Hey there, first year MBA student at UNC Kenan-Flagler and happy to help especially since I also went though healthcare consulting recruitment at UNC this fall. I was also admitted to Owen so I feel like I can help you out a lot. Congrats on 2 terrific admits! First, I want to let you know that the healthcare consulting opportunities are tremendous at UNC. It's true that Nashville is a good city for healthcare, but UNC is a stronger healthcare school than Owen. We have an amazing healthcare ecosystem, a brand new initiative for the business of healthcare center and get all the top pharma, provider, and healthcare consulting firms. IN fact, each year, UNC hosts one of the biggest healthcare conferences in the country for top MBA programs. I would argue that UNC is actually stronger all around than Owen in Healthcare and in general. Next, you mentioned the consulting firms. I am sure that Owen also gets big 4 as does UNC, but I do not believe Owen is strong with MBB. Although we place less people in Bain and BCG we actually place a lot of students at McKinsey. We are also listed as target schools on MBB websites as you can check yourself. Keep in mind, it doesn't matter where you go as long as they come on campus. It will come down to your stats, casing skills and interview skills to land the most competitive gig in b-school but UNC will get you facetime no doubt. Lastly, although vandy grew in rankings this year, I think UNC is a stronger brand than owen. Thar voltility in ranking can sometimes paint a raw picture and can be lost quite easily too. Next regarding brand...that actually led me to withdraw my app from owen. I did not feel the owen had the brand reach and comprehensiveness that UNC had. I wouldn't worry about the brand of the undergrad that much. Sure, people will know the vanderbilt name, but UNC also has clout as a top public ivy school but that doesn't matter as much. Lastly, you should know the UNC knows its McColl building is getting outdated and there are plans in place to construct a new building soon. That won't impact you but at least admin knows this and is working on it. All in all, the bottom line is that UNC will offer everything Vanderbilt does and then some. Slightly bigger class, slightly stronger healthcare, slightly better consulting on-campus face time, slightly more breadth of companies (especially boutique HC consulting), and 1 tier ahead in the MBA brand game. I definitely had the inclination that UNC was stronger and my experience first year confirmed that was a the right line of thinking. Let me know if you have any other questions!
Hey
woody93 thanks so much for the above info. I really appreciate it. Your comments on an earlier post of mine about whether or not I should apply to Carolina helped to convince me to do so and the above is just reenforcing a lot of my existing thoughts!
