FYI. I am sending in questions to the GMAC in advance of the webinar. Let me know if anything else you would like asked or addressed.

Here are a few of the questions that GMAT Club community members have sent to us and we would appreciate if you could address them in your webinar today:

0. Whiteboards are seen as a significant hurdle esp. while GRE allows use of make shift whiteboards. Does GMAC have any plans for addressing this issue?
1. ID requirements (what if one has no access to passport while they are sheltering in place or expired passport). What are the ID requirements for the new test?

2. What if Power Goes out?
What happens if it is for several hours?
3. Online whiteboards is a really hard sell to test-takers. Are you expecting that test takers can effectively do their work on a virtual whiteboard? Are you modifying the test in any way?
4. Can one practice with a sample virtual whiteboard somewhere?

5. Will gmat prep tests be modified to allow the white boards?

6. Why can’t one cancel the score?
Seems strange along with a 7-day waiting period.
7. What happens if one has a touchscreen laptop? Are they disqualified or they have to avoid touching the screen?
8. Do you have to wait 16 days between online and regular GMAT tests?

bb can you ask them whether they will be addressing the odd no break between Q/V policy? Would they be willing to allow a 1-2 minute break to use the restroom / down some caffeine really quickly (or something like this)? Thanks for consolidating everything here, you have been super helpful!

Officially there’s no break between quant and verbal sections. This will even be true for the test with accommodations that may use 50% of 100% more time. I think about 4 1/2 hours without a break :-)

However, reports from the GRE at home have mentioned that improvised brakes are possible and while you may not leave the screen, you can at least relax. We will not know until we have a chance to take the actual GMAT online and have users share their experience.

Stay tuned for another five or so days to get a sense about the whole GMAT online experience.

Also, join us tomorrow, Friday at 11 AM Pacific / 2 PM Eastern for a recap YouTube live with GMATNinja, Maria from ApplicantLab, souvik101990, and workout.

We will touch on the best strategies to take the new GMAT online and the best strategy is to avoid it. We will also talk about options to switch to GRE and how easy or hard it may be for someone who has been preparing for the GMAT.

Hey guys,
Maybe this is a dumb question, but can someone tell me how to apply to Kellogg here given the situation of GMAT score waiver? I need help with exact details on what is required in the application.

Thank you in advance.

No idea, but I guess that you could easily get into their site and check how to apply? I believe is the same way than before.
They posted this: https://blogs.kellogg.northwestern.edu/i ... re-waiver/

Pablo

With this attitude towards test takers the GMAC is trying to make the GMAT irrelevant very quickly. If most top MBA programs decide to waive the exam this year, it will be a disaster for the GMAT's relevance and reputability. It might even be the first nail on its coffin. During the following years people all over the world might start questioning whether standardized admission tests as a whole have become obsolete and are an unnecessary barrier to admission.

I totally understand that the crisis we are living in makes everything complicated. But I was expecting a more cooperative solution from such a specialized company as the GMAC. Let's just hope that they announce some sensible adjustments on tomorrow's webinar.

ANSWERS FROM GMAC

I have posted this earlier on the forum and sent this in to the GMAC in advance of a webinar they were running to test prep companies and kindly invited me to. So here we go:

Q: Whiteboards are seen as a significant hurdle esp. while GRE allows use of make shift whiteboards. Does GMAC have any plans for addressing this issue?
GMAC is definitely aware of the issues and potentially challenges without using scratch paper. They appreciate the feedback BUT.... there are no plans to change the online whiteboard; this is the best solution at the moment and no indication of others even being considered. It sounded pretty final on the virtual whiteboard situation.

