Option E is the only choice that doesn’t undermine the frequency inference hence knowing that Schwartz residents spend less time per gym visit says nothing about how often they go. So it doesn’t weaken the claim that they exercise more frequently. By contrast:
A) If Schwartz simply has more people, its higher number of memberships could reflect population size rather than greater visit frequency.
B) If Talsberg residents buy gym memberships in Schwartz, Schwartz’s totals are inflated by outsiders, not by more frequent use by its own citizens.
C) Lower membership prices in Schwartz could drive up sign‐ups without indicating more frequent workouts.
D) A free community gym in Talsberg means its citizens may exercise frequently without holding paid memberships, so their lower membership count doesn’t imply they exercise less often.

Bunuel
More gym memberships are bought in the town of Schwartz than in the town of Talsberg. Therefore, the citizens of Schwartz exercise more frequently than do the citizens of Talsberg.

Each of the following, if true, weakens the conclusion above EXCEPT:

A. Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg does.
B. Most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships in gyms there.
C. The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg.
D. A large, free community gym open to all is available to the citizens of Talsberg.
E. The average citizen of Schwartz spends less time at the gym per week than does the average citizen of Talsberg.

A. Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg does.
Weakens the conclusion because per capita, exercise might be the same or less.

B. Most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships in gyms there.
Weakens the conclusion because Schwartz’s high membership numbers might not reflect its own citizens’ exercise habits.

C. The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg.
This does not weaken the conclusion because it doesn’t challenge the link between memberships and exercise. It just explains why more memberships are sold (lower price), but doesn’t suggest people exercise less.

D. A large, free community gym open to all is available to the citizens of Talsberg.
Weakens the conclusion because Talsberg citizens could be exercising just as much without buying memberships.

E. The average citizen of Schwartz spends less time at the gym per week than does the average citizen of Talsberg.
Weakens the conclusion because directly contradicts the idea that Schwartz exercises more.

Premise: More gym memberships in Schwartz than of Talsberg.
Conclusion: Citizens of Schwartz exercise more than those of Talsberg do

To weaken the conclusion, need to break the link: More gym membership at Schwartz doesn't mean more people exercising at Schwartz than Talsberg.

Analyze and eliminate any answer that WEAKENS the conclusion:

A. Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg does.
=> More population in Schwartz but mentioned nothing about gym memberships or exercising frequency. DOES NOT WEAKEN.

B. Most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships in gyms there.
==> This explains part of gym membership at Schwartz actually belongs to Talsberg; and citizens of Talsberg can still work out as much as Schwartz. WEAKENS.

C. The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg.
=> People in Schwartz join gym memberships because of affordability and not necessarily will exercise more. WEAKENS.

D. A large, free community gym open to all is available to the citizens of Talsberg.
=> People in Talsberg have options to exercise without having to buy gym membership. There must be a lot more people work out in Talsberg than the author's conclusion. WEAKENS.

E. The average citizen of Schwartz spends less time at the gym per week than does the average citizen of Talsberg.
=> This shows citizens of Schwartz does not exercise as much as or less than Talsberg. Opposite of Conclusion. WEAKENS.

More gym memberships are bought in Schwartz than in Talsberg.

Conclusion:
Therefore, citizens of Schwartz exercise more frequently than citizens of Talsberg.

We are asked to identify the one option that does NOT weaken the conclusion - an option that either supports the conclusion or is neutral.

A. Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg does.

If Schwartz has more people, it makes sense that more memberships are sold, and this doesn’t challenge the conclusion that they exercise more.
Correct option as it does NOT weaken.

B. Most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships in gyms there- This suggests many Talsberg residents are counted in Schwartz’s gym membership numbers, weakening the link between Schwartz memberships and Schwartz citizens’ exercise habits.

C. The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg- Lower prices may explain why more memberships are sold in Schwartz without implying greater actual gym use, weakening the conclusion.

D. A large, free community gym open to all is available to the citizens of Talsberg - This suggests Talsberg residents may exercise frequently without needing to purchase gym memberships, weakening the argument.

E. The average citizen of Schwartz spends less time at the gym per week than does the average citizen of Talsberg- If Schwartz citizens spend less time exercising, the conclusion that they exercise more frequently is directly undermined.

