IMO the answer must be (B)

As the effectiveness of the reminders increases to a certain extent, all reminders are basically can't go beyond the limit of just sending you notifications.
A better comparison could be looking at the data available with the competitors with the same timeline as that will definitely show the efficiency of the app in question.

A new smartphone app that encourages healthy eating by tracking daily nutrient intake has reported significant user weight loss after six months of use. The developers claim that the app’s reminder system, which prompts users to record their meals and snacks, is the primary reason for this weight loss success (C).
C= Conclusion

Meaning the developers assume that app's reminder system is the cause for the successful weight loss. This is a causal conclusion.

In evaluating the developers' argument, it would be most important to determine which of the following?

(A) Whether users of the app also engage in regular physical exercise apart from using the app

Yes - users of the app also engage in regular physical exercise apart from using the app. Ohh, then this regualr physical exercise could be the reason for the weight loss. (weaken)
No -  users of the app DO NOT engage in regular physical exercise apart from using the app. Then it kind of strengthens the causality by saying that probably this another cause has not led to this effect. (strengthen)

(B) Whether other similar nutritional tracking apps also show similar results in terms of user weight loss
other similar nutritional tracking apps also show similar results in terms of user weight loss, then do we say that other apps have these app's reminder systems? or by stretching could we attribute the weight loss to app's reminder system which we are not even sure if it is the case in other similar nutritional tracking apps.

(C) Whether the users had tried other diet methods before using the app and had not seen similar weight loss results
Whether the users had tried other diet methods before using the app and had not seen similar weight loss results has no bearing on the conclusion. We want to evaluate whether the app's reminder system led to the weight loss success.

(D) Whether the reminders from the app are more effective at altering eating habits compared to other features of the app
      Yes - the reminders from the app are more effective at altering eating habits compared to other features of the app; does altering eating habits lead to weight loss? we don't know;
No - the reminders from the app are NOT more effective at altering eating habits compared to other features of the app; possibly the other features of this app are effective at altering, but we don't know if if this is what led to the weight loss success.

(E) Whether users continue to lose weight or maintain weight loss after the initial six months of using the app
The conditions after the initial six months of using the app has no bearing on the conclusion.

Therefore, the right answer choice is A.

To determine if the primary reason for this weight loss success is the app’s reminder system, we need to evaluate which of the given answers must first be considered.
Option D is the most significant answer because it considers the features that must be evaluated first before concluding that notification is the primary reason.

Determining whether the app users also engage in regular physical exercise apart from using the app (Option A) is important because it addresses the possibility that exercise, rather than the app alone, could be a significant factor in the reported weight loss.

If exercise is a major contributor, it could challenge the developers' claim that the reminder system is the primary reason for the weight loss success.

In evaluating the developers' argument, it would be most important to determine which of the following?

Correct Answer D

(A) Whether users of the app also engage in regular physical exercise apart from using the app
It tells us about overall weight loss, not about reminder system effectiveness.

(B) Whether other similar nutritional tracking apps also show similar results in terms of user weight loss
It tells us a comparison between apps, not the effectiveness of reminder system.

(C) Whether the users had tried other diet methods before using the app and had not seen similar weight loss results
It compares weight loss using apps or other traditional methods.

(D) Whether the reminders from the app are more effective at altering eating habits compared to other features of the app
How other features are assisting in weight loss as compared to reminder system.

(E) Whether users continue to lose weight or maintain weight loss after the initial six months of using the app
It is for the long term impact of the app and the reminder system. Not relevant now.

In a nutshell, A new smartphone app has reported significant user weight loss. The the primary reason for this weight loss success is its app’s reminder system.

Things to consider, app’s reminder system is the primary reason. So, there could be other reasons to help weight loss. In evaluating the developers' argument, "primary reason for this weight loss success is its app’s reminder system", we need a statement that strengthen this argument or weaken the argument.

Now, consider, option (D) Whether the reminders from the app are more effective at altering eating habits compared to other features of the app, answer to this question will certaionly be strengthen the argument or weaken the argument.

Answer D.

Our argument states that people lose weight after 6 months using the app. and the most important feature is the REMINDER. So we need to evaluate this. the correct answer should be related to the REMINDER
A. exercise is not relevant. how is it connected to the REMINDER?
B. similar exercise program is not important same as B.
C. past experience doesn't actually affects this app.
D. CORRECT. Directly hits the REMINDER thing. so it is important.
E. Whether they lose or not after 6 months doesn't have to do with the first 6 months REMINDER.
So correct answer is D.

"The developers claim that the app’s reminder system, which prompts users to record their meals and snacks, is the primary reason for this weight loss success."
Only D out of the given options can directly attack this by answering whether there are other features of the app that are primarily more effective than the reminder feature.

(A) Whether users of the app also engage in regular physical exercise apart from using the app
Yes, than physical exercise may also be the reason for people's weight loss success. Weaken the argument.
No, it is the app which helped people in weight loss. Stregthen the argument.

