My Queries are:

1) Is ISB even a possibility considering my age and GPA.
2) What are some alternatives in India and Internationally if not ISB apart from IIM PGPX

@Raoshan87, thanks for sharing your details.

1) Is ISB even a possibility considering my age and GPA.
You have an interesting profile with some tangible impact in your work experiences, along with ECs. Targeting an above average GMAT score can alleviate any concerns on your GPA. While you haven't mentioned your post MBA goals, having clarity on your target sector, function, geography (ideally also companies) is important to both target the right schools and come up with compelling essays for why MBA, why our school, etc. This would also make your application strong.

2) What are some alternatives in India and Internationally if not ISB apart from IIM PGPX[/quote]
Would depend on your post MBA goals professionally, and personally, i.e. if you want to come back to India and when etc. and also on your GMAT score.

Feel free to schedule a chat to discuss further, through the link below.

12th- 80.2%
graduation- 8.52/10 CGPA- Btech Mechanical ( VIT vellore)
Work ex of about as of now 37 months
25 months - Asst manager escorts limited- Electric Vehicle design and development ( most vehicle design management work)

Can you tell me how much I should get in GMAT in order to get interview call from ISB.
PS I am scoring around 640 as of now

Shezikiro

Targeting a score above the school's GMAT average (which is 710 for ISB) is a good idea. Analyze your mock tests in depth, to identify areas of improvement (sections, sub-sections, question-types). Using an Error-Log to track errors and fix them can be helpful at this stage. Feel free to reach out if you would like access to our free GMAT Study plan along with an Error-Log template, which has been prepared by 730+ scorers.

Having said that, all top schools including ISB weigh your profile holistically i.e. essays, CV, work experience etc. so spending good quality time on the application (either in parallel to or post your GMAT) is highly recommended.

Hi Baibhavp24
loved your profile!

Most of the skills a future leader must possess depend heavily on emotional intelligence. Without interacting with people from different cultures, hierarchies, and motivations, it is difficult to understand the realities on the ground, even if you know all the management concepts. This type of grassroots experience will set you apart as an MBA candidate.

Since many PGP/MBA candidates will have advisory roles in their future jobs, your prior experience in a social enterprise will allow you to see the human side of situations, which will be an advantage. The problems that the majority of the world's population suffers from are not first world problems. Governments and nonprofit organizations are not capable of solving problems of this magnitude on their own. The experience of a professional who has worked in a highly systematized and incentive-based environment would enhance the effectiveness of philanthropic organizations or the social impact sector. Your previous engagements and initiatives have given you the ability to navigate a complex cross-cultural environment, a criterion considered particularly important for excellence at a global business school like ISB. You are also well suited for Oxbridge, IESE and HEC Paris, should you wish to apply there.

To clarify your goals in your applications, talk about your motivation for working in impact consulting. You may have interesting insights from working on implementing projects that target specific populations, such as the bottom rung of the pyramid. Demonstrate compassionate leadership through stories and an iron will to mobilize such sectors post-MBA by leveraging your prior experience and increased business acumen post-MBA. Be clear about your goals, show that you have networked with people in your target industry and MBA graduates, and research your goals well. Goals that align with your current experience will seem compelling. This will require further discussion and research, but I think you can leverage your experience to work in a variety of positions in the impact consulting, startups, climate tech etc.

My advice- Target a good GMAT and get good guidance for shaping your applications at top schools.

Personalized advice tailored to your specific situation is just a phone call or message away. Do not hesitate to reach out to us if you need help navigating your unique circumstances in the PGP admissions process.

Hi Iti24

Hope this finds you well

Your academic arc is solid. Your GMAT, however, is average.

Work Experience
As someone with 3 years of work experience you should now focus on differentiating yourself within this pool of young applicants.

