(A) Concise and clear. No idiomatic or grammatical errors.
(B) "uses" is out of context, since the first phrase introduced "produced" in context.
(C) Repeated use of "nuclear power" is unwarrented. Unnecessarily wordy.
(D) Quite like (C). Wordy. Not concise, though grammatically correct.
(E) Incorrect statement. "Energy from nuclear power is just over 33%" isn't a complete statement.

I'd go with (A).

A is eliminated because the pronoun "it" refers to what - energy or nuclear power?

B: is eliminated because of "compared to Germany"? What is being compared to Germany?

E: is eliminated because again what does it refer?

Both C and D seem like equally good answers because they present a constrast: "whereas"......

One of the 2 choices has some kind of modifer issue. I'm going with "C". Although dont know what is wrong with D. The phrase "just over 33 percent of the energy" position is different between C and D.

Anyone care to explain why either C or D is wrong? I cant seem to spot the difference except that D follows the following structure:

percent....energy....country....nuclear power, <same structure as before the comma>

Any solid explanations?

This was quite confusing..

(A) is clearly wrong. "it" has no refferent.

(C) and (D): both seem grammatically correct. I will pick (D). (less words)(literally counted the words :-D )

Pick C because nuclear power should be compared to nuclear power only
not any country or any other thing like percent

I think D is more parallel, because the subject of the clause is the same.

i vote for C) because...

A) is out cause "it" is a unclear referent
D) is out cause it sounds like the 33% nuclear power comes from germany and is part of the energy in france

I would go with 'D'
The emphasis is on the energy produced but 'C' makes it look like the emphasis is on nuclear power.

"D" for me

structure in D is more parallal than in C

over 75 % of X in AA derives from Y whereas just over 33% of X comes from Y in BB.

whereas C,

over 75 % of X in AA derives from Y whereas Y accounts for just over 33% of X in BB.

Saurya,
Why dont you post the OA???About time dont you think??

Could the SC gods help us discern why one would be AC C over D or vice-versa.

Choice D for paralellism. You start with percentages in the opening phrase, so the non-underlined portion should start with percentages. That way, your comparisoin would be correct.

I dont think you explanation [You start with percentages in the opening phrase, so the non-underlined protion should start with percentages] really holds water.

The structure of a phrase DOESNT have to be identical for COMPARISON to work. As long as you are comparing "Apples" to "Apples" you are okay. Both C and D compare apples to apples.

Could some explain why the D is the OA and what is wrong with C besides "D" sounds better? Both C and D exhibit parallelism.

There are only 2 reasons why D would be better:
1- D is uses less words than C does
2- D has same structure: X derives from Y / X comes from Y
Other than this, I do not see how D is better. C, in terms of syntax and grammar seems fine. Sometimes the sources of these questions are not always reliable. Just be sure you focus on the primary concepts and do not get bogged down by ambiguous questions. What is the source of this question by the way? I'm about to do an ad hominem :)
