Hello, Please review my profile for ISB PGP program.

Personal and Academic Details
Background - Male, 24(age), Indian
Education- B.Tech graduate from a Tier-3 college
UG CGPA - 9.08
12th - 96%
10th CGPA - 9.8
GMAT - not yet taken
Experience - 18 months

Job Details
Started my career in a software company. Work was not challenging enough and my technical expertise was in a different technology. Worked there for 9 months. Currently Working in a different company in the role which i like. Working in a project like many other IT professionals out there. Apart from project I mentored 30 employees in enhancing heir technical skills in the first month of joining this company. And also took the initiative for (kind of) creating a environment in one of the area of my technical expertise by which the company can deliver quality outcomes to different clients. Our initiative became big and a lot of experienced professionals are also pulled into this to make it a reality soon.

Extracurricular
During my undergrad participated in telangana startup yatra in which students pitch their start up ideas to Telangana State Innovation Cell (TSIC). Out of number of ideas selected from throughout the state 100 ideas were selected. My idea is one of the finalists of this. Failed to receive funding for different reasons.

I have been a part of a restaurant (not mine). Been part of deciding the menu, ambience and other thing before opening. After opening promoted the restaurant in different platforms. Restaurant is really doing great and is competing with other restaurants which are in the same space and which are really popular from many years. Managed the hotel management graduates working in the restaurant. Been incharge of hospitality. And will be a part of its expansion. I am doing it for myself to learn new things and to come out from my comfort zone.

Also organized few events and workshops during my UG days.

I always wanted to learn new languages. I started with spanish and currently learning the same.

I don't have a great profile or a unique one. What should i do to improve my profile to increase my chances of getting into ISB.

Hi sai1704 , hope you are doing well.

You have good academics and CGPA that show academic inclination even though you may not come from a tier 1 college. A stellar GMAT score (730+) would perfectly sum up your motivation for doing MBA from a tier 1 college such as ISB to further your career progression.
You seem to be a go-getter and a hustler because of the initiatives you took at work and outside of it in trying your hand at entrepreneurship (even if it was only as a participant in innovation cell or supporting someone else's venture). You must draw insights from all these experiences in your essays to showcase leadership capability and growth mindset. You are also young compared to the average ISB student, and therefore, think about how you could demonstrate conscientious planning with regards to your career decisions by connecting your post MBA goals with your work experience.

I would advise you to reconsider your post-MBA goal of consulting as it has been used too often to be interesting or thoughtful. Think about what you would like to do 10-15 years from now, and what are the skills that you need to learn to get yourself closer to your long-term goals. List down a number of alternative career paths in the short term that would help you to learn those skills (consulting being one of those). Talk to ISB students and alumni to understand how candidates get shortlisted for consulting interviews and what are the odds that you would get an invite for the same (ask what factors come into play).

If you wish to discuss your strategy for ISB or seek professional guidance feel free to get in touch.
Best wishes

Hi, sai1704,

Thank you for your post!

First, I would like to say that you have a good overall CGPA at each academic level and have a decent amount of relevant work experience. Coming to your profile, since you haven’t taken your GMAT yet, I would like to highlight that a score of 720-740+ would definitely increase your chances at the school as your profile is decent in terms of WE, GPA!

Regarding your ECAs, I can see that you are willing to take risks and diversify your experience; that’s the essence schools look for in a candidate’s extracurriculars. Moreover, by now, you would have definitely grasped some key aspects of entrepreneurship by helping run a new restaurant. All you need to do is highlight the relevant insights from these experiences in your school essays to help showcase your character as a leader, growth mindset, capability, and the ability to be different from the general queue.

All in all, I would say you have an overall decent profile, try to make your post-MBA goal more collinear with your work experience, for which if you like, you could refer to our article, How to bring collinearity in your post-MBA goals? This would most certainly help provide insights about collinearity in post-MBA goals. At last, I would say, try to connect dots and form a network interlinking your goals, ECA, experience to draft mesmerizing essays. That’s all about your profile; if you want a more detailed analysis of your profile regarding ISBPGP, feel free to book a free session with us at your convenience.

Check out our upcoming events and sign up for the session that interests you.

Cheers!

Hi TargetttGMAT720 , hope you are doing well. I consider ISB, IIMs a better match as your profile seems closer to the average profile at these schools. Improvement on GMAT is a must since you belong to the overrepresented pool (Indian male techie / IT). Focus on highlighting your career progression over the years, leadership skills, and ability to resolve conflicts through multiple examples in the essays. Think through your post MBA goals and be conscientious so that your goals make sense for your career trajectory. Try to bring out the uniqueness in your profile as much as you can. Interact with a lot of alums to drive insights into the essays around why you are the right fit for your target school. Also try to understand the Post MBA opportunities and how you could leverage your experience to easily attain your short term goals after MBA.

