option A,B,C,D weaken the argument because they give alternative reason for membership in S. town so eliminated.
Option E talks about duration of exercise which don't affect the frequency of doing exercise - correct answer

Bunuel
More gym memberships are bought in the town of Schwartz than in the town of Talsberg. Therefore, the citizens of Schwartz exercise more frequently than do the citizens of Talsberg.

Each of the following, if true, weakens the conclusion above EXCEPT:

A. Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg does.
B. Most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships in gyms there.
C. The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg.
D. A large, free community gym open to all is available to the citizens of Talsberg.
E. The average citizen of Schwartz spends less time at the gym per week than does the average citizen of Talsberg.

C because Lower prices could lead to more memberships, but don't directly address exercise frequency, making it the option

BECAUSE more gym memberships are bought in S
THEREFORE people in S exercise more frequently

The answer can strengthen the conclusion or be neutral

A. S has a higher population => the percentage of memberships (gym memberships/total population) might be less or equal to T. Weakens
B. If T citizens are buying memberships in S, it means S doesn't necessarily have people going to the gym more frequently. Weakens.
C. People might buy memberships just because they are cheap. Doesn't mean people actually go to the gym frequently. Weakens.
D. With a free gym, T citizens don't have to buy memberships, but they are exercising. Weakens.
E. People spend less time at the gym on average => exercise less. Does not weaken.

Answer: E

The conclusion of the argument is " Therefore, the citizens of Schwartz exercise more frequently than do the citizens of Talsberg" and the reasoning provided is solely because "More gym memberships are bought in the town of Schwartz than in the town of Talsberg ". Our goal is to weaken the conclusion (this is an except type question)

A. Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg does.

We can eliminate this option as this option weakens the conclusion. More population could indicate the increase in membership.

B. Most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships in gyms there.

Similar to option A, we can eliminate this option as this is a weakner. Talsberg citizens may be using the gyms in Schwartz, hence there is an increase in membership there.

C. The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg.

Well price doesn't play any role in the conclusion. Hence, this option doesn't weaken. We can keep this option.

D. A large, free community gym open to all is available to the citizens of Talsberg.

This option does weaken. Probably the membership in Talsberg is low because of the free gym, but people excerise more. Hence eliminate D.

E. The average citizen of Schwartz spends less time at the gym per week than does the average citizen of Talsberg.

This option is a weakner as well. As the citizen spend less time in the gym, we can conclude that they don't exercise more frequently.

Option C is the answer.

I got confused between option A and option E. So, in the first attempt, I chose option E, and then in the second attempt, I chose option A, which is the correct one.

Option E: It undermines the conclusion as the less time per week, clearly shows that Schwatz are less frequent and more average time of Talsberg says that it's citizens are request. As average time is the function of sum of the time spend all day of the week/ 7. If each day one spend same time even if they skip or two day less that the other group, they average of the first will be higher.

Option A: As the population doesn't day anything about the frequency. It has no effect on the argument

A. Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg does. Weakens; This says more membership bcoz of more population & hence cannot be concluded about their effective gym effort
B. Most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships in gyms there. Weakens. If citizens of T do gym in S, then T may be doing gym more frequently.
C. The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg. Correct. Cost has no effect.
D. A large, free community gym open to all is available to the citizens of Talsberg. Weakens. This says citizen of T do more gym but free of cost
E. The average citizen of Schwartz spends less time at the gym per week than does the average citizen of Talsberg. Weakens. Even if number of membership is more in S, people using it are less

Gym member ships are being bought in both towns of Schwartz and Talsberg. Since, more membership is bought, which means more citizens of Schwartz exercise more frequently than citizens of Talsberg.

Conclusion is : the citizens of Schwartz exercise more frequently than do the citizens of Talsberg.

let’s explore the option and find the option which does not weaken the conclusion.

A. Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg does.

A larger population implies more people out of these population opt for gym memberships. Buying more memberships doesn’t denote increased frequency in working. Hence. Weakens.

B. Most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships in gyms there.

Just bcoz more citizens of Talsberg have memberships in Schwartz, doesn’t mean increased frequency of Schwartz citizens. Hence, weakens.

