From previous HBS waitlist discussion...

Tbh, I have the least hope with HBS waitlist. The chance is extremely slim. I mean who in their right minds would turn down an offer from HBS, except for those who are offered full scholarships at other top institutions?

Onto round 2

Could be wrong here but logically, I don't think the waitlist (particularly in Round 1) is fully correlated to yield. They know what the yield probably is going to be (~90%) so they'll adjust the number of targeted admits. So for example, R1 (probably) has something like 4,000 applicants - they interviewed ~25% (1,000) and they know they might want to enroll 40-50% of the class through R1 - that means the total admits will be ~500 (let's say). So of that targeted ~500, they might give out 400 - 450 admits, and then waitlist 75 - 100 based on what they see in the R2 applicant pool. Of course could be wrong.

Anyways, fingers crossed but onto R2.

Yes, would confirm this to be true. Not related to yeild - chances of getting off largely relate to expectation vs. reality of on quality of R2 group.

However, would recommend you do some ruthless self-examination with your profile and app materials, and prepare a strategy to get off WL.

Regarding the earlier comment, tiny number of people turn down HBS for full-ride at another top 5 school (as HBS does not offer merit scholarships.)

I dont know, this one doesn't seem relevant to HBS given their subtle "no contact" policy. Found this one a little more comforting:

Being put on the HBS waitlist sucks. I would know. It happened to me.

It actually happened to me at Wharton and Stanford as well. Around this time of year I was searching for things I could have done better: better recommenders? more work experience? a STEM degree? (so stupid for choosing the humanities!). But then when doing some work on political campaigns and researching the way candidates use personal stories to connect with voters on a powerful emotional level, I realized what I forgot to include: a compelling personal narrative.

What I did was use my waitlist letters as a second chance to introduce myself, this time using the principles of public narrative that are used by politicians -- defining what a "vote for them" really means, and making their voters feel like they are making the world a better place by mobilizing to support them. In the end, I got into all three schools and matriculated at Harvard.

If there is any advice I can give you it is this:
1. DO NOT STAY SILENT. You can ask the adcom (I did) and they will tell you that silence is suicide.
2. MOUNT A CAMPAIGN. Just as in politics, there are techniques for good campaigns and bad campaigns. Here are 7 Steps for Mounting an Effective Waitlist Campaign

I don't think they will contact applicants nor provide any kind of update before the week of 1/22.
So, we'll have to bite our nails to bleeding for another 2 weeks  :dazed

I don't think so because HBS says the following:

Quote:
We expect that interview invitations for Round 2 will be issued in late January. Interviews will be conducted throughout February and in early March. All of the necessary details will be in the interview invitation.
"Not moving forward" means that we are unable to admit you. We want you to be able to move ahead with other plans so we will send these decisions out in late January.

Of course not  I got that message and I'm with the others, stressing about that response expected to come towards the end of January.
In your case, when you say you heard around Jan 7, are you talking about R1 or R2? I think this is where the confusion might be coming from...

got it, i am in the waitlist post-interview. Our timing is different. Jan 7 relates to post-interview waitlist update as per last year’s blog post

Got ya. Makes sense. Do you recall how long you had to wait for post submission to hear back from HBS?
Was it via email or was it a phone call?
Last but not least, I've heard the deposit requirement from the schools can create a mess when you're on the waitlist of your preferred one. Did you experience this? I'm curious to know what the timings look like.
