Option A - If Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg, that may explain the rise in gym memberships rather than the frequency of exercise. This statement weakens the argument. Not the answer.

B - This also weakens the argument as it would imply that there are more Talsberg citizens obtaining membership and not the other way. Not the answer.

C - The average price being less may explain a rise in gym memberships in Schwartz rather than the frequency of exercise and thus weakens the argument. Not our answer.

D - It would imply that many people in Talsberg would do their exercises without any membership and thus weakens the argument. Not our answer.

E - The average time spent in the gym between the two towns does not have any bearing on the frequency of exercise in these towns. It does not weaken the argument and hence our answer.

Therefore, Option E

Information given:
- More gym memberships are bought in Schwartz than in Talsberg
- Conclusion: therefore, Schwartz citizens exercise more frequently than Talsberg citizens

Question:
- Which option, if true, does not weaken the conclusion (notice rephrase to make it easier to solve, while keeping exact meaning)

Solution:
- A: Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg does
- More people, more memberships expected, per person, they may not exercise more
- Weakens conclusion

- B: Most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships in gyms there
- Schwartz's membership includes Talsberg citizens, so it doesn't reflect Schwartz citizens alone
- Additionally, the count of Talsberg gym memberships bought excludes some Talsberg citizens who purchase their gym membership in Schwartz
- Weakens conclusion

- C: The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than in Talsberg
- Cheaper memberships might attract more buyers, but this does not mean that citizens do not use them
- Does not clearly break the link between member memberships = more exercise
- Does not weaken conclusion

- D: A large, free community gym open to all is available to Talsberg citizens
- Talsberg people can work out without paid memberships, Schwartz's higher paid numbers may not mean more actual exercise
- Weakens conclusion

- E: The average citizen of Schwartz spends less time at the gym per week than the average citizen of Talsberg
- Direct evidence they actually exercise less despite more memberships
- Weakens conclusion

Answer: C, the average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than in Talsberg

More gym memberships are bought in the town of Schwartz than in the town of Talsberg. Therefore, the citizens of Schwartz exercise more frequently than do the citizens of Talsberg.

Each of the following, if true, weakens the conclusion above EXCEPT:

A. Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg does.
B. Most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships in gyms there.
C. The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg.
D. A large, free community gym open to all is available to the citizens of Talsberg.
E. The average citizen of Schwartz spends less time at the gym per week than does the average citizen of Talsberg.

The argument concludes that citizens of Schwartz exercise more frequently than citizens of Talsberg based solely on the premise that more gym memberships are bought in Schwartz. To weaken this conclusion, an option must undermine the link between the number of gym memberships and the frequency of exercise. Options A, B, C, and D all provide reasons why more gym memberships in Schwartz do not necessarily mean that Schwartz citizens exercise more frequently, but option E does not weaken the conclusion.

Option A: Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg. This weakens the conclusion because the higher number of memberships could simply be due to population size, not a higher rate of exercise per citizen. If the membership rate per person is the same or lower in Schwartz, the conclusion is undermined.

Option B: Most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships in gyms there. This weakens the conclusion because the gym memberships counted in Schwartz include non-citizens (from Talsberg), so the higher number does not reflect Schwartz citizens' exercise habits. Additionally, Talsberg citizens may exercise just as much, but their memberships are not counted in Talsberg.

Option C: The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than in Talsberg. This weakens the conclusion because lower prices might encourage more people to buy memberships (e.g., due to affordability or impulse), but it does not necessarily mean they use them more frequently or exercise more. Higher prices in Talsberg might mean only dedicated individuals buy memberships, leading to higher usage rates.

Option D: A large, free community gym is available to citizens of Talsberg. This weakens the conclusion because Talsberg citizens may exercise frequently using the free gym without purchasing memberships, so fewer memberships bought in Talsberg do not indicate lower exercise frequency.

