A. Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg does.

This supports the idea that Schwartz may sell more gym memberships, without implying anything about the frequency of exercise among individuals. It may help explain the difference in membership numbers but does not directly weaken the conclusion. This is likely the correct answer. Keep it.

B. Most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships in gyms there.

This weakens the argument directly, as it suggests that many of the gym memberships purchased in Schwartz may actually belong to Talsberg residents rather than Schwartz citizens. Eliminate.

C. The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg.

If gym memberships are cheaper in Schwartz, more people might be inclined to purchase them without necessarily using them more frequently. This undermines the assumption that more memberships indicate more exercise. Eliminate.

D. A large, free community gym open to all is available to the citizens of Talsberg.

If Talsberg residents have access to a free gym, they may exercise without needing to purchase gym memberships. This would weaken the comparison based on membership numbers. Eliminate.

E. The average citizen of Schwartz spends less time at the gym per week than does the average citizen of Talsberg.

Even if Schwartz has more gym memberships, this fact would indicate that Schwartz citizens use them less frequently. This directly weakens the conclusion. Eliminate.

Final Answer: A. Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg does.

  • More population in Schwartz explains more memberships without implying higher frequency - weakens
  • Talsberg citizens using Schwartz gyms shows memberships aren’t tied to Schwartz residents - weakens
  • Cheaper memberships in Schwartz may lead to more sign-ups without more exercise - weakens
  • A free gym in Talsberg explains fewer paid memberships there - weakens
  • Schwartz citizens spend less time at the gym - this doesn’t weaken the conclusion about frequency, since shorter sessions can still be more frequent. So, it does not weaken the argument

A - Larger population means more memberships are bought, not necessarily that exercising more per citizen - weakens
B - If citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have gym memberships there then it is skewing the numbers for Schwartz citizens when in reality its actually Talsberg - weakens
C - If the prices is lower or higher it doesn't really matter, it doesn't weaken the argument, it COULD potentially strengthen it but really it's not direct - keep
D - Large community gym would mean that they could exercise just as much but it doesn't reflect in purchased memberships because they don't need to purchase one - weakens
E - More gym memberships are bought HOWEVER they are not exercising more frequently, just holders of a membership - weakens

The correct answer is C
Bunuel
More gym memberships are bought in the town of Schwartz than in the town of Talsberg. Therefore, the citizens of Schwartz exercise more frequently than do the citizens of Talsberg.

Each of the following, if true, weakens the conclusion above EXCEPT:

A. Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg does.
B. Most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships in gyms there.
C. The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg.
D. A large, free community gym open to all is available to the citizens of Talsberg.
E. The average citizen of Schwartz spends less time at the gym per week than does the average citizen of Talsberg.

Gym Membership, S>T. Therefore, S citizens exercise more frequently than T citizens.

Each of the following, if true, weakens the conclusion above EXCEPT:

A. Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg does.
The population is not equal in both countries, that might be the reason for more memberships in S...... ..... could be the answer
B. Most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships in gyms there.......Maybe T exercise more frequently than S citizens because most citizens of T have membership in S.......No
C. The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg....Thats why more people bought membership but doesn’t mean they exercise more frequently......No
D. A large, free community gym open to all is available to the citizens of Talsberg.... So they don’t buy membership but maybe exercise more......No
E. The average citizen of Schwartz spends less time at the gym per week than does the average citizen of Talsberg.....Means T citizen exercise more frequently.......No

Maybe the answer is A? Not sure

The question states people of Schwartz has more membership than Talsberg and therefore people of schwartz exercise more frequently than people of Talsberg.

The question wants to find statement which weakens the conclusion that people of schwartz exercise more frequently than people of Talsberg.

Lets analyze the options

A. Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg does.
Population is irrelevant for frequency of exercise. Eliminate
B. Most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships in gyms there.
This suggest people of Talsberg has more membership but that doesn't mean people of Talsberg will be more frequent. Eliminate.
C. The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg.
This supports that more people can have gym membership at schwartz but again limited information towards frequency of exercise. Eliminate
D. A large, free community gym open to all is available to the citizens of Talsberg.
This suggest that Gym has accessibility for more no of people at Talsberg but doesn't mean it will lead to frequent exercise of people at Talsberg. Eliminate
E. The average citizen of Schwartz spends less time at the gym per week than does the average citizen of Talsberg.
This option suggest people at schwartz spend less time at gym than people of Talsberg and therefore it weakens the conclusion that people of schwartz exercise more frequently than people of Talsberg.

