Hi Tahutempe,

IMD MBA students typically have between 4 to 9 years of work experience and the age range goes from 27 to 34. This does not mean that, if you are outside the range, you cannot be accepted to the MBA program, but you will need to provide a strong GMAT score to show the AdCom that you'll be able to keep up academically along with a very compelling application that highlights an extraordinary career progression and a realistic need for an MBA at this point in your career.

In my experience, as a rule of thumb, IMD encourages prospects with 10+ years of work experience to apply to its EMBA program instead. The average age of the class is 40 years.

In any case, before you decide whether to apply or not to the Full-Time MBA Program, I think it would be good for you to share your profile with IMD and have it assessed. IMD has a "mini-application" called Assess your Chances. You can find it here: https://www.imd.org/mba/admissions/one- ... -criteria/

I hope this helps.

Thank you very much.

Warm regards
Alex

Hi Alex,
Thank you very much for your insight.
I submitted once my CV to a B-school in EU for pre-assesment. Its Feedback was i was too technical and it is not suited for its EMBA program. I understand that, but that's why I wanna pursue EMBA.
In general, is There any Big gap in Curriculum between MBA and EMBA?
best regards and thank you

Hi Tahutempe,

EMBA programs are usually targeted to executives and managers who want to advance within their company or industry. So, the main focus of the program is on sharpening leadership skills and building more rounded business acumen, and recruitment is not a priority.

If your career only involves technical roles as an individual contributor and you are looking for a career change, then an EMBA might not be suited for you.

So, you could try Full-Time MBA Programs. Early this year, I worked with a client who was 37 and she was accepted to her target MBA program in Europe, so it is definitely possible to be accepted even in your mid-30's.

I hope this helps.

Thank you very much.

Hi Kurathore,

thanks for sharing your profile.

If in your next GMAT attempt, you are able to score 720-730, then you could have good chances at IMD.

I particularly like your international experience in the US. This will give you an edge over Indian applicants with limited international experience.

I would be very interested in seeing how you have progressed over the 8 years at Deloitte. How many times have you been promoted? Are you currently in a position where you have people management responsibilities? Feel free to share your resume with me (alex@arleeconsulting.com).

Thank you very much.

Hi Kurathore,

Your profile is quite good with work-experience being the highlight of your profile. You have displayed constant progression in your career which is very attractive from the point of view of the admission committees. The fact that you have led teams is another indispensable part of your profile. Let us take the evaluation of your profile step by step.

Determining fit to the school: Your GMAT score of 690 is good when compared to the average score of the class at IMD which is 680. Apart from that, the average work-ex of the class stands at 7. Yours again trumps it easily. More than 50% of students at IMD have led teams in past. Your outstanding work-experience fits you well within the culture of the school.

Highlight: Your presidential tenure at Rotaract at the college level supports your ECs very well. It also says that you must have developed leadership capabilities at a very early stage. Try to highlight the motivations behind your different community involvements and communicate the respective impacts.

However, what I find missing here is a mention of your hobbies or interests. Talking about the things you're passionate about and which helped make you a better person in any way provides a different insight to the adcoms and make the apps interesting (the most overlooked and at the same time important aspect). For your work-ex, the biggest strengths I find is a big name in the CV, your considerable leadership experiences and the global exposure you have had. Bank on them.

Relevant Recommendations: I suggest you keep your options open. You have a very specialised and distinguished profile. As you have said you are scoring around 730 in your tests. You can consider applying to US schools as well. Even at your current GMAT score, you can look at Rotman, INSEAD, Ivey, Said, and Haas as well. INSEAD may perfectly fall in line with your long-term strategic consulting role as a major chunk of the class joins the industry after the course.

But I must point out that I’m having trouble connecting your strategic-consulting goal with your work-ex. You’ll have to come up with a proper explanation for your interest and connect the dots accordingly.

Feel free to tap us if you have any query or if you need any help in understanding and shortlisting the schools. I will be very glad to assist you in your MBA journey.

Book a free session as per your convenience.

I’ll be more than happy to assist you in your journey.

Cheers!

