please evaluate.
Hi muditagrawal, first things first: Not having an experience in any social organisation is not a show-stopper. Hence, I would like to encourage you to confidently go ahead with your application.

Overall, it seems like you have a good candidature. What stands out in your profile is the fact that you have been working in your core domain industry and have quite a few accomplishments to show for your work over the past 4 years. GMAT score is not extraordinary but then, completely in the range to make you eligible for an interview call. Acadamics are consistent as well.

Now you need to work on the application to highlight your strengths. Note that your short term goals cannot be far removed from your education and experience so far. More importantly, in the second essay, you must articulate how a business degree at this stage of your career would further your aspirations.

Hi, I'm Karthik! Here are my stats, would really appreciate an evaluation:
Hi karthikeyanchellappa, you have not mentioned the discipline during your undergrad engineering degree. Nevertheless, it does seem like there have been few shifts: from your engineering degree to a consulting profile in the first job, and then again a shift in your current role in the pharma company.

Hence, a major emphasis of your essays, has to be on articulating how these various shifts during your career were not entirely disjointed and they were well thought out moves (within a grand plan that you have for yourself:)). Thankfully, the nature of your work in your current role (such as restructuring of business etc.) logically would lead to Strategy Consulting job (which is your short term goal).

Needless to say, your GMAT score is exemplary and will help you. However there is no reason to be complacent, because the schools that you have listed are extremely competitive. The GMAT score can only support but not substitute a well-crafted and sound application.

Hi Mudit,

Thanks for sharing your profile.

I am an ISB alum, CO14 and have been assisting applicants in their admission journeys to global business schools. Below is my evaluation of your profile :
Academics : Above Average
Work Experience : Average
Extra curricular : Decent
GMAT : Average

Overall you have all the elements of creating a compelling application, but you will need to showcase how your future goals are aligned with your current professional skill sets and how an MBA from ISB will complement what you already have today and help you get to your short and long term goals.
As far as extra curricular and community contribution is concerned, I would recommend you to mold your existing contributions (professional and otherwise) in such a way that they portray a true representation of your personality. These personality traits should also resonate from your recommendation letter filled by your supervisor. Active NGO participation is definitely not a requisite for drafting a compelling application.
Please feel free to get in touch with me at arijit.biswas@crackadmission.com and/or +91-9701215544.

Wish you the very best

Assistant Manager, Coal India Limited (August 2013- present)
Bachelor of Technology, Mining Engineering, IIT BHU.
Job Overview
Human resource management
Has to maneuver approx. 130 unionized workforce having least fear for job loss towards working efficiently to achieve production targets.
Risk assessment
Constantly altering work place dynamics require continuous assessing and decision making in order to maintain an optimum balance between production and safety of men and machinery. Mining being a hazardous industry contributed positively towards my decision making ability by virtue of operational difficulties which require immediate assessment and mitigation.
Liaising for better collaboration
I do also act as a liaison between CIL and a private enterprise (GMMCO), which involves Indian as well as overseas employees, at the unit level.
Operational Planning
Have to plan for resources to ensure uninterrupted production not only for my team but also for the next one to follow.
In addition, I had the opportunity to witness technological advancement in the industry with the shift from Drilling & Blasting to Continuous Miner technology. Apart from gaining technological knowledge, I had the first-hand experience of the managerial teething difficulties that any organization faces during such transitions.
Academic Details:
10th 92.4 % CBSE
12th 80.2% CBSE
Grad. 77.7% (GCPA 7.77)
GMAT 710 (Q50/ V36/AWA 5.5/IR 5)
Achievements
Professional
• Received “Distinguished service award” while working in the capacity of Shift In-charge for the quarter of July-September, 2016.
• Received “Team Player Award” for the financial year of April, 2016 to March, 2017 for efficiently leading the team to meet the targets with due regard to safety.
• I am a certified First Aider approved by St. John Ambulance (India), a first aid and ambulance wing of the Indian Red Cross Society.
Co – curricular
• In 2016, got an international paper published in Elsevier’s Safety Science journal as was working in collaboration with a professor at my alma mater.
• In Xth, was awarded Certificate of Merit for being among top 0.1% of successful candidates in one of the subjects.
Extra- curricular
• As a member of final year team, won the inter year carom tournament of Mining Department.
• As a member of college kho-kho team won first prize in the college sports fest.
• Was awarded certificate of merit, for securing 1st position in model making competition in the annual techno management festival of the mining department at IIT BHU.
• Represented college in cultural fest of IIT Kanpur “Antaragini”, which had a huge participation from various institutes, and won second prize in mime event.