Answer: A
Only option A does not weaken the conclusion and is therefore the correct answer.

The argument assumes that more gym memberships mean people exercise more. But this can be misleading if other factors are involved. For example, if Talsberg has a free gym (D) or if people from Talsberg buy memberships in Schwartz (B), then the membership numbers don’t reflect actual exercise habits. Option C, however, just says gym memberships are cheaper in Schwartz—it explains why more are bought but doesn’t challenge whether people actually exercise more. So C doesn’t weaken the conclusion. That makes it the correct answer.

A. It clearly supports the statement unlike other options which actually weakens it.

For Example :
B weakens, as statement want to let us know that citizen of S exercise more which is why memberships are sold more. But B tells us people travel from T to S which weakens the statement.
C again weakens as it tells us that price is low due to which more membership are sold and not that the citizen exercise more frequently.

A. Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg does.
More memberships could just mean more people, not that each person exercises more. Weakens.

B. Most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships in gyms there.
Schwartz's high membership numbers might include non-residents, so they don't show Schwartz's actual exercise habits. Weakens

C. The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg.
More people might buy memberships because they're affordable, but this doesn't say whether they actually exercise more or less. Does not weaken.

D. A large, free community gym open to all is available to the citizens of Talsberg.
Talsberg citizens might exercise just as much (or more) without buying memberships, so Schwartz's higher sales don't prove they exercise more. Weakens.

E. The average citizen of Schwartz spends less time at the gym per week than does the average citizen of Talsberg.
Even with more memberships, Schwartz citizens might exercise less. Weakens

Correct answer is C

Answer is C.

I applied pre-thinking, and the first thing that popped was, what is Schwartz has a higher population.

A -> weakens the argument . We're told the absolute number of gym memberships in Schwartz was higher, not %

B -> if people from Talsberg go to Schwartz to gym, it weakens the conclusion that Schwartz people exercise more frequently

C -> Price could be a reason why Schwartz has more gym memberships. It does not weaken the conclusion.

D -> This implies, people in Talsberg could be exercising frequently even without going to the gym. Weakens the conclusion

E -> Though it does not say anything about how many times ( frequency ) do people go to the gym, if true it does make the conclusion more believable.

Hence the answer is C

C. The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg.

This does not weaken the argument.
Conclusion: Citizens of Schwartz exercise more frequently that citizens of Talsberg.
Premise: More gym membership are bought in Schwartz.

A. Weakens the argument: If Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg, automatically more people will have gym memberships. This does not mean all members are working out.
B. Weakens the argument: If most citizens of T have gym memberships in S, then it's also the citizens of T who workout there.
C. Does not weaken the argument: The fact that the gym memberships are costly in T doesn't have anything to do with the frequency of exercise.
D. Weakens the argument: By having a free community gym open to all, citizens of T don't have to pay for subscriptions. It doesn't mean they're not working out more.
E. Weakens the argument: If the citizens of S spend less time that citizens of T, the frequency of exercise must be less.

Conclusion:
Therefore, citizens of Schwartz exercise more frequently than citizens of Talsberg.

Tasked with identifying the the option that does not weaken the conclusion

A. Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg does.

If Schwartz has more people, more memberships doesn't necessarily mean individuals exercise more...it could just be a population effect. Therfore out.

B. Most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships in gyms there.

This indicates that many of the gym memberships bought in Schwartz are used by the folks from Talsberg, therefore weakening our conclusion. Thus out

C. The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg
This suggests that the lower price gives an alternative explanation for the higher number of memberships.

I did feel that I was overreaching a bit with this, but since it is a weakening question, I thought to consider this one because though C doesn’t disprove the conclusion, it undermines the reasoning by suggesting another cause for the observed data (i.e., more memberships due to price, not exercise)
Out

D. A large, free community gym open to all is available to the citizens of Talsberg.
Folks in Talsberg may exercise without buying memberships. Talsberg's citizens are smort...nice
So, lower membership purchases wouldn't mean they exercise less. Out

E. The average citizen of Schwartz spends less time at the gym per week than does the average citizen of Talsberg.
Now notice how the conclusion is talking about frequency of exercise, so even if the average time is less, the frequency of the citizens exercising can still be higher in Schwartz.
Thus not weakening our conclusion. Keep

A. Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg does.
If Schwartz is bigger, more memberships could just mean more people, not more exercise per person. This weakens the argument.