Option E is the correct answer.

A) incorrect: weakens -> more gym memberships in S because more people
B) incorrect: weakens ->more gym memberships in S because citizens of T also buy them in S
C) correct: strengthens. If the average price is cheaper, then it is more affordable. The Q isn't about affordability but it still strengthens the conclusion because if more people can afford the membership, then higher membership numbers would suggest more people doing exercise.
D) incorrect: weakens -> more gym memberships purchased in S because you don't need to purchase on in T
E) incorrect: does nothing really -> conclusion isn't concerned about time spent in gym but number of people in gym

Obviously this weakens it! More people = more memberships sold, even if less people actually exercise. Like how big cities sell more pizza than small towns but doesn't mean each person eats more pizza.

B
Really messes up the argument here. Talsberg people buying gym membships in Schwartz means the numbers don't realy show who exercises more. Schwartz numbers get inflated by outsiders working there.

C
This definately weakens it. Cheaper prices = more people buy memberships just cause they can afford it, not because their more into fitness. Like buying sale stuff you never use.

D
Weakens the argument for sure. Why would Talsberg people buy expensive memberships when theres a free gym? They could be exercising way more at the free place while Schwartz people have to pay.

E (Correct)
It doesn't weaken the reasoning, it just says the conclusion is wrong. The logic about memberships = more exercise still holds, this just gives evidence against it."

A. Weakens, because it provides another reason for more number of gym memberships in Schwartz. Hence Not the answer

B. Weakens, provides reason for increase in membership of gym in Schwartz but people are of Talsberg, so these people could be more frequent. Hence Not the answer

C. Weakens, another reason for increase in membership in Schwartz but no mention of

D. Weakens, due to no need to buy membership, no record, but people of Talsberg could be exercising more.

E. Ambiguous, Number of hours doesn't define frequency of gym. Hence the Answer.

A. Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg does.

Weakens the conclusion because Schwartz having more people offers an alternative explanation for why more gym memberships are bought there.

B. Most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships in gyms there.

Weakens because people from Talsberg buying memberships in Schwartz instead of Talsberg offers an alternative explanation for why more gym memberships are bought there.

C. The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg.

Weakens because the lower price offers an alternative explanation for why more gym memberships are bought in Schwartz.

D. A large, free community gym open to all is available to the citizens of Talsberg.

Weakens because the citizens of Talsberg having a free gym offers an alternative explanation for why more gym memberships are bought in Schwartz where there is no free gym option
.
E. The average citizen of Schwartz spends less time at the gym per week than does the average citizen of Talsberg.

Does not weaken. It does not offer an alternative explanation and does not describe which country's citizens exercise more frequently.

Answer: E

Explanation: The conclusion claims Schwartz citizens exercise more frequently due to more gym memberships.

Options A-D weaken this by suggesting Schwartz citizens may not exercise more (A: larger population; C: cheaper memberships) or Talsberg citizens exercise more (B: Talsberg citizens use Schwartz gyms; D: Talsberg’s free gym).

E (Schwartz citizens spend less gym time) doesn’t clearly refute exercise frequency, as shorter but more frequent visits are possible, making it the exception.

It might be the reason, but if anything, it explains why Schwartz people get more exercise.

A- incorrect - if population in schwartz (lets say 100) is more than town of talsberg(lets say 10). 50 people of schwartz has joined gym but 9 people from talsberg har joined the gym and 50 people from shwartz who have not joined the gym are not working out regularly. This weakens the conclusion that people of shwartz excercise more regularly than people of talsberg

B- incorrect- if people of talsberg have taken membership in shwartz then even if number of membership is higher in shwartz but people of shwart, might not exercise as rehlgularly as people of talsberg
C- this might explain why more people inshwartz have joined gym but it is not imacting conclusion KEEP THIS OPTION
D- INCORRECT- since gym is free fo people of talsberg they can exercise regularly wothout paying joining fees. Hence weaken the conclusion
E-incorrect - since average of shwartz citizen spends liss time in gym/week that talsberg we can say people of shwartz might not be working out on gym as regularly as people of talsberg. Hence it weakens the conclusion.

