Made a silly error initially and divided 2.8$ by 5.

In a 3 mile ride, the cost of 1st 0.2 mile is $1.

Remaining is 2.8 miles. No of 0.2 miles in 2.8 miles is 14 and each of these costs 0.2$. So total is 1+ 14*0.2 = $3.8.

This cannot be correct? If 1st 1/5 = $1, and 1/5ths thereafter = .20, with 14 1/5s left of the trip the cost would simply be 14 x .20 + 1.00.. no?

Since 0.2 mile costs 1 USD then we need to find the cost of (3-0.2 =2.8 miles)


0.2 = 0.2
2.8 = x

Cross multiply and get 2.8 USD

so 1 +2.8 = 3.8


Optionally one can apply logic (though i dont know what logic means )

there are FIVE 20 cents in one dollar

so the first 0.2 mile cost 1 USD, thereafter we are left with 14 (0.2*14 =2.8)

2.8+1 = 3.8

Yep silly mistake! 14/5 miles left, which means 14 times cost of 1/5 miles which is 14*0.2 = 2.8

BTW, dave13, there's nothing wrong with 3 miles = (15/5) miles!

For first 1/5 miles = $1. fixed.
total mile = 3
no of mile left = 3 - 1/5 = 14 / 5 .

Now we have to find out how many 1/5 lies in 14/5. to do so we need to divide 14 / 5 .

(14/5) / 1/5 = 14.

14*0.2 = 2.8

Total = 2.8 + 1 = 3.8.

The best answer is D.

as you can see, first 0.2 is priced at $1, other 4 |0.2| (remaining) are priced at $0.2 each, giving us, 0.2*4 = $0.8 + $1 = $1.8
Next 2 miles can divided into

3rd mile |0.2|....|0.2|...|0.2|....|0.2|...|0.2|

therefore, their respective price will be 0.2*5 = $1
and