Option E: The average citizen of Schwartz spends less time at the gym per week than the average citizen of Talsberg. This does not weaken the conclusion because it addresses the duration of gym visits, not the frequency of exercise. "Exercise frequency" refers to how often exercise occurs (e.g., number of sessions per week), while "time spent" refers to the duration per session or total time. It is possible for Schwartz citizens to exercise more frequently (e.g., more sessions) but for shorter durations, resulting in less total time at the gym. Thus, this option does not contradict the conclusion about frequency and does not undermine the argument.

Therefore, option E is the exception, as it does not weaken the conclusion.

Correct answer: Option (C) The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg.
Here we have to find sentence which is least weakening.
Let’s take one by one:
A. Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg does. It weakens
B. Most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships in gyms there. It weakens
C. The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg. It less weakens
D. A large, free community gym open to all is available to the citizens of Talsberg. It weakens
E. The average citizen of Schwartz spends less time at the gym per week than does the average citizen of Talsberg. It weakens

Question analysis
more gym memberships in schwartz implies more exercise as per question

identify assumptions
1) the argument assumes that a bought membership implies used membership
2) the argument assumes that the two cities have thesame population
3) theargument assumes that there is no cross transfer of membership and gym utilisation between cities
4) the argument members spend same amount of time per session in gym and do same number of sessions

all the proposed answers attack the assumptions above except C. The argument has nothing to do with price.

Analyzing each of the options from (A) to (E),

A. Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg does - This is a weakener. If 500 out of 1000 go to the gym in Schwartz and if 90 out of 100 buy do so in Talsberg then the argument does not hold water. Eliminate
B. Most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships in gyms there - This is a direct weakener as it weakens the claim that people from Talsberg are less active. if most citizens are going there they may be just as physically active as the people in Schwartz. Eliminate
C. The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg - This is a neutral statement & is not a direct weakener like the others as the price of gym membership is not directly linked to gym going frequency. Keep
D. A large, free community gym open to all is available to the citizens of Talsberg - This is also a weakener as it gives us an alternative reason to believe that the citizens of Talsberg are just as physically active as the people in Schwartz even without gym memberships. Eliminate
E. The average citizen of Schwartz spends less time at the gym per week than does the average citizen of Talsberg - This is again a weakener as if time spent by Schwartz is less on average than Talsberg than Schwartz may not be more physically active than Talsberg. They may be doing cardio while Talsberg citizens might be jacking up. Eliminate

Hence the best possible answer to this question is option (C) The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg.

The fact that gym memberships are cheaper does not weaken the conclusion that Schwartz residents exercise more frequently than Talsberg, if anything, it strengthens the argument.

Conclusion: the citizens of Schwartz exercise more frequently than do the citizens of Talsberg.

A. Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg does.
This explains the higher gym membership in Schwartz as more people, NOT more frequent exercise, hence weakening the conclusion.

B. Most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships in gyms there.
Clearly weakens the conclusion

C. The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg.
The price is not related to exercise frequency. This is potentially the right option.

D. A large, free community gym open to all is available to the citizens of Talsberg.
This shows that Talsberg has a lot of people doing exercise without going to gym. This weakens the conclusion

E. The average citizen of Schwartz spends less time at the gym per week than does the average citizen of Talsberg.
This shows that exercise time per week can be an important factor, hence weakening the conclusion

Answer: C

Answer

(C) The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg.

Explanation

The Argument's Flaw: The argument assumes that because more gym memberships are sold in Schwartz, the people there must exercise more.

The Question: We need to find the one answer choice that DOES NOT weaken this conclusion. Four of the options will show a flaw in the argument, and one will not.
  • (A) Weakens: If Schwartz has a bigger population, the percentage of people with memberships might be lower than in Talsberg.
  • (B) Weakens: This shows that Talsberg citizens are the ones buying the memberships in Schwartz, which breaks the argument's logic.
  • (D) Weakens: This shows that Talsberg citizens have another way to exercise for free, so they don't need to buy memberships to be active.
  • (E) Weakens: This directly attacks the conclusion by stating that Schwartz citizens spend less time at the gym.