I have been told that no community service or association with an NGO is a big negative. In my case, mining projects are based in remote locations, so don't have the access to any NGO nearby . So, do I really have to do something about it?

Hi muditagrawal,

You have a strong profile that comes across as accomplished and well-differentiated. If you can translate the same to the essays, we think you definitely have a good chance.

Extracurriculars are helpful in showcasing that you are not a uni-dimensional person and we think that you have plenty of examples that show this. You need not worry about an NGO involvement. It is definitely not mandatory and in your case, frankly, not essential. As next steps, focus on your essays, do have a look at our guidelines to the ISB Essays: https://www.apphelp.co.in/ISB-Essays.htm

Feel free to reach out in case of queries.

Hi, I'm Karthik! Here are my stats, would really appreciate an evaluation:

Nationality: Indian
GMAT: 750 (Q50, V42)
Undergrad: Non-IIT, Top 25 engineering school
Undergraduate GPA: 3.6
Current work ex: 48 months - Consulting (19 months), Pharma (29 months)

I worked in a leading multinational pharma consulting firm as an associate for 19 months. International work ex was limited to working with American clients and colleagues - no travel. President of the toastmasters club and launched training programs for new hires. Not much to write about work, I'd left before getting promoted. Received an award for gamifying the toastmasters program
I then moved to one of the largest multinational pharmacos in a commercial excellence role (SFE). Managed multiple projects across functions: sales force rationalization, strategy roadmaps, capability building roadmaps, gamification, restructuring businesses, implementing innovative business models, go to market implementation - many of these have had business impact in $MM or equivalent. Have been awarded 3 times in 2 years for 3 different projects. Youngest member of team, colleagues are MBAs and received a fast track promotion in 2y against firm average of 3y.

Extra Curriculars:
President of Toastmasters club
Watch a lot of movies (>300 last year alone)
Travelling - have traveled to ~10 countries, and to multiple altitude regions of the Himalayas in the last 3 years
One helluva storyteller :)

Target Schools: Kellogg, Booth, Wharton, INSEAD

Short term goal: Top tier consulting firm

Can't wait to hear!

Hi karthikeyanchellappa,

You have a good profile - work-experience in Healthcare is valued across B-schools. A good GMAT score and the awards help too. It would be good to remember that with your target list, you would be competing with the best in the world (and it is often more competitive and difficult for Indians to get through).

What works is that you are already in a role that helps you understand business and strategy well. INSEAD and ISB (assuming you are targeting ISB too, because this is the ISB thread :)) are definitely within reach. For the others, you would still need to go the extra mile on building exceptional essays that show you as a differentiated and accomplished candidate.

Hi,

Thanks so much for your response! And yes, I'm definitely applying to ISB as well.
However, any particular reason why you think INSEAD is also within reach, in contrast to the US B Schools?

Hi All,

I recently gave GMAT after 1 and a half month of prep and scored 700. This was my first attempt, and I relied mostly on OG only (No test series, etc). Now, there are two things I need help with: Overall Profile Evaluation and If I should try for a higher score.

This would be a brief of my profile:
10th: 89 CBSE
12th: 81 CBSE
Graduation: 2014 graduate in IT stream from one of the NITs with 6.97 CPI (Pointers are on the lower side)
Work-ex: 1 year as Business Analyst with one of the Indian E-Com Major.
2 years with one of the Hospitality startup, was part of the team which built an entire state's business from scratch. I was promoted twice, started as a City Head and went on to become Business Development Head for the state. Worked on both the fronts: Business Development and Sales.
Currently ( from last 6 months): Part of expansion team of a startup in Fintech domain, its still in stealth mode and we're setting up the ground work.

