Correct idiom is more...than so reject C and E. More... than requires parallelism to be maintained: More X than Y . Choice A lacks the word 'as' after than and hence rejected. In B, Vikings are known as 'farming' is totally absurd as people cannot be associated with an action noun and hence we are left with D.

(C) as for peacefully farming
(D) than as peaceful farmers
(E) as peaceful farmers

for me it is D - .........more often thought of in modern times as fierce............than as peaceful farmers
A - comparison issue, 'peaceful farmers' compare with 'as fierce'
B - changes meaning
C - same as B
E - idioms issue (..........more .........than......)

Answer D

more often....than is the correct idiomatic usage; so we can eliminate C & E.

A) We do not want to say that Vikings are more often thought of than peaceful farmers. Eliminate
B) more often is used before thought of...as... and not before "For bringing destruction to the far-flung langs..." if that was the case then option B would be correct.
D) Vikings are more often thought of in modern times as fierce, raiding warriors....than as peaceful farmers. Seems fine to me.

Before we look at answer options we know that it is a comparison. To maintain parallelism and consistency we need an option that start with <<than as>> followed by a noun/noun phrase.

(A) than peaceful farmers (incorrect)
(B) than for peacefully farming (incorrect)
(C) as for peacefully farming (incorrect)
(D) than as peaceful farmers (correct)
(E) as peaceful farmers (incorrect)

IMO Option D

"than peaceful farmers" needs to be in parallel with "as fierce, raiding warriors". And this needs to depict contrast rather than similar.
Correct way to do is "As X than as Y".
Only option D does that.
Vikings thought of as fierce, raiding warriors than as peaceful farmers.

(A) than peaceful farmers --> Incorrect.
(B) than for peacefully farming --> Incorrect.
(C) as for peacefully farming --> Incorrect.
(D) than as peaceful farmers --> Correct.
(E) as peaceful farmers --> Incorrect.

(A) than peaceful farmers
-than is correctly used
-'as' is missing - parallelism error
(B) than for peacefully farming
-than is correct
-parallelism error: it should be more often thought as X than as Y
(C) as for peacefully farming
-'than' is missing {correct idiomatic usage: more X than Y}
-for is incorrect too
(D) than as peaceful farmers
-than is correctly used
-as helps maintain the parallelism
(E) as peaceful farmers
- 'than' is required after the use of 'more' to avoid idiomatic error

The sentence is trying to convey to us that because Vikings' history was composed and passed down by non-Scandinavian sources, they are often perceived by the world as fierce and raiding warriors rather than as peaceful farmers.
The part about them bringing destruction to the lands in their longships is just a stretched out part of the sentence to confuse the reader on the actual parallelism structure of the sentence
The key to focus here is:
Vikings are more often thought of in modern times as fierce, raiding warriors(.......longships) THAN AS peaceful farmers

Only option D satisfies and maintains the intended meaning and parallelism structure of the sentence

Answer - D

(A) than peaceful farmers
(B) than for peacefully farming
(C) as for peacefully farming
(D) than as peaceful farmers
(E) as peaceful farmers

A, B, C are out as they have parallelism error. In E, "than" is missing. Hence, the correct answer is D.

The answer should be D.

Parallelism indicates more often thought of as...than as...
A does not contain "as" after "than"
B states "than for"- not parallel
C and E are incorrect because "more...as" is incorrect parallelism.

(A) than peaceful farmers - Comparison doesn't make sense.
(B) than for peacefully farming - "peaceful farming" cannot describe "farmers"
(C) as for peacefully farming - the correct idiom is "more.......than" . Also "peaceful farming" cannot describe farmers.
(D) than as peaceful farmers - Correct . Crisp and makes sense.
(E) as peaceful farmers - the correct idiom is "more.......than.

Methinks its D. :)

Do correct me if I am wrong.