If you wish to seek professional guidance on putting forth an impressive application do reach out

Best wishes

Hi NavneetKumar7 , hope you are doing well. You have a stellar GMAT score so congrats on that! You also have a lot of years of experience in the operations and process design domain, and therefore, it becomes critical that you show clarity of thought on your objective behind doing the PGP/MBA at this point in your career. I encourage you to also consider the IIMs and XLRI as good alternatives to ISB. You must have a strong narrative around your year-on-year career progression, leadership skills, and business impact generated by you throughout your career. You seem to have a strong technical aptitude but in your application, you must also show your business acumen by quantifying the impact of your work. ECs are somewhat dated, therefore you must think deeper about any prolonged association in social impact domain, sports, hobbies etc.
Cannot emphasize enough that you must catch up with alums, potential recruiters or the school officials to know about the post MBA opportunities for an applicant like you who has a lot of experience in industrial process design.

If you wish to seek professional guidance on your application strategy do reach out.

Best wishes

Hi, TargetttGMAT720,

Thank you for your post!

First, I would like to say that you have a good overall CGPA at each academic level and have a decent amount of relevant work experience. Since you are planning to retake your GMAT, I would suggest that you aim for a score of 725-740+ that would definitely increase your chances at the school as your profile is decent in terms of work experience, GPA!

Regarding your ECAs, I would like you to add some brief information regarding your experience in Volunteering work, if possible, to use them as examples of leadership, the impact created and showcase yourself as someone willing to diversify your experience rather than just marking them as part of your company’s CSR; all that add up to the very essence schools look for in a candidate’s extracurriculars. Moreover, add more detail about your work role, successful ventures, critical projects, and any professional accolades earned. Finally, highlight the relevant insights from your work experiences in your school essays to help characterize yourself as someone with a growth mindset, a capable leader, and the ability to be different from the general queue.

Hello NavneetKumar7,

Hope this finds you well.

You have a stellar profile and GMAT score. However, your experience is definitely way higher than the average at ISB. Hence, a lot will depend on how well we portray your achievements till date as well as your need for a managerial education at this point in your career. Needless to say, you must consider other Indian schools such as IIM A, IIM B, IIM C as they are generally a bit more open to those with slightly higher years of experience.

Should you feel the need for a detailed discussion, please feel free to reach out to us.

All the best!

Hello, Please review my profile for ISB PGP program.

Personal and Academic Details

Post MBA goals
Consulting

I don't have a great profile or a unique one. What should i do to improve my profile to increase my chances of getting into ISB.

Hello sai1704,

Thanks for writing in.

For now, just focus on getting a good decent GMAT score - upwards of 720 (the higher the better) and on performing at work - on current projects and on garnering new ones (that will help you add talking points to your profile).

Good luck!

ISB Profile evaluation

Hey everyone, can you please help me evaluate my profile and chances for ISB PGP 2023 ! Also, please do help me with a target for GMAT score and what all could I do to improve my overall profile !

10th - CGPA 7/10
12th - 70%

Graduation - BBA 2016-19, CGPA 2.26/4

Work experience - Working in a Real Estate Developing Company since 2 years 10 months as a Marketing Executive

Hello Agrim07,

The details shared by you are not enough for us to evaluate your profile and we, therefore, request you to share the same. Having said that, you must focus on targeting a score upwards of 720 to have a competitive chance (especially since you have a low GPA and a higher GMAT score will compensate for the same to some extent).

Hello Snehsagar220994,

ISB values differentiated work experience and your tenure with a shipping company is bound to help in that regard. Of course, a lot depends on your skills and achievements at work as well as how they tie up with your future goals; needless to say, the same will need to be well-represented through your essays.

You must target a score upwards of 710 on the GMAT; the higher the better.

All the best!

I don’t know why I’m getting notifications from this thread every time someone posts. I have unfollowed it, yet I get notifications. No idea somehow.

To answer your question -

Everyone will say to aim 720+
But the score depends on a lot of factors like diversity of your profile and gender as well.

If you feel your experience is rare and doesn’t belong to over represented category like Indian General Engineer IT. Then even 690/700 will work.

Great profile .. If your target is executive program for IIMs, you can easily get in with this profile and a 700+ gmat score

If your target is good colleges in US with scholarship program your target should be 740+
without scholarship 720+ would be great