Since it is an weaken except question answer is C

A. Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg does.

WEAKENS : More population could indicate more membership.

B. Most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships in gyms there.

WEAKENS: This indicates that the membership data could be flawed as many citizens of Talsberg have membership in Schwartz.

C. The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg.

Cost has no factor in here. The cost can be lower, however that doesn't indicate that the citizens of Schwartz exercise more frequently than do the citizens of Talsberg.

D. A large, free community gym open to all is available to the citizens of Talsberg.

WEAKENS: The citizens of Talsberg could be using the free gym. Hence, we can eliminate D.

E. The average citizen of Schwartz spends less time at the gym per week than does the average citizen of Talsberg.

WEAKENS: If the membership sold is more and the time spend is less, this indicates that the citizens don't exercise more frequently.

Option C

The conclusion is that more citizens of S exercise more frequently than citizens of T. This is supported by the premise that more gym memberships are bought in S than in T.

Find an answer that cast doubt on the argument that logically connects to the premise and conclusion.

A. Population has nothing to do with premise and conclusion (even if S has a larger population, the conclusion holds)

B. This will cast doubt that more citizens of S exercise more frequently than citizens of T; People of T buy memberships in S, which increases the amount of memberships bought there. More people from T probably exercise more than more from S (WEAKEN)

C. Even if average price is lower, we don't know if that prevents people from exercising.

D. Unrelated to the premise

E. Unrelated to premise and conclusion.

Option D is the answer.
The conclusion is therefore, the citizens of Schwartz exercise more frequently than do the citizens of Talsberg.
We need to find out the option which does not weaken.
Option A weakens as Schwartz has larger population , it has more no. of gym membership. Citizens there do not exercise more frequently.
Option B also weakens as it shows that citizens of Talsberg exercise more frequently instead.
Option C also weakens showing another alternate reason as to why gym membership in Schwartz is higher.
Option D does not weaken . Just because the gym is available , does not mean it is used by more people in Talsberg.
D is our answer.

E also weakens, showing that average citizens in Schwarts spend less time at the gym.

We are given that in town of S, more gym memberships are bought than in the town of T.
Conclusion: Since there are more memberships bought in S than in -----> The citizens of S exercise more frequently than do the citizens of T

Let's look at the choices:

A. Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg does.

  • S having a larger population than T, brings in an alternate reason as to why more memberships are bought in S than in T. This weakens the conclusion. Eliminate
B. Most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships in gyms there.
  • If citizens of T are working out at the gyms in S, and not at the gyms in their own city, this could mean that we cannot for sure say that citizens of S exercise more frequently than do citizens of T. Weakens the conclusin. Eliminate
C. The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg.
  • If the membership price in S is lower than that of T, this means that more number of people in S than in T are likely to hit the gym due to lower pricing. This gives an alternate reason to why the memberships bought in S are greater than in T. Weakens the conclusion. Eliminate
D. A large, free community gym open to all is available to the citizens of Talsberg.
  • This gives a reason to believe that paid memberships in city T cannot be taken as a proxy for the total number of people who are exercising. Since, some or maybe most could be using the free community gym. This weakens the conclusion. Eliminate
E. The average citizen of Schwartz spends less time at the gym per week than does the average citizen of Talsberg.
  • Even if people in S spend less time at the gym per week than do people in T, we can still say to some level that people in S exercise more frequently (albeit for a shorter duration) than people in T. This doesnot weaken the conclusion. Keep

E seems to be best choice here.

Schwartz -> More memberships , Talsberg -> Less membership (Fact)

Conclusion -> Schwartz exercise more frequently.

Question type 'Weaken - Except"

A. Schwartz large population -> More people-> More membership. but they still may be less frequent. ELIMINATE
B. Talsberg people have membership in Schwartz. they may be more frequent than Schwartz people. ELIMINATE
