At the end of the year, a company had exactly 120 employees working in three departments: Marketing, Finance, and Operations, with each employee working in exactly one of the three departments.

Exactly 30% of these employees were in the Marketing department.
Of the remaining employees, the number in Finance was twice the number in Operations.

At the beginning of the next year, the company decided to lay off a total of 28 employees from these three departments, with twice as many laid off from Marketing as from Finance, and half as many from Operations as from Finance.

Select for Finance and Operations the number of employees who work in the Finance and Operations departments, respectively, after the layoffs. Make only two selections, one in each column.
Exactly 30% of these employees were in the Marketing department = 0.3 * 120 = 36

Remaining Employee = 120 - 36 = 84

Of the remaining employees, the number in Finance was twice the number in Operations: 2x + x = 84; x = 24; Finance = 48; Operations = 24;

At the beginning of the next year, the company decided to lay off a total of 28 employees from these three departments, with twice as many laid off from Marketing as from Finance, and half as many from Operations as from Finance.
2y + y + 0.5y = 28; 3.5y = 28; y = 8;

Finance Remaining = 48 - 8 =40
Operations = 24 - 4 = 20

Answer: Finance = 48, Operations = 24.

Side note: Please check if you missed the layoff calculation that's needed to answer the question.

Before layoff
In total, there are 120 Employees.
  • (1) In Marketing, we have 30% = 0.3 * 120 = 36 employees. (M = 36)
  • (2) In Finance, we have that, for the remaining employees, "the number in Finance was twice the number in Operations".
    • F = 2O
    • Remaining employees = 120 - 36 = 84 employees
  • (3) In Operations, we have O
To resolve (2) and (3), we combine them: F + O = 84. That is the equivalent to say 2O + O = 84. In other words, 3O = 84. Therefore O = 28. And F = 2O = 56.

After layoff
So, before the layoff we have: M = 36, O = 24 and F = 48.
  • (I) We know that will be a "lay off a total of 28 employees" (-28)
  • (II) We have this relationship: "with twice as many laid off from Marketing as from Finance" (M': -2x | F' : -x)
  • (III) The layoff relationship continues: "and half as many from Operations as from Finance: (O' : -x/2 | F' : -x)

To find x, we combine (I), (II) and (III) in the following equation:
\(-x/2 - x - 2x = -28\)
\(-7x/2 = -28\)
\(-x/2 = -4\)
\(x = 8 \)

Therefore,
  • Finance: F' = 56 - x = 56 - 8 = 48. (F' = 48)
  • Operations: O' = 28 - x/2 = 28 - 4 = 24. (O' = 24)

30% of 120 = 36, so m = 36. Remaining is 120 -36, i.e 84. Finance is twice the operations, f= 2x, op = x. So 84 = 2x + x. x = 28. So, f = 56. op = 28, m =36.
Now 28 is laid off, we'll go from last sentence to accomodate correctly.
Half as many from operations as from finance. i.e y from operations mean, 2y from finance.
Twice as many from marketing as from finance means, marketing lost 2*2y, ie. 4y. So totally 7y were laid off. So y = 4.

Finance = 56 - 2y = 48.
Operations = 28 - y = 24.

Select for Finance and Operations the number of employees who work in the Finance and Operations departments, respectively, after the layoffs. Make only two selections, one in each column.
Initial Setup (End of the Year)
  • Total employees: 120
  • Departments: Marketing, Finance, Operations
  • Each employee is in exactly one department.
1. Marketing Department
  • Exactly 30% of employees are in Marketing.
  • Calculation:
    30% of 120=0.30×120=36 employees in Marketing.
2. Remaining Employees (Finance + Operations)
  • Total employees not in Marketing:
    120−36=84 employees.
  • These 84 are split between Finance and Operations.
  • Given: The number in Finance is twice the number in Operations.
Let’s denote:
  • Operations=x
  • Finance=2x
So:
x+2x=84

3x=84
x=28
Thus:

  • Operations: 28 employees
  • Finance: 2×28=56 employees
Initial Distribution:
  • Marketing: 36
  • Finance: 56
  • Operations: 28
Layoffs (Beginning of Next Year)
  • Total layoffs: 28 employees
  • Layoffs are distributed as:

    • Twice as many from Marketing as from Finance.
    • Half as many from Operations as from Finance.
Let’s denote:
  • Layoffs from Finance=F
  • Then:

    • Layoffs from Marketing=2F
    • Layoffs from Operations=F/2
Total layoffs:
2F+F+F/2=28

Combine terms:
3F+0.5F=28
F=8
So:

  • Layoffs from Finance: 8
  • Layoffs from Marketing: 2×8=16
  • Layoffs from Operations: 8/2=4

Post-Layoff Counts

Now, subtract layoffs from initial counts:

  1. Marketing:
    36−16=20(but we don’t need this for the answer).
  2. Finance:
    56−8=48
  3. Operations:
    28−4=24
Final Answer
From the given options:

  • Finance after layoffs: 48
  • Operations after layoffs: 24
Selections:
  • Finance: 48
  • Operations: 24

Select for Finance and Operations the number of employees who work in the Finance and Operations departments, respectively, after the layoffs. Make only two selections, one in each column.
We need to first find original number of people in each department. Marketing is 120*30% or 36. Finance is 2x operations, so 3x is = 120-36 or 84. so x = 28 which means operations is 28 and finance is 56. Add up to verify, 36+28+56=120. Next we move to layoffs. this is a great chance to use ratios. So M : F is 2 : 1 and F : O 2:1. We need all of them to be even so we need to use finance as a common number so M : F : O is 4:2:1. Those added =7. 28/7 is 4 groups. so times that for each of the ratios and we get 16 in marketing 8 in finance and 4 in Operation. We just subtract from original so finance 56-8 so 48 and for operations 28-4= 24 done.

Total employees = 120

Employees are in Marketing, Finance, and Operations

🔹 Step 1: Find number of employees in each department before layoffs

“Exactly 30% of these employees were in the Marketing department”

\text{Marketing} = 30\% \text{ of } 120 = 0.3 \times 120 = 36

So remaining employees (Finance + Operations):

120 - 36 = 84

“Of the remaining employees, the number in Finance was twice the number in Operations”

Let’s say Operations = x
Then Finance = 2x

So:
x + 2x = 84 \Rightarrow 3x = 84 \Rightarrow x = 28

✅ Before layoffs:
• Marketing = 36
• Operations = 28
• Finance = 56

🔹 Step 2: Apply the layoffs

“The company decided to lay off 28 employees in total”

“Twice as many laid off from Marketing as from Finance, and half as many from Operations as from Finance”

Let the number laid off from Finance = x

Then:
• Marketing: 2x
• Operations: x/2

Total layoffs:
x + 2x + \frac{x}{2} = 28
\Rightarrow 3x + \frac{x}{2} = 28
\Rightarrow \frac{6x + x}{2} = 28
\Rightarrow \frac{7x}{2} = 28
\Rightarrow 7x = 56
\Rightarrow x = 8

✅ Layoffs:
• Finance: 8
• Marketing: 16
• Operations: 4

🔹 Step 3: Final count after layoffs
• Finance: 56 - 8 = 48
• Operations: 28 - 4 = 24