Re: IMD Profile Evaluation - Tools for B-School Profile Evaluation [#permalink]
Hi, please assess my below profile. Any suggestion or criticism is most welcome!
Target - IMD class of 2022

Indian Male, 27 years old

Education: B Tech (Electronics & Telecom) + MBA Technology Management (5 year integrated course from NMIMS), CGPA 3.18 / 4

GMAT: 670 (Q 47, V 34) (will be retaking once, but not expecting more than 720)

Work experience:
Total 4.5 years of full-time work experience working for major banks in trade management and product control teams (as of Dec 2020).

Current Job (Major IB) - 1.5 years as Senior Analyst as Product Controller for Product Variants and New Businesses for Fixed Income Products. Have been involved in some major deals that made news headlines (corporate acquisitions, infrastructure projects as well as lending to governments and central banks). Also in-charge of the training protocol and training new employees for my team. Led 2 employees. (No promotion, 1 award)

Previous Job (Major KPO for another major IB) - 3 years with a global trade management team for another big bank for equity linked notes. Also worked for Business Development and client engagement. Led some cross-team training initiatives. Led 2 employees (2 promotions, 3 awards).

In 2020, I have co-founded a new business focused on sourcing and supplying advanced building materials as well as providing design consultancy services for government and private infrastructure projects. The firm is still in its nascent-stage with only 5 employees and working on some promising deals expected to materialize in early 2021.

High international exposure in both my job roles, as I speak with traders, sales, ops teams from all geographies (all continents except Antarctica). However, have never lived and worked outside India for extended period of time. Other than that, internship experience in manufacturing (Hindustan National Glass), Telecom (Tata Teleservices) and BFSI (Siemens Financial Services) industries. Also, started and ran a profitable late night food delivery service in final year of college.

Community:

Currently, I am an LGBTQ+ ally at current employer and volunteered to help a social start-up prepare an investment pitch and improve operational efficiency.
Was a volunteer for the local CSR chapter for previous employer and organized tree-plantation drives, garbage segregation drives, and recycling workshops. Was able to increase participation by 200% in 2 months by changing the way we promoted our activities.

Post-MBA Goals:
Short term: 1) A leadership development program / multi-functional / strategy role in any conglomerate, OR 2) Consulting
Long Term: 1) Lead a Geography / Business Unit / Function for a conglomerate, OR 2) Use the knowledge, exposure and network to grow a self-owned business

Other:
I was born in a village and grew up in small towns and big cities all over India. I speak 8 languages (including French and Spanish). You can say I bring the rural, small-town, metro as well as the multi-national perspectives. I have a lot of extra-curricular activities from school and college, but no outstanding achievements (i.e. no national level medals, just school/college level prizes). I play the guitar (rather well), and love hiking and trekking.

I already have an MBA degree, but going for the 2nd MBA anyway because the previous MBA was through a straight-out-of-high-school course with the batch having very limited experience and diversity.
Why IMD? Because of the strong focus on industry and leadership, and the growing reputation in entrepreneurship. Also, the small batch size and the teaching style appeals very much to me.

Hi @AshShri,

Your profile looks quite impressive to me. Your GMAT is on par with the IMD average. If you may achieve a 700+ score, it can definitely add considerable value to your profile. But even if not, I believe you can crack the admissions with your current profile. To make you more confident in your skin, we recently have helped an Indian engineer with a 690 score get into LBS with 100% scholarship.

Your post-MBA goals seem a great fit to IMD. Most IMD graduates pursued Functional or Corporate management opportunities in industrial and service companies.

As for IMD, it looks for the following values in a candidate's profile:

1. Academic and Professional Excellence
2. Experienced, Mature and globally-minded participants who want to make a difference.
3. Clear vision

I can see 1 & 2 in your profile. You clearly have had huge impacts on the companies you've worked for with considerable leadership experience. Your multi-functional role has helped you develop business acumen, important to realise your long-term goals. Your ECs are very strong in themselves bringing forward the competitiveness and intellectual prowess in you. Your strength is great international exposure combined with a diverse domestic experience. Bank on it to frame your post-MBA goals. Demonstrate how your current startup and your industry knowledge can impact the Indian infrastructure industry and how it can break into the international market.

