Hie would like an assessment of my profile for INSEAD(I already got into my other target schools ISB and Rotman this year, however exploring a wider alumni network )

PROFILE : 26 years old Indian female engineer with 4 years of experience in largest private oil and gas company in India.

Bachelors of Chemical Engineering from Institute of Chemical Technoloy Mumbai (Best in Chem Engg in India) with GPA above 3.5 and gmat of 720

Work experience - 2 years in plant operations and shift supervision managing all male team of 25. Worked as chief of staff to the President of Operations for 1 year and then moved to strategy and planning, looking after long term strategy and competitive advantage of company, a major M&A deal to reduce debt and industry breakthrough projects in India.
Will be promoted soon in 2 months.

Extra curricular- Progression from Volunteer,Mentor and Ambassador for a global NGO advocating diversity in STEM fields. Toastmaster leadership and membership experience. Love writing poetry and Journaling

A lot of leadership positions during college. Founder of TEDX at my institute, worked in entrepreneurship before my corporate job, devising the marketing plan for a sustainable foods company with operations in India and Africa.

Post MBA: help traditional energy companies transition to renewable space in corporate strategy role (own company willing to fund mba). Need financial skills to understand other part of strategy and new investments. How it will affect the performance of the company in years to come. Long term goal- startup in renewable space/solar power as it is yet to pick up in india, identify a lot of potential for standalone residences

Skeptical that I m a bit lower on
International exposure as i have worked with clients from MENA region but no foreign field experience. Other than that Spent childhood and did high school in gulf.

May take up French soon purely as hobby.

Hi UdishaSingh,

I believe you are on the right track as regards career growth. For 2 years' work experience, you are doing reasonably well- leading a team, gaining client exposure as well as working in global teams. All of these are important criteria for b-schools such as INSEAD, LBS, Cambridge and HEC.

Adding another year's experience on the same growth trajectory is going to do wonders to your profile. I think you will be a much stronger candidate next year and your profile will be more aligned to your target b-schools that have an average class profile of 5 years experience. The additional year will give you the chance to improve your GMAT score as well.

Another area you could work upon is your extracurricular activities. Both INSEAD and LBS ask questions on what your interests and ECAs are, and I see from the profile description above that this aspect is a little weak.

Hi Abi1995,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Your profile looks good on the surface. Starting with stats, your undergrad GPA is quite low, but your good GMAT will compensate for it. So, this part is pretty sorted for you. On the work front, you have some global recognition in your profile which should give you an edge. Working at Saint Gobain and Amazon must bring some leadership experience and impact. You have achieved award which exhibit your potential to perform well. In all the roles and organizations, you truly have pulled off your roles, which is evident from your career achievements. So, your work experience is good, but here's the catch, you'll be competing against the same pool of candidates, so why should adcom consider you? So, it is critical to frame your narrative and application in a way that will set you apart from the pool. You have also worked at a startup, which may be utilized to your benefit to demonstrate impact if you can bring out some instances about how you contributed to the same since b-schools look for 'Impact' in one's profile. About your ECs, I can see elements of leadership and involvement in NGO. You can share your motivation behind joining this NGO as it’s really different.

Your post-MBA goals require more clarity. Try to connect it to your previous work experience and divide it into short-term and long-term goals. If there are obviously particular skills or concepts that you know you'll need but that your background lacks, emphasizing these specific gaps that will help you on your journey will make a strong essay. Because your GMAT is strong, you have a high possibility of receiving a scholarship. It also depends on your overall profile, I would like to learn about your profile in length to answer this better. We have helped one of our applicants to get into LBS with a 690 GMAT score and 100% scholarship.

Overall a good profile and have shot at your targeted b-schools if you are able to bring a unique story. Do a lot of brainstorming in terms of how YOU are different from the pool and deserve that seat of a particular b-school and will be able to contribute UNIQUELY to the community. If you need any guidance over your profile, feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Hello UdishaSingh,

Thank you for your post. It is great to see that you have had strong management experience and a promotion in your 2 years as a Data Science Consultant. While you are on the younger side in terms of work experience, this leadership helps strengthen your candidacy. Additionally, consultants often apply to business school earlier on because consulting is a great industry for gaining strong pre-MBA experience and exposure.

Keep in mind that consulting is a competitive field with many MBA applicants. Because of this, you have your work cut out for you to distinguish yourself from your peers in your applications. Business schools look for well-rounded classes so it is crucial that your application tells a solid story about who you are and how you will add unique value on campus. Your extracurriculars will certainly help demonstrate this, as should your personal story.

Personal story development is one of the key components of Personal MBA Coach's services and continues to be the area where we find our clients need the most guidance.

As for the GMAT, I suggest working to maximize your score given INSEAD's average GMAT is around a 710. While a 700 is not far from this, you may want to aim 20 to 30 points above the average since you are coming from an overrepresented applicant pool.

Feel free to send a note to scott@personalmbacoach.com if you are looking for guidance. We work with a lot of folks in consulting, as well as a lot of Indian applicants, and would be happy to help set you up for success!