Showcase Depth and Breadth
What sets you apart from other applicants is the depth of your expertise and the breadth of your experience working on a variety of supply chain projects in a short period of time. Supply chain is very analytical, and if you are a supply chain strategy and technology consultant at GEP, you should demonstrate that you have had to work hard to understand the principles that drive optimization across supply chain and logistics (this is not easy to learn in a short period of time). I have worked with several successful candidates with supply chain backgrounds having as low as 2 years of experience, and I have found that showing ownership of projects and being knowledgeable is good for these profiles, especially for less experienced candidates. In the ISB interview, you can expect to be asked about your thought process using case questions. I did not really understand your current experience in the "Executive Search and Leadership Advisory Company".

Goals
You have not mentioned your goals. You should add a personal element to your goal strategy and show how your supply chain experience and shorter recent stint would make you an ideal candidate for your post-MBA/PGP goals. FYI, I have an extensive supply chain background in design, product, and operations (nearly 10 years), so feel free to contact me if you would like to discuss your profile.

Schools
LBS looks like a reach school at first glance, given your profile (GMAT and experience). But I think your profile has much more to offer than you mentioned here. Consider IESE if you are focused on consulting jobs. Consider HEC Paris if you want to pursue industry leadership positions in the EU.

Wishing you the best of luck, and please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any further questions or if you would like to discuss your goals in detail.

Hi Shezikiro hope you are doing great

Thoughts on GMAT
Something that I often tell applicants on this forum is to look at the GMAT score individually for quant and verbal sections. If you are from an overrepresented pool (e.g. Indian IT /technical male applicants), it is good to have a balanced GMAT score. Admissions committees evaluate your performance along with that of your peers on a normalized curve. For example, a Q49 score (~75th percentile) is considered borderline elite for strong Indian applicants to top business schools. So, if your quant score is close to this value or you have crossed this threshold, the admissions committee will be confident that you can handle the academically demanding curricula.
Your verbal score is more likely to reflect your ability to participate in discussions in a truly diverse group.

Similarly, for native English speakers (such as applicants from the US and the UK), adcoms would be concerned if the applicant’s verbal score is well below the threshold for their population. As an Indian applicant, if you have a balanced GMAT score, meaning you performed well on the Quant section, you can be less concerned about your overall GMAT score.

Overall for ISB I would suggest above 710 as long as your score is balanced.

Work Experience
I too come from the automotive sector in the product-process design and testing (pre-MBA) and hope I can guide you.

Your leadership capabilities and "career progression," will be of utmost interest to the schools. As you are relatively less experienced than the average PGP candidate, the school will want to know in depth about your professional and personal growth over the last 3 years. I believe you have solid experience in design to production rollout across areas such as developing product concepts, creating design specifications, testing and analyzing prototypes, troubleshooting problems, and collaborating with teams at all levels for successful product launches.

You did not mention your goals. It's important to be authentic about what you expect from an MBA/PGP. Note that the admissions committee will have a long memory of previous profiles that may have mentioned generic goals related to product or consulting, for example. To stand out, take time to think about where you see yourself in 5-10 years and develop a short- and medium-term plan that makes sense for you. Reflect on the skills you've acquired from your past experiences and identify areas where you'd like to improve. If you're aiming to switch to a different industry or function after your stint in EV auto design, think about the new skills that would be needed for that transition. If you're interested in consulting, you can leverage your passion for your current role/industry and express a desire to expand operations strategy for clients at a top management consulting company or in a strategy role at an industry-focused company (such as the EV industry).

Standout candidates are more likely to provide a Plan A and a Plan B, and back them with relevant insights gained from networking with alumni, potential recruiters, and industry experts. This would show that you've done your research and are proactive in planning for your future career success.

Wishing you the best of luck, and please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any further questions or if you would like to discuss your goals in more detail.

Hi Baibhavp24,

I've reviewed your academic transcripts and extracurricular activities, and I'm very impressed with your accomplishments.

Your academic record is strong, and your undergraduate degree from the University of East Anglia with 40% scholarship is a great foundation for your MBA studies. Your GMAT score goal is also ambitious, but I'm confident that you can achieve it with hard work and dedication.