(C) It is the correct answer because it STRENGTHENS the argument. If gym memberships are cheaper in Schwartz, it provides a logical reason why more people would buy them and, therefore, supports the idea that exercising is more common there. It doesn't weaken the conclusion at all.

I believe the answer is C, because we need to find an answer that does not weaken. Between A and C, it comes down to frequency as a modifier, and I believe lesser average price would not weaken the argument.

Last two choices boiled down to A and C. C sort of neutralised the argument , although it didnt explicitly support Schwartz

The Argument:
  • Premise: More gym memberships are bought in Schwartz than in Talsberg.
  • Conclusion: Citizens of Schwartz exercise more frequently than citizens of Talsberg.

Weakening the Conclusion means providing a reason why the citizens of Schwartz might not exercise more frequently than the citizens of Talsberg, even if more memberships are bought there.

Let's analyze each option:
  • A. Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg does.
    • Weakens: If Schwartz has a much larger population, then a higher number of memberships doesn't necessarily mean a higher proportion of the population exercises, or that the average citizen exercises more.
  • B. Most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships in gyms there.
    • Weakens: This directly attacks the premise-conclusion link. If Talsberg citizens are buying memberships in Schwartz, then the higher number of memberships in Schwartz isn't primarily due to Schwartz citizens exercising. It means Talsberg citizens are exercising, but their memberships are counted in Schwartz. This significantly weakens the conclusion about Schwartz citizens exercising more.
  • C. The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg.
    • Weakens: A lower price might lead to more people buying memberships without necessarily using them more frequently. People might be more willing to sign up for a cheap membership even if they don't plan to go often, or they might buy multiple memberships. This suggests the number of memberships doesn't directly equate to exercise frequency. This weakens the conclusion.
  • D. A large, free community gym open to all is available to the citizens of Talsberg.
    • Weakens: If Talsberg citizens have access to a free gym, they might not need to buy traditional gym memberships to exercise frequently. They could be exercising just as much, or even more, without contributing to the "gym memberships bought" statistic. This weakens the conclusion.
  • E. The average citizen of Schwartz spends less time at the gym per week than does the average citizen of Talsberg.
    • Does NOT Weaken: This statement directly contradicts the conclusion ("citizens of Schwartz exercise more frequently"). If Schwartz citizens spend less time at the gym, it means they are exercising less frequently on average than Talsberg citizens. This information would support the idea that the conclusion is false, or rather, it is the conclusion's opposite. Therefore, it does not weaken the conclusion; in fact, if true, it provides direct evidence against the conclusion, making the argument's conclusion less likely. The question asks which statement EXCEPT weakens the conclusion. This statement is effectively saying the conclusion is false, it's not a reason why the premise doesn't lead to the conclusion.

Premise: People in Schwartz buy more gym memberships than in Talsberg
Conclusion: the citizens of Schwartz exercise more frequently than do the citizens of Talsberg.

Gap analysis: Do I believe Schwartz citizens exercise more frequently just because they buy more gym memberships than people in Talsberg? No, its not enough to make me believe. I need to see actual data that speaks to this directly, if not there might be other reasons for the difference. For all we know people in Talberg may do more of swimming, bike riding or outdoor sports. They may also have little to no gyms. Even the people in Schwarts could be paying just because its cheap say $2 and they always have promo but over 50% waste it.

Assumption: A summary of the gaps = there are no other reasons for this difference and the only reason (cause) -why people in Schwartz buy more gym memberships than in Talsberg - is because people in Schwartz excercise more freq.

Question: all weaken EXCEPT? so i will eliminate anything that gives me an alternative explanation to why people in people in Schwartz buy more gym memberships than in Talsberg.

A,B,C,D - each give an alternative reason as to why people in Schwartz buy more gym memberships than in Talsberg.

E- does not weaken. It's out of scope (talks about time spent and not frequency of visits)