Also, I am keen to know the industry you want to enter post-MBA. You should have a clear vision of what lies ahead and of your desire and capacity to play a part in shaping the future of our world. You seem quite interested in IMD. Do exhibit this in your essays as the genuine interest of candidates to a school is very attractive from the point of view of the admission committees and can help you present a strong case.

Overall, I feel you present a strong profile and with a solid application strategy, you may crack IMD. Also, which other schools are you eyeing? You should consider INSEAD and HEC as these can also be a great fit for your profile and post-MBA goals.

Feel free to hop on a free consultation call to discuss other target schools you can consider and your application strategy. I will be more than happy to assist you in your MBA journey.

Cheers!

Re: IMD Profile Evaluation - Tools for B-School Profile Evaluation [#permalink]
Hi guys,

I would like to get my profile evaluated. Just wanted to get an idea about what GMAT score should I aim for to get admission in IMD and whether there is any scope for a scholarship.

Profile

Indian Male (28) – Lawyer - Targeting to join 2023-24 batch

Education Background:

10th: 87%
12th: 91%

Undergrad: Five Years Law Degree - Bachelors of Legal Sciences LLB (BLS LLB) (57%/100%) from the University of Mumbai. However, one needs to take into account that the highest score is around 70% and most of the students fall in 60%-65%.

Though my college (Government Law College, Mumbai) is consistently ranked amongst the top ten law schools in India, it is known only for its name. It doesn't have good faculty and attendance is also not compulsory. However, it gives the flexibility to join a law firm from the second or third year onwards as an intern/paralegal. Therefore, I continued to work as a paralegal/professional support lawyer in India's top 3 law firms during my college and specialized in the field of Competition Law (when I was not even taught this subject in the college).

Please Note: Students with 62% marks or between 60-65% from the University of Mumbai also get admitted to Harvard Law School (along with many other top US and European law schools) every year from my college.
During my college days, I was involved in a number of extra-curricular activities such as being a member of different societies/clubs, participating and winning moot courts/model united nations and writing and publishing research articles, and winning essay competitions.

Job profile:

Around 4 Years - working as a Competition Lawyer with 2 of India's leading law firms.

During this time, I was involved in India-specific filing of global M&A transactions such as Monsanto/Bayer, TPG/Intel, JSW/Apollo/Monnet, and other high-value deals such as Vodafone/Idea. I was also part of matters involving then ongoing cartel investigations esp. auto-parts cartel leniency cases as well as paper cartel investigation and abuse of dominance matters including cases involving Google, Uber etc. I have also represented many private equity players such as Temasek, CDPQ, Brookfield, Baring, Chryscapital, Carlyle, KKR, Warburg Pincus.

I have worked with small teams since only 3 to 4 people are required on a transaction/case, however, I have handled multiple matters at a time and ended up working with different people/teams simultaneously. Further, during a 2-year period I was the sole person handling this area of law, doing all the work from the scratch, getting involved in business development activities to pitch new clients, and single point of contact for the entire organization to reach out for any assistance related to my work.

I have continued to publish (extensively researched) articles and online blogs on my area of specialization during this period.

Other Information:

In mid-2020, I suffered from serious health issues and I had to give up my career for some time to avail proper treatment and get better. This took me around a year to recover (mid-2020 to mid-2021). During this time, I continued my research work related to my field of specialization and I also did part-time modeling. Subsequently, I decided to change my field of profession but wasn't sure what should I opt for. This was long overdue as I realized that while I am passionate about my work, it doesn’t seem very significant/challenging and can’t become the purpose of my life. This can’t be something I would like to do for the rest of my life.

During the last 6-7 months, I have been assisting my dad who has his own CA practice on tax litigation and related matters. I also went through professional counseling trying to figure out what I would like to pursue and I also did my own research (including going through job profiles on LinkedIn and what are the essential educational qualifications). Based on this, I have decided to pursue MBA and I am planning to apply to IMD, LBS at least for now. I am thinking but not sure whether to apply to INSEAD or not. I am not planning for US business schools since they are too expensive and have a 2-year program.

Please let me know your thoughts on my chances of getting admitted to some top business schools including IMD.

