If |3x| > |4y|, is x > y?

(1) x > 0

(2) y > 0

Hi,
I would do this Q in the following way and do believe it to be simpler..

given |3x| > |4y|...
what can we say about the values of x and y..
we can easily see that the absolute value of x > absolute value of y or lxl>lyl and x is non zero...
following four states are possible..
i) both x and y are +ive.... x>y
ii) both x and y are -ive.... x<y
iii) x is +ive and y is -ive.... x>y
iv) x is -ive and y is +ive.... x<y...

now lets look at the statements..
(1) x > 0 ...
as we can see from i) and iii) above, x>y if x > 0 , irrespective of value of y..
suff..

(2) y > 0..
it can be seen from i) and iv) that even if y>0, value of x is required..
insuff

ans B

Soln: |3x| > |4y|, or 3*|x| > 4*|y| (since |A*B|=|A|*|B|; |3|=3, and |4|=4)
or 34|x| > |y|, or |x| > |y| (if 3/4th of a is greater than b; a must also be greater than b, when a & b both +ve).

1. x>0. suppose x = 5. So, |y| < 5, or -5 < y < 5.
So, we see all the value of y must be less than x=5. or x>y. SUFFICIENT.

2. y>0. Suppose y = 5. So, |x| > 5. The range of x is thus: x > 5, or x < -5. In other words, x > y or x < -y. NOT SUFFICIENT.

Answer: A.