Regards,
Personal MBA Coach

HI ,
I am interested in applying to Insead in Sep 2022 intake, and wanted to know if my profile is good enough :

In all honesty, INSEAD with a 690 is probably going to be a stretch. It sounds like you have some nice accomplishments at work and some good grades in college, but INSEAD is one of the top (if not THE top) MBA programs in Europe and so "good" isn't necessarily going to cut it. Plus, you are coming from a fairly competitive demographic and that only puts more pressure on you to stand out.

I am glad to hear you are retaking the GMAT. Ideally if you can get a 730+ that should make you more competitive. Do you have any extracurricular activities or leadership accomplishments beyond what you have listed? Those would be important to tout in your profile and, ultimately, your application.

If I were you, I would still apply to INSEAD but make sure you have plenty of backup schools on your lists too!

Good luck,

Hi Community,

I wanted to get your opinion on my profile for MBA programs. I'm in no rush, targeting top MBA programs non-US.

Target Schools: INSEAD (Jan '23 intake), LBS, HEC, IESE, SDA Bocconi
Wouldn't mind getting an opinion on chances at top US MBA Schools as well such as HBS, GSB, Wharton (haven't seriously considered since I feel my overall GPA is low). Regardless, Europe B-Schools are a priority.

Background: 24, Indian, Male

Education: Majored in Computer Science and Engineering with a Minor in Management from an upcoming university in India (the university is gaining major recognition across India and abroad, with a recent NAAC accreditation)
Merit Scholar (80% Tuition Fee Scholarship)
Overall GPA of 7.4/10, with 8.9/10 in Management Minor courses.
A few point to add:
    1. The university grades on an absolute scale of 100 rather than a relative bell-curve grading
    2. I completed 34 credits for my Management minor as opposed to the 18 required for a minor completion
    3. The trend of my GPA has gone up from first semester all the way to the eighth, with 9.8/10 in final semester
    4. The Management minor was very competitive, with 15 students selected to pursue one out of 290 applicants

Extracurriculars: extremely heavy on ECs (which had a slight effect on my GPA)
    1. Captain of the University Cricket Team; led the team to victory at the university's national-level sports festival
    2. Started the Entrepreneurship-Cell on Campus and Headed the same
      a. Led a team of 25 undergrad and grad students to organize events and campaigns
      b. Organized a national-level b-plan competition in association with Govt. of India
      c. Today, the E-Cell has partnered with one of the Indian Govt.'s programs and established a startup accelerator on campus, which fosters development of 13 startups
    3. Headed the Partnerships Team of the University's Annual Cultural Festival
      a. Managed a team of 15 to procure partnerships and sponsorships
      b. Secured an amount of Rs. 27 lacs in sponsorship ($36,000), which was a 40% YoY growth in amount
    4. Elected as external affairs secretary for university sports for University's Student Council, responsibilities included leading the entire university's sports contingent to national level sports tournaments
    5. Exchange Student with Rotary International this one is from 2013-2014, so not sure how relevant
      a. Chosen amongst 60 applicants for a fully sponsored one-year cultural exchange program
      b. As a high school student, led the 4-person high-school robotics teams to victory at VEX Robotics State Championship, and represented at 2014 VEX Robotics World Championship
    6. Other random ECs
      a. Awarded Best Cadet Award at Rotary International Youth Leadership Awards (2012)
      b. Volunteered with Rotary International before 2015
c.Advisor to the university team which won second place at National Entrepreneurship Challenge conducted by Top 5 college in India

Work Experience: 2 years with ZS, in a strategy consulting capacity with a major hotel chain as a client (although the official title is Business Operations Associate), will have ~3.5 at matriculation
    1. Expecting promotion to Associate Consultant in December
    2. Handed a responsibility of handling client's clients within 3 months of joining as an associate, while the average associate is given such a responsibility after ~a year
    3. Handling on average a combined revenue of $43 mn by independently handling a portfolio of 30 client hotels
    4. Currently managing a team of 5 in a new side-project with the same client unusual for associates

Post MBA Goals: Consulting in Europe

GMAT 1st attempt: 710
GMAT 2nd attempt (tentative): 750-760

Would really appreciate all honest opinions and input regarding my profile.

Hi Yashvibansal653,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Your profile looks good on the surface. Starting with stats, your undergrad GPA is good. Your GMAT score is lower than the average required for INSEAD. It's good you are retaking GMAT, try to aim for 730+ to maximize your chances. On the work front, I can see a good career trajectory. You will need to showcase your achievements in the organization and the leadership roles you have undertaken to put a mark on the adcoms. You will need to bring uniqueness to your profile that will set you apart from the other applicants in the pool. Your profile has some stint of international experience, make sure you present it correctly and give your profile a global outlook.