Q: ID requirements (what if one has no access to passport while they are sheltering in place or expired passport). What are the ID requirements for the new test?
ID requirements are unchanged. The ID will be checked and verified BEFORE the test and it must be current and approved form of ID. You cannot use expired or unapproved forms of ID

Q: What if Power Goes out? What happens if it is for several hours?
It appears GMAC is well prepared to this type of a situation and if power or connection go out, they have contingency plans to restart the test or to reschedule it. You will be able to learn more in tomorrow's GMAC webinar more details

Q: Online whiteboards is a really hard sell to test-takers. Are you expecting that test takers can effectively do their work on a virtual whiteboard? Are you modifying the test in any way?
No plans to modify or make any kind of adjustment to the test. The test will be the same questions, same material, same everything except of course no AWA but there are no changes being made (well... other than the crazy whiteboard addition) to make the test in any way easier/different/more palatable. Do not expect questions to be any easier or scores to be any higher or any kind of a curve. There will not be adjustments. The test will be consistently scored.

Q: Can one practice with a sample virtual whiteboard somewhere?
A: No but GMAC is working on providing more information about the online whiteboard. (not sure what this means but they did not commit to having a practice one). At the same time, GMAT Club will be coming out with our own version of the Virtual whiteboard that will be matched to the official one as closely as possible. It should be available on Sat April 25th. Stay tuned for details.

Q: Will gmat prep tests be modified to allow the white boards?
A: Does not seem so but they did not answer this question directly.

Why can’t one cancel the score? Seems strange along with a 7-day waiting period.
A: It is not clear why there is no way to cancel the score. They took and answered the question but it was vague. It seems they had to build a whole different system for the GMAT Online and canceling scores was not an option. About the 7-day waiting period, scores will be available at the LATEST 7 days later, but most likely they will be available a lot sooner.

Q: What happens if one has a touchscreen laptop? Are they disqualified or they have to avoid touching the screen?
A: No answer was given but they did confirm that one can use a mouse. They also confirmed that stylus and drawing pads are not allowed

Q: Do you have to wait 16 days between online and regular GMAT tests?
A: GMAC did not take/answer this question but my understanding is that there is no waiting period.

Other Interesting Information:
The score reporting systems are not integrated at this time so if you order an old score report for a school, it may not include the new score for a while or the new score may not include your old scores (it was not super clear and I will clarify when I listen to the recording).

That's it folks.

We will be covering the details of the new GMAT Online and how to best handle it and also options such as switching to the GRE at Home (you can take GRE multiple times by the way and use a real whiteboard/dry erase pad)

Whiteboard or not, let's do this! At least the GMAT is my job, so the $200 test fee counts as a business expense. I'll report back on the GMAT Online and let you know how it goes. (Test Date: Wednesday 4/22)

I hope that tomorrow's webinar goes well!

One question which I haven't seen answered yet is whether the virtual whiteboard will cover the question fully or if it is possible to have it open and at the same time see the question. Would make a huge difference whether you need to open and close the whiteboard to just re-read the question

Thanks and yes, please keep us posted on your experience after you take the test. The more personal anecdotes we have from people doing this, the better.

Commenting on the debrief posted by bb, I do not buy GMAC's statement that this will be an exam that is 100% similar to those that are administered in test centers - they will surely have to make the Quant sections more mental math friendly and/or curve the test to account for people missing way more answers than usual (due to the online whiteboard), otherwise they certainly run the risk of having two non-comparable tests (i.e., a 700 on the Online GMAT might be just as difficult to obtain as a 720-730 on the normal GMAT, which is not what GMAC is trying to promote, I believe).

This was asked to the GMAC and they provided an answer/clarification:

You will be able to resize the whiteboard and move it to be able to see both the question and the whiteboard simultaneously. Whiteboard is not transparent however.

I am just sharing what GMAC has said in an early webinar they did. It is surprising for me to hear that from them as well. But that is what they said and my goal is to communicate with the least amount of distortion so there is no opinion included :-)

bb I'm fully aware you're just transcribing the conversation, not expecting you to opine nor am I trying to rip on you. I am just making my own inference on their response in saying the Online GMAT won't be different to the normal GMAT :) thank you for collecting all of this info from them!

A badly conceived strategy by GMAC and even ill-prepared implementation of it.

For sure they will not be a case study in BSs or maybe yes

"Resilience and preparedness - How to stay well behind the curve. GMAC case study"

The title is promising

If we are not allowed to cancel the at-home GMAT scores, does this mean business schools will be able to see both scores if we choose to take it again at a test center?