I'm also very impressed with your extracurricular activities. Your passion for social impact is evident in your work with the Shanta Memorial Rehabilitation Center, Raahat and your participation in building fluency in German language and various marathons. These experiences demonstrate your commitment to making a difference in the world, and they will make you a valuable asset to any MBA program.

I know that you're excited about the possibility of attending ISB. It's a great school with a strong reputation for social impact. I'm confident that you would be a great fit for the program.

I wish you all the best with your GMAT preparation. I know you can achieve your goals!

Hi Iti24

Your academic record is strong, and your undergraduate degree from LSR is a great foundation for your MBA studies. LSR provides a good opportunity to learn from outside the classroom/curriculum through the student’s clubs. I hope you have actively participated in clubs and perhaps have held office of responsibility too.

I am also assuming you have clarity about the short-term professional career goal and how your current and past work experience and added knowledge from the PGP will help you achieve your goals.

With this clarity you should definitely apply to ISB preferably in the R1.

Hi Shezikiro,

Your academic record is strong, and your three years of work experience in the design management of electrical vehicles and aircraft are impressive. However, we're concerned that your GMAT score of 640 may not be competitive enough for admission to ISB.

The average GMAT score for the ISB PGP program is 700+. This means that you would need to improve your score by at least 60 to 80 points in order to be considered a competitive applicant.

We understand that retaking the GMAT can be a daunting task, but we believe that it's the best way to increase your chances of admission to ISB. We would be happy to provide you with some resources and guidance to help you prepare for the exam.

We wish you all the best for your GMAT preparation!

Hello siljin,

Apologies for the delayed response but we hope this finds you in time still.

Your GMAT score is a bit under the ISB class average; hence, considering you belong to an over-represented applicant group, we would recommend that you give one more shot at the GMAT to see if you are able to boost your score. An improved score will definitely amplify your chances.

Having said the above, ISB, like any other business school, evaluates profiles in a holistic fashion. Hence, a lot depends on your overall profile (including accolades at work, leadership potential, professional and academic achievements). Needless to say, how well your essays demonstrate your abilities will go a long way in determining your chances.

In short, you must give one more shot at the GMAT; simultaneously, work towards identifying your strong points.

All the best!

Hello Shezikiro,

Thanks for writing in.

Good to see your strong undergrad background and the fact that you have voluntarily taken up a managerial profile. These will help you add some strong talking points to your essays.

While no score will guarantee a call, you should aim for at least a 710 on the GMAT; the higher the better! :-) Needless to say, your essays will have a large impact on your chances as well.

Should you wish to discuss your profile in greater detail, please feel free to get in touch with us for a detailed profile evaluation. We will be happy to help! :-)

All the best!

Hi Everyone,
Is it possible to get into ISB with low academics and no extracurricular activities during academics time.
I have 86 % in class 10 and 60.8 % in class 12 and a 7.9 CGPA in graduation(Computer science engineering).
After that, I have been in the IT industry since 2019 working in an Administrator role where I have done multiple certifications.
I have also got delivery excellence award and other awards for my project work.
So is it possible to get into ISB and if yes how much i should target in GMAT

dibyasatpathy10

Your GPA is alright to be honest. You should now focus on attaining a 700+ score and crafting a solid narrative for your career progression and goals.

If you would like you can read these strategies to counter bad academics
Read- Navigating a low GPA

For your applications, I advise you to construct a strong narrative that showcases your career progression resulting from hard work and perseverance. ~5 years in a professional setting is a substantial duration, so present a variety of examples highlighting leadership, empathy, diversity initiatives, teamwork, and other relevant aspects of your profile.

Utilize anecdotes from your professional life to demonstrate your leadership skills. Showcase how you motivated teams, expedited projects, achieved desired outcomes, resolved conflicts with persuasive abilities, influenced management decisions through keen observations and insights, and generated value for your team and organization as a whole. Highlight your bias for action and conscientious decision-making capabilities.

