I believe it depends on where you stand right now. If you have already taken a test that tests the concepts tested in GMAT or if you have been or are in a profession that involves application of GMAT-relevant skills, then all you would need is a resource that provides you an insight on what type of questions the GMAT tests you on. For that, GMAT OG and the official tests are excellent resources.
However, if you need to build knowledge on concepts tested on the GMAT, then I highly recommend that you take some course or study using a guide.

go with a mock test first then u will get to know where u stand currently
based on which if its far from ur target strengthen ur basics from manhatten prep and then start og and again take a mock so that u can figure out ur level and the time required and for the resources u have a plenty in this forum just go and search out.
