(A) than peaceful farmers
(B) than for peacefully farming
(C) as for peacefully farming
(D) than as peaceful farmers
(E) as peaceful farmers

The idiom used is "more A than B". Two parallel perceptions have been drawn: one is that of a fierce raider, and the other is that of a peaceful farmer. The former is more common.

"Are more often thought of as X... than as Y" is the correct usage.

(A) the 'as' is missing from it. This option simply compares the perception of Vikings as raiders with peaceful farmers whereas the intended comparison is something else.
(B) this option draws a parallel between 'for bringing destruction' and 'for peacefully farming', but that's not the intended comparison.
(C) This just seems... weird and incomplete. "in their famous longships as for peacefully farming"? Doesn't make sense
(D) This makes sense. Let's keep this.
(E) 'as' here indicates the role of Vikings as peaceful farmers but it doesn't show the intended comparison. Moreover, 'more' needs a 'than', so this is unidiomatic.

D is the correct choice.

This one is tricky, but straightforward if you isolate the comparison, drop the modifiers, and make sure that we are properly parallel without losing the meaning of the comparison

Due in part to the fact that much of their history was composed and passed down by non-Scandinavian sources, Vikings are more often thought of in modern times as fierce, raiding warriors notorious for bringing destruction to the far-flung lands that they were able to reach in their famous longships ...

(A) than peaceful farmers - more often thought as ... than - not parallel, incorrect
(B) than for peacefully farming - more often thought as ... than - not parallel, incorrect
(C) as for peacefully farming - more often thought as ... as - partially parallel, but Vikings were thought of as warriors (fierece and raiding are modifiers for warriors) than as for peacefully farming - not parallel (also doesn't have our comparison), incorrect
(D) than as peaceful farmers - correct, as ... than as and as warriors than as farmers. Properly parallel
(E) as peaceful farmers - more often thought as ... as - not parallel, but without the comparison incorrect

Note that the comparison is with the phrase 'as fierce'. We have to look for a phrase that is truly parallel to it.

(A) than peaceful farmers
Incorrect parallelism

(B) than for peacefully farming
Incorrect parallelism

(C) as for peacefully farming
Grammatically incorrect

(D) than as peaceful farmers
Looks good

(E) as peaceful farmers
This completely changes the meaning of the sentence and leaves the comparison incomplete.

(B) than for peacefully farming
(C) as for peacefully farming
(D) than as peaceful farmers
(E) as peaceful farmers

Ans: D

Parallelism is correctly maintained in the role of Vikings in option D. As fierce, raiding warriors is parallel to As peaceful farmers.

Strike off the modifiers to get a clear picture:

Vikings are more often thought of in modern times as fierce, raiding warriors notorious for bringing destruction to the far-flung lands that they were able to reach in their famous longships than as peaceful farmers.

OA: D
Meaning: As history was passed down by non-Scandinavian sources, Vikings are more often thought of in modern times as fierce, raiding "warriors" notorious for bringing destruction to something than as peaceful farmers.
Errors
A) Vikings aren't compared to farmers Vikings quality as fierce warriors is compared to its underappreciated quality of peaceful farmers
B)
i) Grammar: Peacefully farming what? It is abrupt & wordy
ii) X than Y, here both need to // noun warriors is not // prepo phrase for peacefully farming
C) Comparison is essential as followed by a clause is needed for comparison here it use of prepositional phrase after as is incorrect
D) Correct
E) Meaning distortion: Here as followed by noun means that Vikings played the role of peaceful farmers which is incorrect as Vikings were the peaceful farmers. Played the role means that they weren't actually the farmers they just performed the function of peaceful farmers which is wrong
Hence D is the correct ans

Comparison and parallelism is tested.

comparison is between "fierce, raiding warriors" and "peaceful farmers" .. comparison markers is "as"..."than.." which is wrong.. It should be "as".."than as"
BOth parts of comparison must be parallel... "warriors"(noun) will be parallel to "peaceful farmers"(noun)

The idea of the passage is comparing Vikings to be more often thought of in modern times as fierce rather than to be a peaceful farmers,
So the correct construction should be , Vikings to be more often thought of in modern times as fierce than as a peaceful farmers, so only answer E is respecting this logical structure

Correct answer is E