C. The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg.

Average price being lower, pulls or attracts more membership. That doesn’t mean they all frequent the gym. Hence, weakens.

D. A large, free community gym open to all is available to the citizens of Talsberg.

A large free community gym at talsberg supports the argument that membership f Schwartz is greater than talsberg. Because free gym attracts a greater pool of participants. That doesn’t mean in any sense, frequency is increased or lower. Hence, weakens.

E. The average citizen of Schwartz spends less time at the gym per week than does the average citizen of Talsberg.

The argument says increased membership leads to increased frequency.

Here, decreased frequency means # citizens of Schwartz work less frequently at gyms compared to citizens of talsberg. Thus, contradicts the conclusion. Thus option E

S - Schwartz, T - Talsberg
The conclusion that "citizens of Schwartz exercise more frequently than do the citizens of Talsberg" is supported by the information that "More gym memberships are bought in the town of Schwartz than in the town of Talsberg. "
If any option choice suggest another reason for the "more" number of gym membership and that it's not linked with the "Exercise frequency" => its a weakener

A. Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg does : indicates that the more membership count is be due to larger population base : eliminate
B. Most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships in gyms there : If this is true that means the memberships in Schwartz are contributed by Talsberg folks as well hence we can't say that Schwartz folks are exercising more frequently. : eliminate
C. The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg. : gives a reason to S folks to enroll more in gym -> eliminate
D. A large, free community gym open to all is available to the citizens of Talsberg. : gives a reason why membership count is lower in T -> eliminate
E. The average citizen of Schwartz spends less time at the gym per week than does the average citizen of Talsberg : even if a citizen spends less time per week on avg the frequency can be higher or lower doesnt weakens our conclusion

Choice E doesn't weaken the conclusion
PS : changed my ans while writing the explanation ; couldn't think thoroughly on option E initially while answering.

A. WEAKEN. Since more citizens mean more membership, it could weaken the fact that the citizens of Schwartz exercise more.
B. WEAKEN. This fact shows that more gym memberships in Schwartz town could be because Talsberg's citizens who work there.
C. NOT WEAKEN. If the average price of membership is lower, it supports the fact that more memberships in Schwartz, and it could also lead to the passage's conclusion that more Schwartz exercise more.
D. WEAKEN. Since it is a large FREE gym open in Talsberg, not many people bought memberships in Talsberg.
E. WEAKEN. Even though, more membership in Schwartz but spends less time at the gym, it could also weaken the fact that the citizens of Schwartz exercise more.

Ans - C The average price isn't the concern here; what's important is whether the memberships are being used. This doesn't necessarily suggest that Schwartz citizens exercise less frequently

  • E. Solution:

A. Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg does. Correct. It strengthens rather than weakens
B. Most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships in gyms there. Incorrect. It weakens the argument by stating the reasoning behind why memberships are more in Schwartz
C. The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg. Incorrect Average price can only be less when the number of memberships is more.
D. A large, free community gym open to all is available to the citizens of Talsberg. Incorrect. So, this really counters the conclusion
E. The average citizen of Schwartz spends less time at the gym per week than does the average citizen of Talsberg. Incorrect It weakens the conclusion.

Argument:
Gym membership in S>T.
therefore, S citizen exercise more than T citizens.

Thinking:
This seems like a causual statement.

To weaken this statement we have to prove the relation:
1. either people in S exercise more therefore they have more membership
2. There is all together some other reason for membership to increase.
3. Membership purchase doesnt mean they exercise. Maybe they are motivated to purchase but dont actually do the task.

Question: We need to see what statement in answers have either no effect or strengthen the conclusion

Lets see the answers:

A. Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg does. (gives another reason why membership can be high, so weaken)
B. Most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships in gyms there.(gives another reason why membership can be high, so weaken)
C. The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg.(Membership is more because price might be lower but we already know membership is high in S than T, It justifies that and not the conclusion so it has no effect, seems like an answer)
D. A large, free community gym open to all is available to the citizens of Talsberg. (This shows talsberg members might exercise more and not have to enroll to gym so, this also weakens)
E. The average citizen of Schwartz spends less time at the gym per week than does the average citizen of Talsberg. (spending time in gym means they are exercising so this weakens the conclusions)

Answer:

We can conclude Statement C has no effect on the conclusion hence this is the correct answer.