B. Most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships in gyms there.
Many memberships might belong to people who don't even live in Schwartz. This weakens the argument.

C. The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg.
Lower prices might lead to more sales, but does this affect how much people exercise. This doesn not weaken the argument.

D. A large, free community gym open to all is available to the citizens of Talsberg.
Talsberg residents might exercise just as much without paying for memberships. This weakens the argument.

E. The average citizen of Schwartz spends less time at the gym per week than does the average citizen of Talsberg.
Even with more memberships, Schwartz residents might actually exercise less at the gym. This weakens the argument.

The right answer is C

A. Larger population of S gives us an alternate reason of why there are more gym memberships in S. So higher frequency of exercise might not be the consequence of more interest in exercise and both cities might have the same frequency. Weakens.

B. This tells us that in reality, T might have more people who have gym memberships and thus exercise frequently since they visit the gyms in S leading to more memberships in S. Weakens.

C. This is a bit tricky since it does not directly weaken. It does, however, provide us with a reason to believe that the higher number of memberships is due to convenience of low price and not because of interest. We keep this around for now but it does not seem promising. Somewhat weakens.

D. The free gym in T might be the reason for low memberships in T. Meaning despite the low membership, T might have more people who exercise frequently which can offset the higher memberships in S. Weakens.

E. We are talking about the frequency (number of times people exercise) and not the amount of time they do. So this does not weaken the argument.

ChoiceDoes it weaken?
A. Larger population in SchwartzYes. More people naturally means more memberships even if each person exercises just as often as in Talsberg.
B. Talsberg citizens buy their gym memberships in SchwartzYes. The higher membership total recorded in Schwartz partly belongs to Talsberg residents, so it tells us little about Schwartz citizens’ habits.
C. Memberships cost less in SchwartzYes. A lower price can inflate sales without implying people go to the gym more often.
D. Free community gym in TalsbergYes. Talsberg residents can work out frequently without purchasing memberships, so membership totals understate their exercise.
E. Schwartz citizens spend less total time at the gym per weekNo. Less total time does not contradict the claim that they go more often—they might take shorter, more frequent sessions (e.g., four 20-minute visits versus two 60-minute visits). Thus it fails to weaken the conclusion.

The conclusion is that because more gym memberships are bought in Schwartz than in Talsberg, citizens of Schwartz exercise more frequently. We are asked to find the option that does not weaken this conclusion.

Option A says Schwartz has a larger population. This supports the idea that more gym memberships may be due to more people, not more exercise per person. It explains the data but does not weaken the conclusion directly. This is the correct answer.

Option B says most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships there. This means the gym membership numbers in Schwartz include people from Talsberg, so it weakens the conclusion.

Option C says the average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz. That could lead to more memberships without implying more actual gym use. It weakens the conclusion.

Option D says Talsberg has a large free community gym. That means fewer paid memberships but possibly equal or more exercise, weakening the conclusion.

Option E says the average Schwartz citizen spends less time at the gym than the average Talsberg citizen. This directly contradicts the conclusion and weakens it.

Answer is A.

Quote:
Answer : E
The conclusion is since more gym memberships are bought therefore Citizens of Schwartz exercise more than citizens of Talsberg.
We need to find the option that does not weaken that means is neutral or strengthens the conclusion.

A : Weakens.
Since population of Schwartz is more, hence more memberships are bought. No relation w.r.t citizens exercising more frequently. Alternate Reasoning found -- hence weakens.
B: Weakens.
Not because the citizens of Schwartz exercise more frequently, but because most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships in gyms there. Alternate Reasoning found -- hence weakens.
C: Weakens
Average price of gym membership is lowe - Alternate Reasoning found -- hence weakens.
D: Weakens
Free community gym found. Hence less memberships. Alternate Reasoning found -- hence weakens.
E: Time at gym per week data does not aim the conclusion nor gives any needed info - Neutral. Hence E is the option.