EC:- Badminton Player: Represented my school at zonal Level and college at national Level (University Tournaments) as captain
Marathon Runner: Had picked up this hobby recently only, over the years of Job Life, I transformed from physical fit to obese. So, I researched and planned my own fitness plan(was able to shred 1/5th of body fat). Marathons were small milestones of the plan, and I've already successfully done 2 half marathons and a full marathon. Currently I'm mentoring 3 more people on Nutrition and Exercise for weight loss and overall fitness.
Maths Teacher: taught Maths at an NGO for underprivileged kids for 3 months.
Head Coordinator, Sports Committee(College): I was part of the initial team who had set up this committee, and in the final year as a Head Coordinator we organised college's sports fest as well in which 1K+ students participated.

I'd really appreciate any sort of advice/help

Thanks!

Hi RajatSinghR,

Couple of questions: What are your goals and what is your current role?
Business Development profiles are valued at B-schools, because they're in great demand by recruiters. We think you have a good profile and a 700 should be enough to see you through.
As next steps, it will be good to build strong answers to your goals and link them to your accomplishments and your profile. Well-written essays (you can also talk about your personal struggle with obesity) will definitely get you to the finish line.

Feel free to reach out for a discussion.

Hi AppHelp,

Kindly advise a good time to discuss.

Regards,
Rajat

Hi everyone

Please find below my profile:

I've completed my B.E. in Information Technology from Mumbai university in 2011. I started my own company with my friends in my 3rd year. Since then we've grown from a humble team of 3 people to an SME with 20+ people. I act as the CEO of the company and we've served some reputed companies in India and USA. In addition to it, I've also implemented some startups for ISB alumni. In all, I've 6+ years of work experience. Some of my academic scores are as below:

SSC: 87%
HSC: 88%
BE: 61%
GMAT: 650

My goal of getting in ISB: To improve my business management skills and to increase my network

I would like to understand if my profile and current GMAT score would be sufficient to get into ISB or do I require to reattempt GMAT for better scores

Hello Saurabh999

Thanks for sharing your details.

Your professional experience is indeed very interesting. The entrepreneurial venture, leadership experience, and international exposure add depth to your profile and will help you include a number of talking points in your applications.

Having said the above, a 650 is on the lower side for ISB and you must definitely re-take the GMAT, and aim for a score above 700! ☺

An improved GMAT score, coupled with a logical sync between your existing experience and future career goals will make you a competitive applicant at ISB! ☺

All the best!

Hi muditagrawal ,

The good news is that you do have a pretty good professional profile, complete with achievements, leadership experience, and some basic managerial knowledge. A strong portrayal of these factors will help amplify your chances of gaining an ISB admit!

Now, on the flip side, while you have a decent GMAT score, it is not exceptional. Thus, it is now imperative that you concentrate on producing a stellar application, which appropriately represents your strengths, speaks about the qualities, which differentiate you as an individual, and portrays a logical sync among you professional experience and career goals. ☺ If you are able to take care of these points, you will certainly have a strong chance at ISB!

With regard to your question on community service experience, please understand that while NGO experience helps include an additional element to your profile, the absence of it is by no means a deal breaker ☺ Hence, it is now time to focus on what works for you rather than what doesn’t. ☺

Should you feel the need for a detailed discussion, please do not hesitate to reach out to us for a free profile evaluation! ☺

All the best with everything!

Hi,

Please help me evaluate my profile for ISB

Age 34
GMAT 710
IR - 7

10th 71.4%
12th 74.8%
Undergrad 71% from a decent college in Karnataka

GRE -1440/1600
Masters in Computer Science from the University of Illinois Chicago with GPA of 3.64/4.0

Work Experience
Post my masters worked as an Application Engineer for an investment research company for 1 year. As I wanted to work for a startup joined a cloud networking startup( Arista Networks ) in Bay area founded by Co-founder and initial investor in Google. Worked with the same startup in Bay area for 2.5 years. In 2011 I returned to India and was instrumental in setting up, recruiting and training people for Bangalore office. During my employment at Arista I was the lead developer for 71xx series of switches, helping and enabling other colleagues to understand the nuances of the chip and also making sure all the support cases related to 71xx are resolved in a timely manner.