(B) Whether other similar nutritional tracking apps also show similar results in terms of user weight loss
Other similar apps does not strengthen or weaken the successfull claim of this app for people's weight loss.

(C) Whether the users had tried other diet methods before using the app and had not seen similar weight loss results
What people have tried before using the app is beyond the scope, we are concerned with what they used when they are using the new app.

(D) Whether the reminders from the app are more effective at altering eating habits compared to other features of the app
Argument is about the app's remainder system. Other features of the app are not part of the argument. Also the remainder may be less effective but still people loss weight. This choice does not help to evaluate the argument.

(E) Whether users continue to lose weight or maintain weight loss after the initial six months of using the app
Time period mentioned is" after six months of use of the app". What happens after that we cannot determine based on this.

(A) Whether users of the app also engage in regular physical exercise apart from using the app

This information is useful but does not directly address the effectiveness of the reminder system in altering eating habits, which is the core of the developers' claim.

(B) Whether other similar nutritional tracking apps also show similar results in terms of user weight loss

This comparison with other apps may provide context but does not isolate the impact of the reminder system of this particular app.

(C) Whether the users had tried other diet methods before using the app and had not seen similar weight loss results

While this helps understand the uniqueness of the app's results, it does not specifically evaluate the effectiveness of the reminder system.

(D) Whether the reminders from the app are more effective at altering eating habits compared to other features of the app

This directly addresses the developers' claim by determining if the reminder system is indeed the primary factor influencing users' eating habits and leading to weight loss. This option is crucial for evaluating the argument.

(E) Whether users continue to lose weight or maintain weight loss after the initial six months of using the app

This assesses long-term effectiveness but does not specifically focus on the role of the reminder system in achieving weight loss.

Answer: (D) Whether the reminders from the app are more effective at altering eating habits compared to other features of the app.

In evaluating the developers' argument, it would be most important to determine which of the following?

(A) Whether users of the app also engage in regular physical exercise apart from using the app
Reasoning: This option talks about whether physical exercise plays a role in weight loss, but it doesn't directly evaluate the effectiveness of the app's reminder system in altering eating habits. INCORRECT

(B) Whether other similar nutritional tracking apps also show similar results in terms of user weight loss
Reasoning: This option provides insight into the general effectiveness of nutritional tracking apps, but it doesn't focus on the specific impact of the reminder system in this app. INCORRECT

(C) Whether the users had tried other diet methods before using the app and had not seen similar weight loss results
Reasoning: This option compares different diet methods with the app, but it doesn't specifically examine the effectiveness of the reminder system in the app. INCORRECT

(D) Whether the reminders from the app are more effective at altering eating habits compared to other features of the app
Reasoning: This option directly evaluates the claim by comparing the effectiveness of the reminder system to other features of the app. It specifically addresses whether the reminders are the primary reason for the weight loss success, which is central to the developers' argument. CORRECT

(E) Whether users continue to lose weight or maintain weight loss after the initial six months of using the app
Reasoning: This option is about long-term effectiveness and user behavior, but it doesn't isolate the impact of the reminder system compared to other features of the app. INCORRECT

Option D is the correct answer

To understand what we need for evaluation, we need to dissect the developer’s claim:
Reminder system leads to weight loss; and
Reminder system is the main factor for the app users.

So, in order to validate it, we need to make sure that this app, and specifically its reminder system, is responsible for the success in weight loss, and not any other factors.

Looking at the options, we can get rid of B because the comparison to other apps is irrelevant; and E because it covers the prolonged effect which is not really dealt with by this argument.

Moving on, options A and C are similar, because both of them are referring to other factors that may lead – or may have led – to the weight loss. And indeed, while they would theoretically weaken the argument and help us in evaluating its futility, their impact is not direct enough; plus, it’s difficult to only choose one of those, and there’s only one possible answer. Eliminate.

Eventually, we are left with D, which evaluates not exactly the weight loss success part, but rather the attribution of this success to the reminder system. It’s in line with the developer’s conclusion and hence looks like our answer.
Therefore, D is the right answer.

The conclusion is "The developers claim that the app’s reminder system, which prompts users to record their meals and snacks, is the primary reason for this weight loss success."
To evaluate the argument, we need an option which when taken to extremes can strengthen and weaken the argument. Only option D does that since -
When the answer to that option is a no, we conclusion is weakened and the reminder option is not the primary reason for weight loss success. But when the answer to that option is yes, the conclusion is strengthened. Hence, D

A) is wrong because when taken to extremes, we get - yes, they exercise regularly and no, they don't exercise regularly. Both of which help in evaluating for the application but not for the reminder feature
B, C and E are out of scope - nothing about other apps is talked about, there is no comparison between before & after which affects the argument or the conclusion, and what happens after 6 months has nothing to do with the conclusion.
