The argument's flaw is assuming that selling more gym memberships means people exercise more frequently. We must find the one option that does not attack this flawed logic.

Four options weaken the conclusion by providing alternative explanations. A larger population in Schwartz, Talsberg citizens buying memberships in Schwartz, cheaper prices in Schwartz, or a free gym in Talsberg all show why the number of purchased memberships is a poor measure of local exercise habits.

The exception is option E, which states that Schwartz citizens spend less time at the gym per week. This does not weaken the conclusion. The argument is about exercise frequency (how often), not duration (how long). One can go to the gym more frequently but for shorter sessions. Because it addresses a different metric, this statement does not undermine the argument.

The correct answer is (E).

More gym memberships are bought in the town of Schwartz than in the town of Talsberg. Therefore, the citizens of Schwartz exercise more frequently than do the citizens of Talsberg.

Each of the following, if true, weakens the conclusion above EXCEPT:

A. Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg does. => here it says that "SC" has higher no of population that "TA" but it does not mean they are exercise frequently so weakens.
B. Most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships in gyms there. => this clearly says that increase in membership is due to many citizens working in the Schwarts. it gives us reason why memberships are higher hence weakens the conclusion
C. The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg. => if price is lower that means people may be buying unnecessary memberships but not exercising frequently so weakens
D. A large, free community gym open to all is available to the citizens of Talsberg. => ok of free community gyms are there and if people from talsberg are going there frequently then this attacks the reasoning and shows memberships are low because free gyms so weakens
E. The average citizen of Schwartz spends less time at the gym per week than does the average citizen of Talsberg. => this is interesting if people from Schwarts spend less time on average and they have more membership it means there total time is also less in fact this is strengthening the argument somewhat. her the Ans

The argument states that more gym memberships are bought in Schwartz than in Talsberg, and concludes that citizens of Schwartz exercise more frequently than citizens of Talsberg.
For each option, I'll determine whether it weakens the argument:
A) Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg does.
This weakens the argument because if Schwartz has more people, it would naturally have more gym memberships even if its citizens don't exercise more frequently on a per-person basis. The raw number of memberships doesn't tell us about exercise frequency per citizen.
B) Most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships in gyms there.
This weakens the argument because it explains that many of the gym memberships counted for Schwartz actually belong to Talsberg citizens, meaning Schwartz citizens aren't necessarily exercising more.
C) The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg.
This does NOT weaken the argument. Lower prices might explain why more memberships are purchased in Schwartz, but it doesn't challenge the conclusion that Schwartz citizens exercise more frequently. If anything, more affordable memberships could support higher exercise frequency.
D) A large, free community gym open to all is available to the citizens of Talsberg.
This weakens the argument because it suggests Talsberg citizens may exercise frequently at this free gym without needing paid memberships, so the membership count doesn't accurately reflect exercise frequency.
E) The average citizen of Schwartz spends less time at the gym per week than does the average citizen of Talsberg.
This directly weakens the argument by stating that Talsberg citizens actually spend more time exercising at gyms, contradicting the conclusion.
Since we're looking for the option that does NOT weaken the argument, the answer is C.

Effect: Strengthens or supports the idea that Schwartz citizens might not exercise more, but the conclusion is about frequency, not duration. So this is slightly irrelevant or ambiguous in terms of weakening does NOT clearly weaken the conclusion.

(E) only tells us about time spent at the gym per week (“average citizen of Schwartz spends less time...”). That speaks to duration, not the number of visits. Schwartzers could still go more often but for shorter sessions.

All the other options tell us about why the number of membership might be higher

A. Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg does.
This weakens because it clearly tells that more membership is due to large population while greater proportion of exercise goers could exist in Talasberg hence OUT

B. Most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships in gyms there.
This weakens the argument because it's the citizen of talsberg exercising in Schwartz than the citizen of Schwartz hence OUT

C. The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg.
This statement weaken the argument because may be people are buying more because it's cheaper rather than for the reason that they exercise more frequently

D. A large, free community gym open to all is available to the citizens of Talsberg.
This statement doesn't weaken as it instead strengthens the argument that more membership in Schwatrtz is reflection of peoples' intent to exercise CORRECT answer

E. The average citizen of Schwartz spends less time at the gym per week than does the average citizen of Talsberg.
This weakens the argument by adding a tinge of suspicion that more membership doesn't mean more exercise

A- Weakens it because there could be just more people buying memberships in Schwartz, which doesn't say anything about the frequency.
B- Weakens it because it helps give another reason of why there are more members buying gym memberships in Schwartz, they are Talsberg citizens
C- Same as above, gives another reason why there are more members buying gym memberships, but there is nothing about frequency
D- Now this seems like the correct answer choice. In the first look it looks like it weakens the conclusion just like other options as it gives us another reason why Talsberg people aren't buying gym subscriptions- because there's a free gym available for all and the citizens could just be excercising as frequently if not more than the citizens of Schwartz. But, this is a trap. We have no idea if there is no large, free community gym in Schwartz. Maybe there's an even better gym over there, but people are still buying gym memberships because they just excercise more frequently.
E- This is also a weakener as it directly contradicts our conclusion

KEY- All options other than D directly compare both towns, letting us draw conclusions but in option D, we just never know what's going on in Schwartz.

A. Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg does.
Larger population may lead to more gym memberships. But this still doesn't weaken the conclusion directly. Keep.
B. Most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships in gyms there.
If most citizens of Talsberg have memberships in Schwartz then we cannot conclude that the more number of gym memberships correspond to more frequent exercise habits among the Schwartz citizens. Weakens.
C. The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg.
This could be the reason why more people end up purchasing gym memberships, not the motivation to exercise more frequently. Weakens.
D. A large, free community gym open to all is available to the citizens of Talsberg.
So the Talsberg citizens don't need gym memberships to exercise frequently. Weakens.
E. The average citizen of Schwartz spends less time at the gym per week than does the average citizen of Talsberg.
If the time spent at the gym is higher in Talsberg, they might be getting in more exercise compared to the folks at Schwartz. Weakens.

In my opinion, all of the choices weaken the argument. But only A seems to not directly attack the conclusion. Hence, selecting A.

For this question there is a double negation so basically we have to find strengthening statement.
A is the perfect choice because- If Schwartz has larger population than it will result in more memberships being bought.
B- It will weaken as it implies people of Talsberg also exercise as same as Schwartz.
C- If the avg price is lower than Talsberg people would also come there or any neighbouring cities will come to gym.
D- If Talsberg has a community gym obviously it will reflect on the memberships bought will be little.
E- This is not remotely connected to original statement.

Prethinking:
What suggests that it's NOT the case that citizens of Schwartz exercise more frequently than do the citizens of Talsberg.
More gym memberships is not equal to more frequent exercises. What if people purchase but don't exercise or don't purchase the membership but do exercise?

A. Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg does. Weakens, it explains why more memberships are sold in Schwartz
B. Most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships in gyms there. Weakens, it suggests, it might be citizens of Talsberg exercising more. Just that they exercise in Schwartz gyms
C. The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg. Weakens, it explains why more people buy gym members in Schwartz
D. A large, free community gym open to all is available to the citizens of Talsberg. Weakens, it explains why less people buy gym members in Talsberg
E. The average citizen of Schwartz spends less time at the gym per week than does the average citizen of Talsberg. Doesn't weaken. The avg time spend is not a measure of frequency. May be people visit more often but for shorter duration. This would infact strengthen it

The conculsion would be - the citizens of Schwartz exercise more frequently than do the citizens of Talsberg.

A) Tells us about the size of population, but nothing about the frequency of gym going. (This could be the answer)

B) This explains the higher gym membership in Schwartz as due to Talsberg citizens buying them, not Schwartz citizens, which weakens.

C) Cheaper memberships could lead to more being bought without saying more exercise, weakens

D) Citizens of Talsberg may not need paid gym memberships to exercise frequently, which also weakens

E) This option tells us that despite more memberships, Schwartz citizens might exercise less, which strongly weakens.

Therefore A would be our answer.

in conclusion the writer is implying is that the number of memberships bought are directly responsible for the fitness, whereas it is the time spent training in the gym that can say anything about the fitness, not the memberships bought per say.

A. Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg does.
It weakens the conclusion, since we do not know the numbers, it can be that proportionally Schwartz population exercise less than Talsberg.

B. Most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships in gyms there.
It weakens the conclusion, since the number of memberships of each city have influence from this item. So, we do not know if Schwartz population exercise more than Talsberg population.

C. The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg.
The memberchip price is not relevant to answer our question. So, this phrase is not related and, therefore, do not weakens the conclusion.

D. A large, free community gym open to all is available to the citizens of Talsberg.
It weakens the conclusion since now the gym membership is not the only "exercise-related" measure for the population. Population of Talsberg may exercise more, but whitout needing to pay for gym memberships.

E. The average citizen of Schwartz spends less time at the gym per week than does the average citizen of Talsberg.
It weakens the conclusion since shows that the average citizen of Talsberg exercise more than the peer from Schwartz.

Answer C.

Statement: More gym memberships are bought in the town of Schwartz than in the town of Talsberg.
Conclusion: Therefore, the citizens of Schwartz exercise more frequently than do the citizens of Talsberg.

We need to choose an option which DOES NOT weaken the conclusion.

Option A: Schwartz has a larger population than Talsberg does.
If Schwartz has a larger population, it is possible that more gym memberships are bought in Schwartz as a consequence of the higher population when compared to Talsberg but this does not mean that citizens of Schwartz exercise more frequently. ELIMINATE this answer.

Option B: Most citizens of Talsberg work in Schwartz and have memberships in gyms there.
If this is true, the higher gym memberships bought in the town of Schwartz could be a direct consequence and hence weakens the conclusion by attacking the support in the argument. ELIMINATE this answer.

Option C: The average price of a gym membership is lower in Schwartz than it is in Talsberg.
This attacks the support by introducing the possibility that more gym memberships are being bought in Schwartz because they are cheaper and not because citizens of Schwartz exercise more frequently. ELIMINATE this answer.

Option D: A large, free community gym open to all is available to the citizens of Talsberg.
This casts a doubt on the support by mentioning an alternate explanation for the higher number of memberships bought in Schwartz. ELIMINATE this answer.

By the process of elimination, E is the only valid answer possible. But let us go through that option as well.
Option E: The average citizen of Schwartz spends less time at the gym per week than does the average citizen of Talsberg.
Spending less time per week does not necessarily reflect anything on the "frequency" of exercise. Thus, this does not affect the conclusion in any way. E is the answer.