More gym memberships are bought in the town of Schwartz than in the town of Talsberg. Therefore, the citizens of Schwartz exercise more frequently than do the citizens of Talsberg.

Each of the following, if true, weakens the conclusion above EXCEPT:

A. Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg does.: Does weaken the argument since it dismissed the claim that S citizens exercise more frequently, it is just that S citizens are large in number and hence have bought more number of memberships

B. Most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships in gyms there.
Again weakens the argument since additional memberships in S is nothing but citizens of T working in S and thus having a gym membership

C. The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg.

Weakens the argument: if price is lower, it automatically attracts more people to buy memberships, necessarily not meaning the frequency is more in S

D. A large, free community gym open to all is available to the citizens of Talsberg.

This also weakens the argument as a large community gym is the reasons why less memberships are sold in T and not because citizens of T exercise less

E. The average citizen of Schwartz spends less time at the gym per week than does the average citizen of Talsberg.

By elimination method, E is the right answer

Each of the following, if true, weakens the conclusion above EXCEPT:

A. Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg does. (Weakens because a larger population can indicate lower average gym membership per person)
B. Most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships in gyms there. (Weakens because this would indicate that the number of memberships bought in schwartz is caused by people from both towns, thus our measure of gym membership will be wrong and conclusion hollow)
C. The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg. (Weakens because it brings another contradicting fact for the conclusion)
D. A large, free community gym open to all is available to the citizens of Talsberg. (Weakens because this would suggest that some of the people of Talsberg don't use the gym for exercise and might be the reason why less people in talsberg buy gym membership, which is contradictory to the conslusion)
E. The average citizen of Schwartz spends less time at the gym per week than does the average citizen of Talsberg. (Correct because this gives a fact that directly supports the conclusion)

Ans: E (IMHO)

More gym memberships are bought in the town of Schwartz than in the town of Talsberg. Therefore, the citizens of Schwartz exercise more frequently than do the citizens of Talsberg.
Each of the following, if true, weakens the conclusion above EXCEPT:

Given to us: Because Membership S > T --> concludes that Frequency S > T
we need to find a statement that doesn't weaken the conclusion above.

A. Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg does.
because S has a larger population than T, that could be the reason for higher membership, this doesn't mean frequency S> T (Weakens the argument)

B. Most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships in gyms there.
If people from T have memberships in S, that explains the highger membership for S and this attacks the conclusion. (Weakens the argument)

C. The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg.
lower price could be the reason for higher memberships but it doesn't mean that frequency at S is greater than T (Weakens the argument)

D. A large, free community gym open to all is available to the citizens of Talsberg.
A large free community gym may be the reason why membership for T is lower which (Weakens the argument)

E. The average citizen of Schwartz spends less time at the gym per week than does the average citizen of Talsberg.
Spending time at the sym, but it doesn't say anything about the frequency, so it doesn't impact the argument.

We need to discard any statement that makes stronger the conclusion that because in Schwartz more gym membership are bought is due to because locals/citizens of Schwarz are the ones who bought them because they exercise more frequently.

A. Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg does. IRRELEVANT. Doesn't explain if Schwartzs' citizens do exercise.
B. Most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships in gyms there. Would explain why more membership are bought in Schwartz but it doesn't support that the citizens of Schwartz are the ones who exercise more frequently.
C. The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg. CORRECT
Would explain why more membership are bought in Schwartz and it could support that the citizens of Schwartz are the ones who exercise more frequently due to the lower price.
D. A large, free community gym open to all is available to the citizens of Talsberg. INCORRECT, this weakens the conclusion because Talsbergs' citizens wouldn't need to buy a membership as a free gym community is available and also doesnt support that Swartzs' citizens exercise frequently.
E. The average citizen of Schwartz spends less time at the gym per week than does the average citizen of Talsberg. INCORRECT, even Schwartz's' citizens spend less time at gym, it doesn't mean that they go less frequently to the gym.