Overall a good profile, but need to work on GMAT. Also, I would like to know some major aspects of your work experience, ECs, and impact to evaluate your profile better. If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and gauge your fit for the b-school. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

I agree with much of what the previous poster wrote. You have the foundation of a good profile that would make you a candidate for INSEAD and several of these European schools. You should work on:

(1) Picking up another extracurricular activity or doubling down on one of your current ones. Looking at the list, most seem to come from college or earlier. These schools want to see that you are staying involved in your "community" even after you graduate. Such activities could be non-job-related contributions made at work or really anything outside of the workplace.

(2) Yes, it would be helpful to bump up that GMAT. You are coming from a competitive demographic and so the pressure for you to do at least 20 points better is real. You won't be automatically dinged with your score but without those extra points, your application rests more heavily on the other components of your application.

(3) I am less enthusiastic about your post-MBA career goal of consulting in Europe. You're in consulting now, so is that really a game changer? What interesting spin on you going to put on this goal? You have to show a good amount of thought and even creativity if you are going to impress the AdComs at these top schools.

If you'd like to discuss more, our team is waiting by to set you up to talk with one of our MBA consultants about your background and our admissions services:

Good luck!

Hello pkanhe1,

Thank you for sharing. First looking at your GMAT, getting around a 750-760 should position you very well for your target programs. Should you secure a score in this range, you may be able to think about adding some top US schools to your list. After a 770, there is limited benefit in increasing.

A strong GMAT will help outweigh the slightly lower GPA, which can also be explained in the optional essays if need be. Personal MBA Coach regularly works with applicants who have a low GPA and they get in if they ace the GMAT and have impressive experience.

In terms of your strategy consulting role, Personal MBA Coach’s founder used to work in global strategy for a hotel company so we are very familiar with the hotel space! Now it will be about crafting the right story to show learnings from the space and how these learnings will help accomplish your goals.

Currently, your goal of consulting in Europe is rather broad so you will want to consider how you will make your unique mark. Perhaps you intend to develop a specific area of expertise within the consulting industry or focus on a certain sector. You will want to think deeper and share your vision for improving the consulting industry.

As for your extracurriculars, you have a lot of experience here. However, remember that quality over quantity matters and that this experience should gel with your overall story.

Feel free to send a note to scott@personalmbacoach.com if you would like to discuss your application strategy in more detail. From school selection goal development to essay writing, we can guide you every step of the way via our comprehensive packages.

Best,
Personal MBA Coach

Hello Experts,

Can you guys please help me evaluate my profile for INSEAD Sept 2022 Intake

Academics:-

10th (AP State Board): 91%
12th (AP Board of Intermediate Education): 94.4%
Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Engineering (Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur): 7.4/10.0 CGPA
Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (University of Florida): 3.76/4.00 CGPA
GMAT - 730 (96th percentile), Q50 & V39 in the first attempt (Should I give it another shot?)

Work Experience:-

Full-Time:-

1.) 34 months in total at Honda R&D Americas (Ohio, United States of America) as a Vehicle Test Engineer.

Internships:-

1.) 8 months at Tesla, Inc. (California, United States of America) as a Fastener Design and Validation Engineer. (Internship was full time, paid and does not have anything to do with a school curriculum)
2.) 3 months at Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited Research and Development (BHEL R&D Hyderabad, Telangana, India) as a Research Intern.
3.) 3 months at Defence Research Development Organization (DRDO Hyderabad, Telangana, India) as a Summer Intern.

I am a hardcore mechanical engineer with all of my professional experience in Research and Development roles. I have 42 months of international work experience in the United State of America. My work experience revolves around developing some of the world's most fascinating automobiles (Teslas, Hondas, and Acuras). During my time at Honda R&D Americas, I worked on developing vehicle body systems and validated component, system, and vehicle level strength and durability attributes for future Honda and Acura automobiles.
In layman terms, I basically made cars by collaborating with multiple engineering teams.

Awards & Extra-Curriculars:-

1.) Awarded a scholarship of 4500$ from the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering at the University of Florida for my academic achievements.
2.) A Gold Medal and a silver medal in national level college sports festivals organized by Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology, DAIICT, and Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur, IITJ, respectively.
3.) Starting XI player on the college football team for 4 years and also represented IITJ in the 49th and 50th Inter IIT Sports Meet.
4.) Served as the Vice-Captain of the IITJ football team for a period of 1 year. Took complete responsibility for the strategy and operations of the football club during my tenure.
5.) Event lead for various football tournaments, including a national level college sports festival, during my undergraduate days.
6.) Served and lead an 8 member team as captain at the Honda R&D 2019 Futsal Tournament.
7.) I represented my school in inter-city quiz competitions and have decent scores in several school-level national Olympiads.

Let me know my chances for INSEAD in particular and also other ways to improve my profile for having a good chance at the mentioned international schools below.
I am most concerned about outside of work experiences during my full-time job. Barely did anything in the past 3 years besides my 9-5 job (not so proud about it).

POST MBA Goals:- Utilise my R&D engineering experience and get into a Product Management role. Looking at Technical/Hardware PM roles in companies that make hardware products rather than software (IT) products.

Target Schools:-
1.) India - ISB, IIMA-PGPX.
3.) Europe - INSEAD, HEC Paris.
4.) Singapore - NUS, NTU