Thanks in advance.

I read your profile as -
"Over-represented demo, Lawyer, average university, below-average grade, 4+ WE in local companies"

"Why MBA" and "Why XYZ school" is the most important factor of an application. All those things you mentioned are secondary. MIT Sloan, Darden, Ross, Tepper, etc do not need a GMAT if you can convince them with your essay.

Almost all MBA programs are unique, but IMD is totally different. The class size is approx 90. The main focus of IMD Adcom is the uniqueness of each participant and diversity. Here is a simple checklist -

1. Country - The chances of getting admitted are more if you come from an under-represented country, such as Malawi, Mongolia, Samoa. If you come from an over-represented country such as India, China, the US, the chances of getting admitted will be less.
2. Educational & Professional Background - Engineers, CA, Lawyers, Consultants have tough competition. Astronauts can get it easily.
3. Language - If you speak the language of the country where the school is located, the chances are better. Please note that IMD prefers multilingual applicants. If you speak French (or German), your profile is good.
4. Entrepreneurship - If you started your own business, it is well regarded.
5. International Work Exposure - If you work in different cultures, you are ready to handle diversity.
6. Social Impact - If you did something significant for the world, you may get any of the top MBA without GMAT or other requirements.
7. Academics - If you are from tier-1 colleges (In India - IITs, IIMs, AIIMS, NLSUI, DU etc), you are considered a good student. Moreover, CGPA below 3 would hamper the chance of getting an interview call.
8. Test Score - IMD does not care much about GMAT. The minimum is 630 and the median is 680.
9. Work Experience - The average work experience is 7 years, while Indians at IMD have greater WE than average. If you are an employee of a Fortune 100 company you may get some advantages.
10. Reference - If alumni refer you to IMD, it will be beneficial. A few schools take alumni referral very seriously - IMD is one of these.
11. Personal Background - Many schools, esp schools from the US, give benefits to first-graduation graduates. I am not sure how much IMD values it.
12. Extra-curriculars - If you did something significant apart from your education and profession. It does not impact much, but still, it can help you stand out from all applicants. However, activities such as playing sports at school or participating in toastmaster will not help at all.

Measuring your profile with the above parameters, you can predict your chance at IMD.

You might a chance at INSEAD and LBS if you get 740+. For IESE and HEC, you can target 720+. That too, when you take help from a good consultant. You need to bring other aspects of yourself - not only as a Lawyer. The Adcom wants to know who you really are. If your academics and profession are removed from your profile, what else is remaining. At this moment, I can suggest you have a premium profile evaluation from a Top Consultant. It might cost you around 12-20k INR, but it is quite useful.

Hi

I am looking to apply to IMD's Jan 2023 intake. My professional, personal and academic details are as below:

Nationality:Indian
Age:31
Undergrad GPA: 2.49/4.00 (from BITS Pilani - one of the top 6-8 engineering schools in india with an acceptance rate of ~1.2%)
Postgraduate GPA: 2.8/4.00 (from IIFT Delhi - one of the top 15 b schools in India) (was in the top 0.5 percentile in the entrance test) (have multiple straight A in Finance subjects)
GMAT: 710 (q49,v38)
CFA level 1 with distinction in all subject areas tested.

Work Experience: 7 years of work experience across the social sector, venture capital, front-end finance and banking, and finally in Financial Technology.

1.2 years as a full-time Teach for India fellow teaching kids in an under-resourced and low-income community in Pune, India.
2.1 year as an Analyst at a Venture capital firm
3.Management Trainee then Manager and finally Senior Manager at one of the largest private banks in India (hired straight out of b school as part of a selective leadership development program of the bank). Role in front-end securities trading, structuring, valuation etc. Considerable interaction with overseas corporate clients, both Indian and MNCs. Have handles businesses/deals of the order of 100 to 500 million $.Obtained the highest possible performance rating for three consecutive years (basically every year I was with the bank) and promoted twice in as many years.
4.Currently, a fintech product manager at one of India's largest online investment platforms. Managing product strategy, customer interactions, user experience, etc

Other Information:
1. Nominated for the Economic Times Young leaders award by my previous employer.
2. Rally driver for Mahindra Adventure in the amateur category.
3. Leadership position in multiple student bodies, clubs and organizing committees at BITS Pilani.
4.Part of the team that brought Tedx to BITS pilani for the first time.
5. Distinction holding painter in school.

