Statement (1) : 6 colors, 56 stamps
  • Doesn't tell us how many albums
  • Can't answer the question
Statement (2): 9 albums, 56 stamps
  • Doesn't tell us how many colors
  • Can't answer the question
Both statements together: 56 stamps, 6 colors, 9 albums
To avoid having two stamps of the same color in any album, each album can have at most 6 stamps (one of each color).

  • 9 albums × 6 stamps max per album = 54 stamps maximum
  • But we have 56 stamps
  • 56 > 54, so it's impossible!

Bob is organizing his stamp collection by placing all 56 of his stamps into several albums. Is there at least one album that contains two or more stamps of the same color?

(1) Each stamp in the collection is exactly one of the following six colors: red, blue, green, yellow, orange, or violet.
(2) Bob places the stamps into 9 albums, with each stamp placed in exactly one album.

Bob has 56 stamps and places these stamps into several albums. Does an album contain more than one colour. To answer this, we have to know how many colour variants are the stamps and how many albums he arranges the stamps into since we want to be sure that no album has more than one stamp of the same colour variant.

Statement 1: Each stamp in the collection is exactly one of the following six colors: red, blue, green, yellow, orange, or violet.

So we know the stamp are of 6 colours but we dont know how he arranges them. It can take several possibilities. He could put all 56 in an album or spread it across 56 albums. So the range of albums could is from 1 to 56. If it is 1, then yes the album has more than 1 colour in the same album
Whereas if they are arranged into 56 albums, then 1 album contains no stamp of the same colour. Thus statement 1 is insufficient.

Statement 2: Bob places the stamps into 9 albums, with each stamp placed in exactly one album.

So we know the number of albums but not the number of colours. But we know that 1 album could hold at least (56/9= 6) 6 stamps to 8 stamps regardless of the colour as there is a remainder of 2 from (56/9 ). Again because we dont know how many colours they are, we cannot say for sure if an album has a stamp of the same colour. If there are 6 colour variants, then at least one album would have 2 stamps of the same colour variant. If there is just one colour variant, then all 9 albums could hold stamps of the same colour. Thus statement 2 is insufficient

Combining both statements. We know how many colour variants are the stamp and how many albums they are placed into, essentially how they are arranged. Because from statement 1 each stamp in the collection is exactly one of the following six colors: red, blue, green, yellow, orange, or violet. so one album contains 6 stamps of different colours and from statement 2 Bob places the stamps into 9 albums, with each stamp placed in exactly one album. So after arranging 6 stamps with different colours into 9 separate albums. This leaves 2 stamps of different colors, as at least 2 of the coloured stamps are 7 in number. So when this 2 are placed into an album we would have 4 stamps ( 2 of each different colour) that are the same. This Both statement together are sufficient but none is sufficient on its own, which is option C.

Statement 1 : We don't have information on the number of album. --->insufficient
Statement 2 : We don't have information on the number of color --->
Statement 1 + Statement : Bob has 9 albums*6 different color of stamps = 54 stamps. It will remain 2 more stamps ---> sufficient

Bob has 56 stamps.
To find if there is at least one album that contains two or more stamps of the same color?

Statement 1.
Each stamp is of one of the six colors: red, blue, green, yellow, orange or violet.
But there can be many number of albums with each having unique colored stamps.
Eg: 10 albums with 9 albums have the six distinct colored stamps and 1 album having the remaining 2.
Not Sufficient.

Statement 2:
We are given 9 albums and the number of stamps are 56.
But we don't know the distinct colors, and cannot determine if any one album contains two or more stamps of the same color or not.
Not Sufficient.

Statement 1 and 2 together:
Now, we have 6 distinct colors and 9 albums.
This means we can have 9 albums having 6 distinct colored stamps.
This leaves us with 56- 9*6=2 stamps
These stamps need to be assigned an album.
Hence, there is at least one album having 2 stamps of the same color.
Sufficient.

ANSWER Option C

Is there at least one album that contains two or more stamps of the same colour?
Answer: Yes we can find this, using both the statement but not any of the statement alone.

Here we check each statement:
(1) Each stamp in the collection is exactly one of the following six colors: red, blue, green, yellow, orange, or violet.
This is additional information we get in terms of colour but here we don't know how many albums are there, it might be 1 or 56 also. We don't know so answer using this statement alone is not possible.

(2) Bob places the stamps into 9 albums, with each stamp placed in exactly one album.
This statement also have additional Information regarding album but if we take only this statement we don't know exactly how many colours are there. So answer using this statement alone is not possible.

We can answer this question by using both the statement as here we have information for both album and colour as well. Let's check:
we have,
stamps= 56
colour= 6
albums= 9
each stamp is in exactly one album
So let's solve this:
If we maximise stamps in album we have
9*6= 54
But Bob have 56
so at least 2 extra stamps must be added somewhere, meaning at least one album must contain 2 stamps of the same colour.
Hence we got the answer.

