Hey,

I took my last practice CAT (GMATprep free CAT #1) last Saturday, about 3 days ago (today is Tuesday). My exam is next Monday. I want to take a full practice CAT (free #2), if only to practice my timing (as I've been reading great strategies on Quant timing) so I don't run out of time on the section on my actual exam.

Since I work full time, I was planning on taking the full CAT on Saturday, leaving 2 days to recover for my full exam but not letting myself get rusty. Do you think it might be better then to only practice the Quant and Verbal components (and disregard the essay and IR of CAT #2)? Or do you really feel I should not take a CAT 2 days before my exam?

Thanks for all your help!!

Hi Jayy2jayy2,

The process of taking (and reviewing) a CAT requires a significant amount of energy and effort - and takes time to 'recover' from. This is one of the reasons why you typically shouldn't take more than 1 CAT per week. By extension, taking a FULL CAT two days before your Official GMAT is likely NOT a good idea - as you would run the risk of 'burn out' - and that is something that you would want to avoid. In these last week, you should keep your studies light, get in some review and try to get some extra rest. You'll be better served by going into Test Day calm and ready to work.

1) When did you take your last practice CAT? And how did you score (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores)?

Hi Jayy2jayy2,

If your goal is to experience a 'realistic-enough' practice run at the GMAT, then skipping the Essay and IR sections will NOT provide you with that experience. On Test Day, you'll be at the Testing Facility for over an hour before you begin your first Quant question - and THAT time/effort has to be accounted for during your practice, otherwise you'll just be taking a shorter, easier Test and ending up with an unrealistic experience/score result. While you clearly 'want' to take that last CAT, there will likely be no benefit in doing so at this point - and a definite chance at doing some harm in the process.
