$$6x + 4y - 12 = 2x$$
$$4x + 4y = 12$$

$$x + y = 3$$

2x = 6x + 4y - 12

4x + 4y = 12

4(x + y) = 12

x + y = 3.

Solution

Given:
• 2x is 12 less than the sum of 6x and 4y

To find:
• The value of (x + y)

Approach and Working:
As it is given that 2x is 12 less than the sum of 6x and 4y, we can write this in the equation form as
• 2x = (6x + 4y) – 12

Simplifying the equation, we get
• 4x + 4y = 12
Or, x + y = 3

Hence, the correct answer is option C.

We need the value of the expression $$(x+y)$$

One equation. Two variables. We cannot isolate $$x$$ or $$y$$. Do not try to express one variable in terms of another in order to substitute.

Instead, write the equation. Key: simplify or manipulate the equation until the expression is isolated.

In English, "less than" and "more than" are algebraically backwards.

"12 less than [something]" means
"[something], less 12" =
"[something] - 12"

Whatever comes AFTER the word "than" is the quantity that gets changed, the [something] from which 12 is subtracted.

2x is 12 less than [the sum of 6x and 4y]
2x = [6x + 4y], less 12
2x = 6x + 4y - 12
12 = 4x + 4y
We need (x + y), so divide by 4
3 = (x + y)

6x+4y-2x=12
4x+4y=12
so x and y must be 1 and 2 or vice versa
1+2=3