IMO Answer is C

There are 56 stamps and we have to find out if at least one of the albums have more than one colored stamps
Statement 1) Each stamp in the collection is exactly one of the following six colors: red, blue, green, yellow, orange, or violet - There is no imformation about the albums, hence INSUFFICIENT
Statement 2) Bob places the stamps into 9 albums, with each stamp placed in exactly one album.- There is no information about the colors of the stamps, hence INSUFFICIENT
Statement 1 tell us-each stamp of the 56 stamps is one of the 6 colors. Statement 2 tells us that Bob places the stamps into 9 albums, each stamp of a color in one album. so 56/9 =54 and a Remainder of 2 stamps. So there will be two albums which will have more than one colored stamp.

What we want to confirm - if any color is repeated in one or more of the albums
what we do not know - how many albums are the 56 stamps distributed into, and how many different colors are there. We need both these pieces of information to decide.

Statement (1) Each stamp in the collection is exactly one of the following six colors: red, blue, green, yellow, orange, or violet.
This tells us the number of colors but we do not know how many albums Bob has. He could have 56 albums or 1 album or 10...without knowing album number, we cannot see how the stamps can be distributed.

1 is insufficient on its own

Statement (2) Bob places the stamps into 9 albums, with each stamp placed in exactly one album.
This tells us the number of albums but we do not know how many distinct colours are the stamps. There could be 4 colors or 10 colorus ...without knowing number of colours, we cannot see how the stamps can be fit into the 9 albums to avoid repetition of colors within 1 album

2 is insufficient on its own

Statement 1 and Statement 2
now we have 6 colours and 9 albums.
Lets suppose we start putting stamps so as to not repeat any color in an album

So in each album we will have 1 red, 1 blue, 1 green, 1yellow, 1orange, and 1 violet stamp = 6 stamps
so in 9 albums there will be 9*6 = 54 stamps

We still have 2 stamps remaining and we will have to put these stamps into 1 or more of the 9 albums
- So atleast one of the 9 albums will have a repeated colored stamp

1+2 is sufficient to answer.

Bob has 56 stamps, We need to prove there is atleast on albom that contains stamps of same color, So we need placee all the same color into different albums and still hit same color one, The this holds good for all scenerios.

Stmt (1) Each stamp in the collection is exactly one of the following six colors: red, blue, green, yellow, orange, or violet.
Stamp colors are 6 but do we have the album count, If we have 5 albums then it is always possible they will be repeated. But if we have 56 albums then it is possible,

Hence this statment is insufficient.

Stmt (2) Bob places the stamps into 9 albums, with each stamp placed in exactly one album.
If we have 9 albums but all stamps are of 1 color then it is always true, and if 9 albums with 56 colors, Then always false.

Hence stmt 2 is not sufficient.

Now let's combine 1 & 2.

9 albums, 6 colors and 56 stamps.

So even if we distribute all the stmps of each to 9 albums with each. Then 54 stmps are placed in such a way that no album contain more than 1 samee colored stamp. But we are left with 2. Hence it is impossible to haave any combination with out repeating the colors in album.

Both stmts are sufficient, Hence IMO C

(1) Each stamp in the collection is exactly one of the following six colors: red, blue, green, yellow, orange, or violet. 6colours, but 56 can be in 7*8 multiples. But we don't know whether all the albums are filled or some are vacant. (NS)
(2) Bob places the stamps into 9 albums, with each stamp placed in exactly one album. We don't know how much colors are available. (NS)

1&2 We know 6 colors & 56 = 9*6 + 2; that means in one album there has to be more that 6 stamps to accommodate all 56. In this case, there would be repeat of color. (S)

Total = 56 stamps

Question : Is there at least one album that contains two or more stamps of the same color?

Considering statement 1,
Each stamp in the collection is exactly one of the following six colors: red, blue, green, yellow, orange, or violet.
This gives a total of 6 colors that is 56/6 = 9 duplicate stamps of each color and then 2 others, since we are asked if there is at least 1 album.
But this does not give us the detail about the number of albums.; Not sufficient.

Considering statement 2,
Bob places the stamps into 9 albums, with each stamp placed in exactly one album.
This alone does not provide how many colors are present; Not sufficient.

Both statements taken together we get,
There are 56/6 = 9 duplicate stamps of each color and then 2 remaining stamps which can be of any of these colors.
We also have a total of 9 albums. This means that even with 6 different colors in each album, there will be the remaining 2 of a repeated color that needs to be placed in one of the albums.

This will satisfy the condition and hence taken together the statements are sufficient.

