Re: GMAT Club Around The World!!! In 2015, sales at Company X were 20% les [#permalink]
In 2015, sales at Company X were 20% less than its sales in 2014. In 2016, sales were 30% greater than sales in 2015. By what percent did company X sales change from 2014 to 2016?

A. 10% decrease
B. 4% increase
C. 5% increase
D. 10% increase
E. 56% increase

Solution -

Let sales in 2014 be 100 units.
20% drop in sales in 2015

2015 sales will be 100 - 20% of 100 = 80 units.
30% increase in sales in 2016.

2016 sales will be 80 + 30% of 80 = 104 units.

Change of sales from 2014 to 2016 is 100 units to 104 units.
4% increase.

Answer should be Option B.

IMO B

let sales, \(S_{2014} = 100 units\)
\(S_{2015} = (1-0.2) * S_{2014} = 80units\)
\(S_{2016} = (1 + 0.3) * S_{2015} = 1.3 * 80 = 104\)
percent change from 2014 to 2016 = \(\frac{S_{2016} - S_{2014} }{ S_{2014}} * 100\)
= \(\frac{104 - 100 }{ 100}\) * 100
= 4% - option B

Let the sales in 2014 be 100,

So sales in
2015 = 100-20 = 80
2016 = 80+24 = 104

So in 2016 sales were 4% higher than that in 2014.

IMO Option B

Correct Answer B

In 2015, sales at Company X were 20% less than its sales in 2014. In 2016, sales were 30% greater than sales in 2015. By what percent did company X sales change from 2014 to 2016?

2014 -------------- 2015 ------------------------------ 2016
x --------------- x (1- 20/100) ------------ x*0.8*(1+30/100) = 1.04x

The sales in 2016 up by 4%.

Re: GMAT Club Around The World!!! In 2015, sales at Company X were 20% les [#permalink]
Let the company X’s sale in 2014 be x
So in 2015 it will be = x*(0.8) (20% less than 2014)
In 2016 it will be = x*(0.8)*(1.30) (30% greater than 2015)
=x*(1.04)
Hence the value is increased by 4%

So the answer will be B

Let the 2014 sales be x.

Then change in 2016 sales from 2014 is: -20 (sales decrease) + 30 (sales increase) - 20*30/100 = +4.

Thus a 4% increase.

IMO option B is the answer.