My specific question: Considering my low cgpa, I realise that my GMAT should be as high as possible. Is a 710 sufficient to somewhat negate the impact of the low under-grad CGPA ? Because if it is not then I will have to re-attempt the test. However, going for a re-attempt will result in missing the Round 2 deadline of IMD and because I am from an over-represented applicant pool I believe it is not advisable to apply in a later round. Further, there is no guarantee that I will score in the 740+ range in my second re-attempt although I am confident I have fairly high chances of doing so.

Taking into account all of the above should I chose an earlier application round + a bit lower gmat score OR re-attempt and go for a later round with the new score (provided I do better in my re-attempt) ? Any expert advice will be highly valuable

I have no idea how did you convert your CGPA. There is no need of converting this on a scale of 4, at least not for IMD.
IMO, your profile is competitive for IMD. Considering the small class size of IMD, it is almost impossible to say if anyone considers IMD as a safe school. However, there is no harm in increasing your GMAT score, it may help in other schools and scholarships. The deadline for R1 is already passed and for R2 is on 1-May. There is enough time to revise concepts for GMAT and reappear for it.

Re: IMD Profile Evaluation - Tools for B-School Profile Evaluation [#permalink]
Hello,
Thanks for starting this thread! I am decided to start application for an MBA (preferably in Europe, but I am open to consider other locations). My prospects are IMD, HEC and IE for 2023 intake, but I also considering Mannheim or WHU for 2022 intake (I am not very convinced with the idea to wait for 2023- Aug/Sep intake). Please kindly check my profile and give me some feedback.

Background and nationality:
31 years old male, Peruvian, with 5 years of work experience in engineering and business development.

Undergrad Information:
BS Mechanical Engineering from National University of Engineering of Peru- GPA: 3.0
BS Industrial Engineering from National University of Engineering of Peru- GPA > 3.5 (1st place in the class)

GMAT:
720 (Q-51 V-36 IR-8 AWA-4)

Work experience and leadership:
-Asset Maintenance Trainee in a hands-on experience internship at field operations for an International Oil Company – 01 year
-Assistant for an independent consultant on management and processes – 1.5 years (while studying my second major)
-Product Specialist for a small B2B company that sales machinery – 6 months (transition to commercial area)
-Business Development Analyst in a global company (machinery manufacturer)- 02 years //Currently
-Indirect Sales Responsible as an acting role in the same company listed above – 01 year //Currently
-Entrepreneur with an e-commerce startup founded by me and a group of friends – 01 year //Currently

Regarding leadership experience, I have not yet held a job position with some staff in charge or a middle-management position. I struggled with the process of career turning from engineering to commercial management (I stopped to work for a whole year to take the junior classes of my second major). However, as I am doing well in my current job position, they gave the opportunity to lead the strategy implementation of indirect sales which includes to plan, start and monitoring relationships with business partners and distributors. Also, as CEO of my own startup, I have to lead a team of 04 people and drive the company to a next level (Although is a small company, I am learning many valuable lessons of leadership)

Community:
- 05 years of volunteer in TECHO, an NGO that focus on poverty alleviation in Latam.
- Leader of many projects launched by TECHO for the construction of emergency houses in poor urban communities in Peru.
- Member of the TECHO’s delegation for humanitarian aid during the national emergency caused by natural disaster called “Fenomeno del Niño” (2017).
- Leader of the team of digitalization of data of poor urban communities to help people in need during the pandemic caused by Covid-19 (2020)

International exposure
I have not worked or studied abroad. However, because I work for a global corporation, I usually coordinate with people from different nationalities.

Post MBA goals:
1) Joining a global corporation as a leading role in business development, strategy, or marketing. It could be a company in the same industry of my current company (machinery) but I am open to explore another industries such as tech or e-commerce.
2) Joining a startup or founding mine (This is something I have been considering during the last year as a result of my entrepreneur experience)
