = 9.72
Money in the register at the end of first hour = 20 + 9.72 = 29.72

So the answer will be A

Let the number of envelopes sold be E, the number of pens sold be P, and the number of binders sold be B. Thus, total revenue from the sold objects at the given rates is :

1.5E + 2.25P + 5.25B
With the given tax, total amount: (1.5E + 2.25P + 5.25B)*1.08

For E=P=B=1,
Total amount received: 9.72.

Thus, total cash in the register = 20 + 9.72 = 29.72/-

IMO, OPTION A is the answer.