Therefore the correct option is Option C

D. 56 stamps, can they be placed like 1 stamp containing 2 or more stamps?
1: 6 colours, 56 isnt divisible by 6, leaves remainder 2, there would certainly be 1 album containing more than 1 stamp. Sufficient.
2: 9 albums , 56 isnt divisible by 9, leaves remainder 2, so again sufficient.

We need to check if at least one album contains 2 or more stamps of the same color

Statement 1 says that every stamp is one of 6 colors, but doesn't say how many albums are used. If enough albums are used, Bob could place at most 1 stamp of each color in every album, so we would not know if any album has a repeat. Insufficient.

Statement 2 says that exactly 9 albums, but doesn't say how many colors are there. If all 56 stamps are of different colors, there would be no repeats in any album. Insufficient.

Both Statements:
With only 6 colors, the most stamps an album can hold without repeating a color is 6.
9 albums can therefore hold at most 54 stamps if no color ever repeats inside an album. Bob has 56 stamps, so the last 2 stamps must go into albums that already contain their color. So there will be at least 1 album with a repeat. Sufficient.

Answer : C.

Statement (1) alone: Insufficient

There are only 6 colors, but no information on how stamps are distributed among albums. Without album info, it’s possible all stamps are separated to avoid repetition.

Statement (2) alone: Insufficient

Stamps are placed into 9 albums, but the number of colors is unknown. Without knowing colors, repetition can be avoided if enough colors exist.

Combined statements (1) and (2): Sufficient

With 6 colors and 9 albums, each album can hold at most 6 uniquely colored stamps. Maximum without repetition is 9 × 6 = 54 stamps, but there are 56 stamps total. Therefore, repetition is guaranteed in at least one album.

Final answer: C. Both statements together are sufficient, neither alone is sufficient.

56 stamps of differnet color kept in albums
1. Colors are given but not further information – Insufficeient.
2. 9 Albums are there, but nothing given about color of stamps- Insufficient.

Combining two – 6v colors, 9 albums and each stamp is palced in exactly one album but nothing given whether stamp must be placed in each album.
Hence, all stamps can be placed in one album – YES
Or let’s say there are only five stamps of five different colors and all rest of the satamps are of one single color – in that case we can place different colored stamps in different albums and same colors will be in a album – Answer is still yes.
Case – 3 : there are maxium of six colors and even we try to assign maximum different colored stamp to each album we get 6*9 = 54 stamps, still while placing last to stamp atleast one of the album will have same color stamp. Hence, C

We are given:

Bob has 56 stamps

He is placing them into several albums

Each stamp is one of 6 colors

We are asked:

> Is there at least one album that contains two or more stamps of the same color?

This is a Yes/No Data Sufficiency question. Let’s analyze each statement independently and then together.

Statement (1):

Each stamp is exactly one of the following 6 colors: red, blue, green, yellow, orange, or violet.

We now know the stamps are from 6 possible colors, but we don’t know how the stamps are distributed across albums, or how many albums there are, or whether Bob grouped them by color or distributed them randomly.

For example:

If each album had only 1 stamp, then clearly no album could have two of the same color.

If Bob sorted by color and used 6 albums, with each album getting all stamps of one color, it’s possible to have albums with multiple same-color stamps.

But without knowing how the stamps are allocated into albums, we can’t answer the question.

Not sufficient.

Statement (2):

Bob places the 56 stamps into 9 albums, each stamp placed in exactly one album.

We now know there are 9 albums and 56 stamps → average = 56/9 ≈ 6.22 stamps per album.

So some albums must contain at least 7 stamps.

But we know nothing about the colors in this statement.

So even if an album has 8 stamps, if each is a different color, it's possible that no two are the same color — but this cannot be determined without knowing how many colors exist.

Not sufficient.

Combine (1) and (2):

Now we know:

56 stamps

9 albums → pigeonhole: at least one album has ⌈56/9⌉ = 7 stamps

Only 6 possible colors

Now ask: can an album have all stamps of different colors?

No

There are only 6 different colors

So at most, you can have 6 differently colored stamps in an album

If an album has 7 or more stamps, at least two must be the same color

Thus, at least one album has ≥7 stamps, and with only 6 possible colors, that album must have ≥2 stamps of the same color.

Together sufficient

Final Answer: C

Each statement alone is not sufficient, but together they are sufficient.

(2)
We also need the number of colors.

Statement is insufficient

(1)+(2)
Trying to answer NO to the question we can put 6 stamps with different colors in the first album. Anoter 6 stamps with different colors in the second album and so on until complete the 9 albums. We have put 54 stamps. The 55th stamp must be put, neccesarily, in an album with another stamp with its same color. The answer is YES.

Both statements are sufficient