Entrepreneurship
In July 2015, Arista went public which gave me the financial freedom to start my own venture, Funrento - An online toy & book library for kids in the age of 2-8 years. I along with my wife started Funrento, realizing the importance of toys in the development of the child. However, toys in the market are very expensive and little ones do not with these expensive toys for very long. Due to some logistics challenges and difficulty in scaling, we decided to close the online toy library in Jan 2017.

Investment
During the last 2 years, I developed a lot of interest towards public and private investment. I exposed and learned a lot about different kinds of investment vehicles in India such as equity, mutual fund, debt and real estate. Investing in equity exposed me to a lot of financial ratios and parameters which were very helpful when evaluating a public company.

Also, I became an angel investor in 2 early stage startups, advising them on the strategy and helping them raise more funds from family and friends

Travelling
I also have a passion for traveling and have been doing a lot of Domestic as well as International travel over the past 2 years. I have traveled to South Africa, Greece, Australia, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia

Volunteer Work
In 2017 I started working on a website with the aim of helping parents select schools based on reviews and facilities. This is still work in progress

I am also an active volunteer for Art of Living, humanitarian and educational non-governmental organizations, founded by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Ji. I have recently organized a happiness course for 50 participants in our residential complex.

Hi goodiecallapk,

Thanks for sharing your profile.vI am an ISB alum, C014 and have been assisting applicants in their admission journeys since.

Below is my take on your profile :
GMAT : Lower than average
Academics : Average
Work Experience : Good

Your GMAT is on the lower end of the spectrum. So in order to make a compelling application for ISB or any top 30 B schools in US, you should try retaking the GMAT and improve your score by 40-50 points at least. Having said that, with a compelling application where you capture the learnings of your past experiences and tune them with what you are looking to get into post MBA, you stand a chance of getting an interview invite from ISB.

As far as your professional experiences are concerned, please bear in mind to showcase your learnings from the diverse roles you have performed till date – MNC employee, Startup Employee, Startup founder. The admission committee would be interested in understanding your commitment levels for each of the roles and specially the reason as to why did you end your entrepreneurial journey in just about year.

Hi Sabicha,
Thanks for sharing your profile.
I am an ISB alum, C014 and have been assisting applicants in their admission journeys since.
Below is my take on your profile :
GMAT : Average
Academics : Average (Masters from an International University is a plus)
Work Experience : Excellent
Extra curricular : Competitive
The most critical question that you will need to address in your application is why you need a MBA right now and more so why from ISB. You will have to articulate a common theme across the different phases of your professional career and fit in the MBA appropriately in your future aspirations. One way to do this would be something like : worked in a startup - > attained financial independence through stock sale - > started entrepreneurial journey - > failed but learnt a lot - > also identified some gaps in arsenal - > want to fill those gaps through a holistic MBA program - > equipped with management skill sets would follow my entrepreneurial passion again but with the necessary arsenal.
A logical flow of events is a must to draft an impressionable application.

Hi Amogh,
Thanks for sharing your profile.
I am an ISB alum, C014 and have been assisting applicants in their admission journeys since.
Below is my take on your profile:
• GMAT : Below Average
• Academics : Average (Higher CGPA is a bonus)
• Work Experience :
- Quality : Good
- Quantity : Lower than average
• Extra-curricular : Competitive
Your GMAT score and volume of your experience is on the lower side compared to a lot of people you will be competing with. However, you can make this up with a compelling portrayal of your Sales and BD experience. Sales is always a ruthless job and especially when you are at the bottom of the pyramid in an organization. Since you have excelled in this role, you will need to showcase all your personality traits that have helped you come out strong.
Also, make sure that your short term goals are aligned with your existing experiences, and you don’t aim for something where you won’t be leveraging them. This will form the core of your application.