Your ECs are missing. But I suggest that you think deeper and analyze whether you have missed considering any mundane/ unobvious/ subtle initiatives you may have taken through the years ( travel, learning a new language, certain diversity initiatives at work, for example, raising your voice against gender discrimination, voicing strong opinions for diversity in the workforce, providing financial or moral support to someone in need, teaching the underprivileged kids, organizing diversity talks or off-site activities for better collaboration among teams, and so on). In my experience, I have seen that applicant struggle to recall in the early stages of application how they contributed toward the betterment of their community. It could take a little introspection to unravel it all.

Hello Gmatlearnerpromax,

Thanks for writing in.

First things first, your Merchant Navy background puts you in a differentiated pool of applicants and this will prove to be a strong advantage. Additionally, the promotions, extra-curricular activities, and pro-bono consulting will help you add strong talking points to your overall profile, and, in turn, amplify your chances.

Frankly, there isn't much you can do (profile-wise) to strengthen your case, except focus on getting a solid GMAT score. A score in excess of 700 will give you a strong chance of garnering an interview call; hence, your efforts should be centered around getting a good score, post which, you should be focused on putting forth a set of well-written essays that aptly demonstrate your potential for ISB and showcase a strong sync with between your background and career goals.

All the best!

Dear ASHUTOSH2402,

Please find below an evaluation of your profile.

Academics:
GMAT: Your Target Score of 720 and above will be above average.
Undergrad & Postgrad: Below Average; neither are your grades high, nor do the institutes you have graduated from stand in Tier 1 or Tier 2.

Work Experience: Average; While 8 years is above the median as far as ISB’s incoming cohort’s experience is concerned, the nature of your work in a non-engineering field might give you some diversity angle if you play your cards well. While your experience seems to cut across the entire breadth of HR, it will be good if you can focus on a few key areas ex. Change management / Employee Satisfaction/Retention and demonstrate how you were able to create an equitable workplace where everyone felt valued and were driven by common vision and mission of the firm. This will be of immense value to your classmates at ISB who intend to join small scale organizations, startups, or even build teams in pursuit of their entrepreneurial ambitions.

Extracurriculars: Good ; Volunteering for a cause and learning new skills are always considered bright spots in a profile.

To summarize, I believe that with a score in excess of 710 and an application where you are clearly able to self reflect and bring out how you can add value to the peer learning of the ISB cohort while at the same time build on your strengths and address gaps in your profile (aligned with your career goals), will strengthen your case for a seat at ISB.

I am an ISB alum,CO15, and have been guiding applicants in their admission journeys. Feel free to reach out if you seek professional guidance.
Additionally, feel free to go through the YT Video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUmgE-vBYaI where I discuss tips and tricks to ace this year’s differentiated essays with one of my classmates from ISB, Shruti Sharma.

Cheers and all the very best!

Hello @ASHUTOSH240,

Thanks for your query.

Your work in the construction industry as well as your HR background will add the "diversity angle" to your case; this is indeed your biggest plus point. Having said that, your 8 years of experience is slightly above the sweet spot for ISB and your educational credentials are average. The extra-curricular involvements appear to be in good shape.

Your target score looks good as it will help you balance your strengths and weaknesses. However, you appear to be a bit unclear about your career goals; hence, this is where you really need to put in good thought. Once the goals are in place, you will need to work on a narrative that showcases a strong sync between all that you have achieved thus far and what you intend to do post the MBA.

It totally makes sense to apply to ISB and all the IIM's in case you are looking at opportunities in India. In case you are looking for global exposure, you must look at applying to 1-year European programs.

Should you feel the need to discuss your profile in greater detail, please feel free to get in touch with us for a profile evaluation session. We will be happy to help.

Hello dibyasatpathy10,

Hope this finds you well.

Getting in will be an uphill task, though, not impossible provided you get a solid GMAT score (in excess of 730) as well as put forth a set of compelling essays.
A lot will also depend on how you tie your existing experience up with your post-MBA goals; since you have not provided clarity with regard to your goals, we are unable to comment on the same.

Should you feel the need for a detailed profile evaluation, please feel free to get in touch with us. You may drop us a personal message and we will be happy to help.

All the best!
